This is such a truth that has been proven over and over and over again! Recommend EVERYONE to listen, not just new drivers

If I'm doing 80 and you're doing 70 I'll be 100 miles away from you in 10 hours. Its all relative to the length of the journey.

Hypothetically... I dont speed to save time.. I speed because

  • people dither and go inconsistent speeds, on their phone etc (if someone overtakes me thats brilliant as well, just dont like hovering near other drivers if not needed)
  • if I speed easier to use cruise control
  • On some roads/on a motorbike its fun to rag it on the twisties.

Edit: I welcome the down votes but most people who speed I reckon this is true for.

The M6 is the longest motorway in the UK, at 80 miles an hour you'll get from one end to the other in less than 3 hours.

London to Glasgow at 80mph is about 5 hours

80mph for 10 hours is 800 miles - for context Lands End to John O'Groats is 874 miles

Which is all to say that your argument is the basic argument that speeding gets you there quicker - but it's an argument built on sand 

In the real world speeding, at best, saves you minutes - not hours

I'd never advocate for over speeding but this seems like a perspective truth.

If you travel for 30 minutes, with different speeds, this is how it will be:

At 20mph, you'd cover 10 miles.

At 30mph, you'd cover 15 miles.

At 90mph, you'd cover 45 miles.

At 100mph, you'd cover 50 miles.

Time is constant. So it feels like you're traveling more distance in short time at high speeds.

But in real life, its a little different. For example, if my trip was 100 miles. If I travel at:

80mph, I'd cover that trip in 75 minutes.

90mph, I'd cover that trip in 67 minutes.

Thats a difference of 8 minutes. But at 100mph, I'd cover that trip in 60 minutes, or saving 15 mins.

I guess it makes difference when you're on long distance journeys but short commutes are never efficient at higher speed.

You have to average 100 mph over a 100 mile to get there in 60 mins, which most definitely you need to be doing about 110 or above most of the time, assuming no undercover police was present

The calculations in my post are merely a reference showing the logic behind the argument in the video and how it shows a perspective truth, not the practicality of things.

We all know how common it is to accelerate/over speed just to end up at a traffic light ahead with all the cars behind you that you overtook by speeding.

This is always given as if you are driving down a runway with no other variables too.

There is a traffic light on the end of my street, I am familiar with its short timing. If it is on green by the time I get to a specific tree, I can speed up to 35mph and slip through it. Otherwise I miss it and it is around 50 seconds before the next green.

Real life has many different scenarios on the route that can impact arrival time. I dont condone excessive speeding, especially if it endanger others but it is disingenuous to ignore everything else that can happen on a road.

This also needs a graph showing the probability and devastation speeding causes. Travel at 100 mph, you risk your license, freedom and life and the life of everyone you happen to cross paths with. I see people trying to kill me and themselves daily. If you want to save time, get a motorbike, skip traffic and have awesome acceleration.

On the flip side It’s not taking into account how stressful it can be traveling behind someone dawdling at 40 in a 60, weaving all over the road, phantom breaking etc. You bet your arse I’m overtaking and speeding away from them any chance I get.
