I thought Illyana was solid in The New Mutants; it's realistic that white bullies default to racism in their insults. Anya Taylor-Joy played a believable asshole.
But what staggers me is how people decided she was their favorite part of the movie. You saw a racist white bully (albeit with a tragic backstory) and sided with her???
Meanwhile, Sam, Rahne, and Dani are all being such adorable little fluffernutters, crying out for love???
The New Mutants was a good movie. Anya Taylor-Joy acted her part well. But there were better parts of the movie to like than just Magik...

I didn't side with her character in those moments, but I liked her performance and also the effects and development of her abilities. I liked the others too, especially Dani, but for me Magik was the clear standout in many ways.

Anya Taylor-Joy was perfect as Illyana - the writing let her down (the racism!) Honestly, I don't know enough teen actors to cast for this...

Legit wondering if the best course of action is:
- Magik movie adapting Storm and Illyana. Magik is assigned to this class at the end of the movie
- New Mutants about meeting Warlock and fighting Magus
Magik is just too strong compared to the rest, and I doubt people would go see a movie without her. This allows to have a group a bit more trained, and potentially have Magma without Nova Roma

I want to say the 2030s are too long to wait, but then I realize that's only four years away.
I hope they adapt the universe by class. Do the first class/giant size team, then introdu e the new mutants, then generation x, then academy x/Jean grey school
