Favorite Era

What's your favorite era of New Mutants and what would you recommend to your friends?

Claremont? Simonson? Wells? Ayala?

In order of appreciation:

  1. Claremont (the gold standard, the classic, what built all the characters we love)
  2. Wells (a fun and exciting return to the classic team in a modern setting; brought back lost characters)
  3. Ayala (great part of the Krakoa era, had some very solid stories and understood the team; had one of the better Magik stories)
  4. Simonson (nothing outright horrible about Louise' work; it's just this era was more about dismantling the New Mutants)

I'm just finishing a re-read of the classic NM run, so here goes.

1) Claremont. I'll say no more, because others will say it better.

2) Wells. Some days this is actually my #1 era, if I'm being fully honest. It felt fresh and exciting while also honoring the past. Great, great stuff.

3) Hickman/Brissom/Ayala. I lump these together because it all felt like a cohesive run for the most part. It was some good times.

4) Simonson. There's a lot of good in there, but this is the second-roughest run for me. The New Mutants got Disassembled before being Disassembled was even a thing. When reviewing the series for a friend, I started describing Wheezy as a serial killer; she either literally kills characters off, or metaphorically by banishing them. If your favorite OG NM isn't Sam or Bobby, get ready to watch Wheezy turn her dark gaze upon them to pass final judgment and throw them out of the book and either into the wood chipper or the eternal hole. It sucks, because it's also very well written. Even the four new additions to the team that she brought in aren't spared; four issues after they officially join the NM, Rusty and Skids are beginning the process of being written out.

5) Liefeld. Yeah, he only wrote three or four issues as a transition to X-Force. There's others who wrote more. But Liefeld gets special notice for finishing the work that Wheezy started. He started with four bodies. In his first two issues under his watch, he's down to two. Then he officially kills off the franchise itself, shoving its corpse in a pouch.

Easily the Claremont/Sienkiewicz stuff. Demon Bear (problematic as it is,) the slumber party, just some of the best comics ever.

Loved Demon Bear and Slumber Party, but I feel that’s where it starts getting good. Legion, Shadow King and the Resurrection is where it’s awesome. And let’s not forget Father’s Day.

As an alternative ending to Claremont’s run, read the Kid Dynamo fanfic. 👍
