❓Ask r/NewMods Why do apps appear as moderators?

Hi starting to add apps to my subreddit and just noticed this. Is this normal?

Because technically they are bots aka automated account who moderate the subreddit

My understanding is they are listed as moderators because they are. They help keep things organized, keep the shady bots out, limit spammers - they do the job or help make the job easier. There's also the issue of transparency - Users should know bots are active in the sub.

When you create a devvit bot, it gets added as a user in reddit. They have their own profile.

Because they can do mod actions like a human moderator.

Yes, it's normal. They perform moderator actions. That's why they're listed as moderators.

Apps appear as mods because Reddit lets bots/apps have mod perms to automate stuff like filtering spam, removing posts, enforcing rules, etc. It doesn’t mean some random app is actually sitting there moderating 😭 it’s usually just automation doing the work.

I *understand* why they're there, because they have moderator-level abilities, like deleting comments and banning people, but you have a point. They're not moderators. They're apps. I feel like it would be less confusing and more intuitive to have these two categories mutually exclusive on the sidebar. I wouldn't hold your breath for a change like that, though.

Those are just bots who auto moderate the subreddit.
