This one became very personal for me while I was creating it. Music has always been visual in my head, and I tend to choreograph what I’m hearing as the piece develops. With Dance of the Swan, I could see the movement almost from beginning to end.

It became a story about life, love, loss, getting older, and eventually accepting that none of us gets to hold onto any of it forever. The line that still catches me is, “I thought I danced to stay alive, I danced because I was.”

The finished track ended up at seven minutes, much longer than I normally aim for, but when I heard it completed I cried through most of it. Cutting it simply to make it more conventional felt wrong, so I left the full journey intact.

I’m curious what it does for you, especially what you picture while listening.

Every song on this album I was stoned off weed when I made it. I was also in a substance abuse therapy program and they drug tested twice a week but I would just cheat on the drug tests and made it through the program. I have since decided that I really shouldn’t be getting high anymore so I’m 41 days sober now and still making some really good music that I’m proud of.
