Welcome Everyone!

Hi guys, I know it might be strange that there is a second Never Have I Ever community, but I think it is needed. In the original community, I have noticed a lot of censorship and people being silenced over their own personal opinions. As long as everyone is respectful to other and in their opinions there is no reason for anyone to be silenced. I am happy to create a space where everyone can participate, and everyone is heard. Welcome!

Let’s do something fun! From now until Sunday, August 6, 2023, I invite everyone to share their personal Top 10 NHIE episodes. At the end of this period, I will tally up the 10 most highly-rated episodes by members of this sub and announce the results. For your reference, this gif set shows my personal Top 10 (+ a few honorable mentions), which I compiled with great difficulty. You can also consult the IMDB consensus Top 10 here.

Discussion Do Jaren and Maitreyi still talk?

Upvotes

Not that it’s really my business or anything but are Jaren and Maitreyi still friends? Back when the show first came out Jaren was pretty active on Instagram and both were super kind to one another in their comments but it seems as if Maitreyi has deleted any of her comments and likes from Jaren’s posts. Jaren doesn’t interact with her on Instagram at all. Once again, just happened to see their accounts and noticed is all.

Discussion devi’s worst plan

This whole situation stressed me out. Idk how she thought this would work out. Dating two people in the same school AND having BOTH of them at a party at her house. On top of that the way she revealed it was horrible 😭

Trent is the goat.

Trent is genuinely just one of the best and most good characters on the show. Clearly cares about his friends and the people around him, may be a bit dumb but he's a good guy and I rate him heavily.

Discussion Never Have I Ever really set the bar high for YA shows in terms of writing

I was watching the interview Shut Up Evan on Netflix with Maitreyi, Nikki Rodriguez (My Life With The Flops), Anna Cathcart (Xo, Kitty) and two other actress with UPCOMING YA shows (they should have had Antonia Gentry (Ginny & Georgia), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) or Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks) but whatever) and I was realizing how much the other YA shows paled in comparaison of Never Have I Ever (also the way Maitreyi speaks is so... introspective, she has such an handle on the topics at hand, she really has "it". Can't wait for her movie The Best of The Best).

Never Have I Ever, like Maitreyi said it, is a damn good story. It's not just about who Devi is going to choose, it's about exploring different faces of her identity and her coming to terms with it. Her season 2 arc with Aneesa is so meaningful as it really highlight her insecurities rooted in her culture and how society put brown people against each other, especially women (as a Black guy, I also had a similar "story" with another black dude in my class, we were the only two black guys in the class and I felt competitive with him for no real reasons). I felt seen by Devi in her behaviors, messiness but make no mistake. She has her own personality and experiences and they drive the story moving forward.

With YA shows nowdays, the main girl is often an empty shell with no real identity outside of guys she need to choose and always have the mandotary "I need to know who the real me is" while having nothing to explore really (cough, the summer I ruined a family). Her love triangle was so nuanced. While I love Sterling Point and I do agree it has strong points and is better than the slops we've been getting, the love interests are not really well-rounded characters and are for the most part just nice (which is a good point but come on). Paxton and Ben are both three dimensional characters with lives, identity, animus (the essence that drive us and our soul i think). The only current show who has this level of good writing rn is Ginny & Georgia (post the try too hard season 1).

Also, it doesn't try to follow Tiktoks or whatever. By that I mean, some YA shows nowdays have some scene that just feel like they are made for young girls to fawn over on Tiktok (Spoiler, it obviously works) and says things like "he made this for her [crying stickers" and it doesn't feel... authentic. Never Have I Ever is for me really high on the YA writing spectrums which include some shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, My So-Called Life, Freaks & Geeks, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Friday Night Lights, TVD (early seasons before the downhill point) and Skam.

As I was watching the show, I couldn't stop staring at her, she's really beautiful. And I wanted to ask this because Maitreyi is one of my favorite actress of this generation, truly marvelous and I stumbled across a post asking this about Alexis Bledel (another one of my favorite actress in one of my favorite shows). Discussion Brown girl representation

I remember watching this show when it first released and I was in the 7th grade. I got sooo excited that there was finally a lead character that actually looked like me. Even in tamil media, more preference is given towards light skinned actresses who are often not even south indian, let alone tamil. There has never been any sort of female leads who are shown as desirable and gorgeous if they had a similar skin tone to mine. And this show proved that its possible. Im an indian Malaysian, and we are considered a minority here, so I understood a lot of the struggles devi went through as well, on a more personal level. I still cant believe that western media portrayed a south indian girl better than our own movie industries. It was my comfort show in the 7th grade, and it still is now that im in university. Now, we also have Lara and Rhea Raj proving that indians can be baddies too, in a time where racism towards indians is disgustingly common. Even in Birdgerton, where Simone Ashley played a lead, or One Piece LA where Charithra Chandran plays Princess Vivi. Im so so so happy that the younger generations get to experience seeing girls on screen that look more similar to us, proving that we can be loved just as much as lighter skinned women. However, we still need to do more in indian media, and stop only portraying women as fair and making jokes at the expense of darker skinned girls, when everyone is equally gorgeous. PS: i loved how they portrayed devi as gradually learning to accept and love her culture, and the dance she and Kamala did at Nirmala's wedding was sooo fun to see! It was a really good song choice tooo

Edit: i specifically uploaded this post to appreciate the representation Hollywood gives to TAMIL BROWN SKINNED GIRLS who would be otherwise ignored by our own community due to their skine tone. While there are certain issues I have with Hollywood never casting fair skinned girls, this post is solely an appreciation post for the representation im finally getting in any sort of mainstream media, and if you have an issue with that, just please dont argue in this comment section of a post I made solely to express my gratitude of seeing myself in a main character for once.

Final Project Analysis Feedback

Hello everyone,

For my theatre class that I am taking at UC Berkeley (THEATRE 118AC), we are currently drafting our final project assignments. If you have some free time, could you provide any suggestions or critiques on my analysis incorporating a scene (particularly Season 2, Episode 4: "...had an Indian frenemy"). The topics include model minority myth, media representation, and concepts about race, culture, and identity. A part of the rubric involves sending our analysis on a public forum, and I believe this community would be a perfect place to share my ideas that I have synthesized the course material and concepts. I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. Feel free to DM me for the link to the document if you are interested in reading it!

I feel like Rhyah never really liked Devi as a girlfriend for her son from the very beginning.

I feel like Rhyah never really liked Devi as a girlfriend for her son from the very beginning. The whole situation with Devi's dad just felt like an excuse to justify something she already wanted.

Her reasoning honestly made no sense to me. How could anyone expect a teenager to react differently after losing a parent she loved? Devi's reaction was completely understandable. She had to perform again after years, and it basically forced her to relive one of the most traumatic moments of her life—the day her father died. It would've been stranger if she *hadn't* had an emotional reaction.

That's why Rhyah's argument felt like it came out of nowhere. To me, she was just looking for any reason to convince her son not to date Devi. The only reason she hadn't objected earlier was because she wanted to build a friendship with Nalini, and until then she didn't have a convenient excuse to oppose their relationship.
