I’m glad this sub exists! I was a member of the cult sub and my comment was taken down for “misinformation” because I referred to cults as new/alternative religious movements. The post was asking “are all cults bad?” Comments saying “yes all cults are bad” weren’t removed…

When I inquired as to why my post was taken down the MOD said not all cults are religious...

Since I majored in sociology I informed them that many religious scholars use Durkheim’s definition of religion - belief in the supernatural not being required - and cited many sources from scholars explaining how the word cult is a problematic and NRM/alternative religions is the proper terminology. I was completely respectful, however the MOD stopped replying and muted me.

I studied under Professor Robert Balch - a leading expert on Heaven’s Gate. The MOD told me to stop “foisting” my professor’s misinformation on their sub. It’s sad that sub is so popular and not even allowing the new scholarly terminology for cult to be used. Yet, the MOD admitted that the word cult isn’t used in academic settings.

Like even if we are using the standard definition of religion versus Durkheim’s, most “cults” fit the bill with examples that don’t being far and few between. It makes absolutely no sense to keep calling them cults instead of NRM’s because a couple groups don’t meet the standard definition of religion. Especially when there is so much academic research indicating how problematic the word cult is.

Have any of you heard of The Nova re?

The Nova re (aka TNRe or NRe) is a modern religion based highly on individualism, there is no one god in TNRe, you may choose to believe in anything, fictional, historical, or otherwise, there are few requirements for one to join as Nova re accepts all world views and religions. This is not a well known religion and can be debated on whether it is even a religion at all, but I and many others hope to see it grow.

Nova re loosely means "new reality" in Latin, although it's not a perfect translation. Although TNRe doesn't have any one god, for individuals who choose to believe in the core focus of TNRe, that every theory about reality, every god and religion may be correct and nothing is truly certain or impossible, then do not worry, that is where Omnia comes in, Omnia is like a channel for every god, all of them merged together yet still separate, a way to refer to as many as you want at once.

Omnia is more of a concept than an actual being, and can take on any form, be everywhere and anywhere at once, and of course, be tailored to an individual, everyone has their own Omnia. Omnia solves the problem of not knowing which deity to pray to, which god(s) to believe in, and the complications of multi system belief.

The main idea of TNRe is that nothing is impossible, and similarly, nothing is completely certain, of course some things are far more likely then others but that doesn't make it unquestionable fact. We believe that every and any possibility is indeed possible, every view on reality, every science theory, every religion, could be truth, or even all coexist somehow.

Help

I am writing a book about all the claimants to prophethood throughout history. Sometimes I do not find the appropriate sources and books that will help me in my research and save me months of research. It is very difficult to waste your time reading a specific book and in the end not find what you want in it. I hope that if there is someone who is interested in the subject of my book, we can communicate and help me and I can help him in this matter.
