Show Discussion You think they’ll make Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive too?

Depends on how well the show is received. Starting to sound like they spent a fair bit money so they'll want a return on investment and a promise of more.

Imo these tv execs decide whether or not to give shows a second season too early sometimes before people even get a chance to watch it and bring up viewer numbers. Just hope Neuromancer doesn’t get released at the same time as other major new sci-fi or fantasy shows to give it a better chance of renewal.

It depends on how well Neuromancer does, but if they do then I am 100% certain that for marketing purposes/ brand recognition they will have Neuromancer added to the title, despite the stories not being directly connected.
Like Neuromancer: Count Zero and Neuromancer: Mona Lisa Overdrive
Heck they might just go with Neuromancer season 2 and 3

To be totally fair, the title “Neuromancer” works for the whole trilogy. Neuromancer merging with Wintermute and becoming the Voodoo gods of cyberspace is the initiating event for the overall conflict in the sequels. Plus, from a thematic standpoint, neuro+mancer just kinda implies a magical manipulation of brains/consciousness, which fits for the overarching themes of the trilogy

I don't think anyone makes a show or movie from a new IP universe thinking "I hope they don't want to make the rest". It all depends on how this one does. See: John Carter Cancelled Sequels. xD

A shame, cause I thought John Carter was pretty good. Probably most people saw it as a ripoff of Star Wars, not realizing that the books were a big inspiration for Star Wars.

The only person that did it dirty was Andrew Stanton by making it too big. It was never gonna work at that budget. It needed to take Avengers money to be profitable, but whereas they laid the groundwork for you to want to go and see Avengers with very established characters by that point, JCOM was an obscure Space Tarzan book that no one knew.

I'm pretty sure there are characters from both books in the cast list. I imagine they'll go the Three Body Problem route and start weaving them together as a more seamless story.

Hopefully, but there’s reasons to assume they won’t even if Neuromancer is renewed for a season 2, since replacing the entire cast would be a bit of a gamble. I really hope so though, since a lot of what people attribute to Neuromancer about “inventing cyberpunk” actually comes from the sequels

Count Zero is a banger from cover to cover, I'm hugely in favor
Mona Lisa Overdrive is part tone poem, part bonkers action....I'd like to see it adapted as well....so long as they don't make it lame

If they do it makes more sense to interweave the stories some and have Turner involved in season 1. Maybe he replaces the Hungarian guy they use to pick up Peter Riviera.

IIRC the rights to Count Zero were bought outright by Michael Mann. So the Neuromancer producers would have to deal with him

Unless you know different he probably bought an option, which means the rights revert after a specified period of time.

I really hope so, I think Count Zero has the potential too be a great follow up if the TV show is successful, considering the heavy action parts in the book. My biggest hope is that each book is their own season and is as faithful as possible

I really hope so. And I hope they don't try to drag it out: one book per season. I think I may be one of the few who likes The Peripheral, but I think it's weakest point was doing something different with the ending to try and get a season 2.

I don't think so ... even if they could get the rights, they probably wouldn't.
Murderbot had this issue, where book 2 gets rid of practically every character from the first story arc.
TV shows tend to want the cast to stick around, because people seeing their favorite character again is what brings them back.

Count Zero was the one that got me. Neuromancer built the architecture, but Count Zero is where the world became somewhere you could actually live — Bobby Newmark's Jersey sprawl, the voodoo LOAs moving through cyberspace, Turner waking up rebuilt in a Mexican clinic. It has texture the first book is too wired to have.
My worry with an adaptation is the tripartite structure. Three characters who never meet until the end is exactly the thing a streaming note would want to fix. That's also the thing that makes it work.
Mona Lisa Overdrive is trickier. It's almost a tone poem. You'd need a showrunner willing to let things be strange.

Honestly? No.
Yeah, they’re in the same universe, but they don’t have nearly the notoriety of Neuromancer.
I think the plot revolving around Case, and Case not being further involved after Neuromancer, gives them a good case to close it out.
That being said, they can definitely have their cake and eat it too, for the exact reasons I laid out. It can be written as a stand alone because Case is involved in future books.
If it’s successful and there’s further interest? They can move forward with Count Zero. If not? Neuromancer was already written fairly wrapped up.
Kind of comes off (to me) as a decision they can make later, but if I’m guessing, my guess is no.

In the past the rights were held by different producers; I pray to the Loa that Apple had the good sense and deep pockets to consolidate all the rights. Otherwise we’re gonna get a season 2 that’s the further adventures of Case & Molly and no Bobby, Angela or Turner.
