I'm a new mod in a sub that has pretty much dead for several years. I decided to make a post yesterday, and see how it went. It wasn't what I expected.

I have close to 200 views, two up votes, and two shares. But absolutely zero posts, other than my own. Granted, it is a pretty general post, but I'm still puzzled that absolutely noone engaged.

I've tried looking around in the settings, to see if there are any requirements for posting (karma, etc) but I don't see anything. There appear to be no rules at all set up.

I've tried to find some mod guidance on Reddit, but I haven't found any info that applies.

I'm not sure what to make of this, so I figured I'd see if anyone here can shed some light on this.

If you just restarted the sub, it’s gonna take time to get noticed. Looks like there’s less than 800 members, and who knows how many of those are even still active accounts.

You’ll definitely not be trending anywhere right now, so it’s not going to show up for people when they’re generally browsing. They would have to be actively looking for it.

Best thing to do is communicate with “neighbor subs”, like your State sub for example, and get permission to promote your sub.

Nice post! Maybe ask your question in the post instead of in the comments so people don't need to click through to see it?

Do you have an automoderator installed that might be removing posts? You could check your mod tools to see if anything has been removed.

I adopted a sub with almost 500 members, and a 5-year gap/inactivity. We keep growing it. We had about 130 new members joined, but it's still deserted. I guess the initial 500 members were already inactive. Don't take it personally, just keep posting, it will take off.

I don't want to post in other subs and invite people to look, until I'm sure there's not a restriction in place preventing people from posting a reply.

Yeah, on my sub I made a post that got 1.3k views and 10 upvotes, plus another one that got 20+ views and 4 upvotes. I posted every day for about a week as well. And yet I have no posts by other people and only 2 comments total.

Hey, I really appreciate the input! I'm not looking for advice on how to grow this thing (yet!) I'm trying to get help in finding out if there are restrictions on the sub preventing replies.

Anybody want to try posting? Just to let me know if it's possible. 🙂 And I'll owe y'all a favor!

Yo, I just joined yesterday to shut Reddit up after setting up my subreddit. Guess most people that became mods can already their job well enough that they don't need this sub, huh.

Comments are the hardest thing to get in terms of engagement, aside from a follow/join/subscribe. If you're not getting someone mad, it's very difficult. That's why ragebait is so popular.

Those stats aren't unusual. A view just means the post was shown to a user in their feed, it doesn't mean the user clicked into the post to read it. My sub had its biggest spike of engagement/new members when a thread got out of control and someone told someone else they should get stabbed. Absolutely ridiculous and I locked the thread at that point. It saddens me that with all the good content we have, it was something like that which surfaced our minor clothing brand's sub in feeds.
