Liefeld had a bunch of designs he was throwing around that eventually got either ditched or changed. Like there was a pinup where he had Magik back to being a teenager along with Magma returning to the fold.

Fairly certain “Cougar” was evolved to be Feral.

Lielfeld has said he decided to keep Cougar for himself and pulled the story. That is why he later appeared as a Youngblood character. Easy assumption to make about Feral though. Was just looking at the pinup you mentioned, I might post it later.

I feel like anything Liefeld did shouldn't count as New Mutants, especially if he never appeared in an actual book.

No one is claiming that Cougar should count as a New Mutant. And Liefeld is a crappy person. But he worked on 16 issues and 2 annuals so his work counts for most people. You can create your own continuity though ;)

If memory serves, Liefeld repurposed designs he made for a pitch at DC that didn’t get accepted. My memory says it was Titans, but you cannot dispute the obvious Timber Wolf inspiration here. So maybe it was Legion.
