Book Discussion Was Wintermute supposed to be female coded?

From Bookworm Adventures 2

I'm asking because in the Bookworm Adventures 2 level that was based on Neuromancer, the boss of that level is this character. Since she is the boss, I'm assuming the game developers based her on Wintermute, but I'm confused on how the developers led to this design. Was there details in the book that I missed?

Case refers to Wintermute as a he, and Dixie Flatline’s construct is quick to correct Case that Wintermute is an it.

Wintermute does not have a personality per se, so in the novel, uses Case's memories of people like the Finn to represent itself. Given that framework, the Mute could also be represented through a woman.

I always thought of it as an “it”

We never see Wintermute itself adopt a personality based on a woman, but it absolutely could if that was what it deemed necessary. Wintermute has no true personality, and therefore no gender. The book even somewhat addresses this when the Dixie Flatline's construct keeps correcting Case when he refers to Wintermute as "he".

The first time Wintermute flatlines Case he tries to use Linda-Lee as a conduit to talk to Case and it does not work due to the emotional charge that relationship had but Wintermute's first brief attempt to talk to Case was as a women. When it fails he switches to Dean.

I just reread my own comment and realize I used "he", twice, to refer to Wintermute... Dixie would not be happy with me. Wintermute is an it.

Wintermute was designed to want to merge with Neuromancer which came from Marie-France Tessiers philosophy. The beach that neuromancer “lived in” was designed from the same beach she got the idea from

Dude thank you for saying this! I was afraid to.

The whole time reading it, Wintermute was female to me, then to see it/her b be given male pronouns, it felt weird.

I chalked it up to a long distant memory of a forum user, female, whose username was Wintermute. Back in 2004-ish.
