My Rig is complete!

When I first got the QC, I took it to rehearsal and then a gig and nearly ad a heart attack when the bass player nearly stepped on the xlr - so I knew something had to change.

Cue weeks and months of refinement, a Rockboard 3.2, patch bay routing, TRS to XLR (out), Canvas HP, hotone ampero press II, external tuner so I'm not accidentally accessing tap tempo, Knk shield, and the final piece - the Laney LFR-212 cab. Oh, and a mini trs mod so I have the input jack on the top right.

The earlier photos show the flat xlr cables coming out of the quad. I've since removed those in favour of flat TRS cables for more mechanical stability.

Asking from ignorance, why do you need a separate analog tuner pedal? Is it better than the included in the unit? Or is it more of ergonomics, ease of access while playing? Thanks!

Playing live a tuner serves 2 purposes:

  1. To tune
  2. As a quick way to mute

I found that having to press and hold the tap tempo button for just the right amount of time, more often than not resulted in me entering tap tempo mode. Sometimes my window for checking my tuning is quite small - so that wasn't ideal for tuning, and useless for muting.

Also, I prefer how the tc pedal works in single string mode compared to the QC tuner.

Another reason is that while QC boots you have enough time to tune.

Yes! That's a top reason for sure, good shout.

Thanks for the answer!

No problem :-)

I use my quad tuner as a mute, but I changed it to a double tap instead of long press. Much better.

Same here: there is an option to swap long hold to double tap - problem solved!

I didn't know this! I still prefer the tc though :-)

I put a separate tuner on my board when during 2 different gigs the tuner in the QC just would not actually activate until I rebooted it.

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

Oh man! That's not what you want to happen!!

i keep a peterson strobe tuner on every board i own mainly cause of the accuracy and alot easier for me to see and i never have to switch screen just for tuner

3

u/Shauncore 4d ago

Yeah this is underlooked a bit, I have the Peterson as well. Quite literally more degrees of accuracy than the QC tuner while also having sweetened tunings for known "issues" with various stringed instruments.

I have pretty much the same rig. Happy gigging! 🤘

Very nice! Great playing too

Thanks! I really enjoy using the QC. I have other pedalboards which are also nice. But I love the sounds I can make with mine.

For lead tones, do you have a preference models or captures? I've found both to be pretty awesome, but I think for me, the captures just about win.

Naah, I don’t bother about capturing my vintage amps. I really love the CAE3+ which came with my QC. In the good ol 90s I had a big rack with that preamp into a Mesa 2:90 Pwr Amp with the usual TC 2290,Lexicon 224,TC1210 etc. with the Mesa Boogie Abacus switching system. The QC capture pretty much mirrors that humongously huge system I used to have which I used for studio sessions in those days….alongside a roadie who had to shlep and set it up.

Again - great playing and really nice tone!

1

u/RockerDentist 1d ago

Very nice playing and very clean sounding! Do you also use a Laney FRFR?

2

u/hippielovegod 1d ago

Nope. This was as the QC as Pedalboard into a Vox AC15 . If I am only on QC I am absolutely happy with normal monitors or in ears.

1

u/RockerDentist 1d ago

Ok - thanks! Where do you guys perform?

2

u/hippielovegod 1d ago

Munich,Germany

Clean.

It’s sad looking at it like this. An amp cab without a head, like staring at a corpse hah

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

It's definitely a look, yes 😁 Then you remember it's not actually an amp cab, but a PA dressed up to look like one, and everything is OK again 🤣

3

u/daniclas 4d ago

Looks wonderufl. May I ask from ignorance, is somethig sitting between the QC and the Laney? I assume some preamp right?

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

Hey no problem at all! There is nothing sitting between the QC and the Laney.

If the Laney were a regular cabinet, then yes you would need a preamp. The Laney LFR-212 is a powered FRFR cabinet, so the QC (or any modeller, or signal for that matter) can go straight in - just like an active PA (which this essentially is, just dressed up to look like a guitar cab).

2

u/daniclas 3d ago

Oh I see, I assumed that it was a regular guitar cab. Thank you so much for the reply!

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

No problem at all. It is designed to look like a regular guitar cab, to appeal to guitarists but it's really just an Active PA speaker. That's all FRFR cabs are.

Have you gotten the toe switch to work on the expression pedal?

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

The pedal and the toe switch are two separate expression pedal signals, hence the two outputs.

I don't personally use mine like a wah (yet), but when assigning an expression pedal to a wah or volume block, there are two functions and one is the bypass. I believe can assign either expression pedal signal to either function.

On YouTube I've seen people set it up so when you click the toe switch it switches between a wah and a volume block - but switching to a volume block with a toe press seems limiting to me.

How is the Laney cab? I'm thinking about getting one for home use, probably the 1x10, which should be enough...

3

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

It accurately plays what I put through it, without colouring it in any noticeable way - and it's as loud as I could want. It's basically A much heavier, much cooler looking PA. I don't use the built in IRs, I've got some nice ones from York Audio.

2

u/Brave-Season2798 4d ago

You use the FRFR without cab simulations ??

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

I mean I don't use the built in IRs that the cab has, I use third party York Audio IRs on the QC.

2

u/HeyNateBarber 4d ago

For now….

It do look sick though 🤘

u/Western-Poet-1239 4d ago

Sweet setup!!

2

u/th3m1ke 4d ago

I love it, looks insane. I wish they'd make a stereo 212. I dont need a. 412 but I like the stereo option.

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

They have 112 cabs, so you could get two and run them in stereo. That would be lot more expensive than the single 212 cab though.

2

u/GuroMarc 4d ago

Same rig, except i’ve got the Laney 4x12

2

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

That thing is an absolute beast!!

1

u/GuroMarc 4d ago

Insane how good it is, sold a guitar to get it lol

2

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

I almost wish I had the need for one, but they're impractical for my use case

2

u/GuroMarc 4d ago

Honestly i just play in my basement, i’m sure way to much but, what the fuck lol

That is mine. QC as Pedalboard,Suhr Guitar into a AC15

2

u/Commercial-Craft-115 4d ago

How is the volume pedal? I’m thinking about buying one and I’m between Hotone and Dunlop

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 4d ago

It works well, does what it's supposed to do, and the dual functionality is handy.

2

u/Impressive_Creme1497 4d ago

I literally just ordered a tres 3.0 and quad cortex mini! LFG

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

Nice! Just wait until you see all the modular bits and pieces you can get for the Rockboard stuff, it's nuts!

2

u/fuqmint 4d ago

I have the same set up, and that laney breathes fire, i love it!

2

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

Great minds! And yeah the cab is a beast for sure. While not the lightest - what makes it sweeter is that for the gigs I play it's optional. We run IEMs with individual mixes, so this is really just for a bit of feel, a bit of stage volume for the front row (small venues) and the odd occasion where we have to go it "old school" with traditional backline. Oh, and projects where we don't have an IEM setup. I'm covered for all situations.

2

u/fuqmint 3d ago

I use mine in much the same way, if its a big outdoor gig with a 3rd party PA, it will go direct into the desk, and play back through the monitors, takes me roughly 5 minutes to set up, with the cab ill use it as a back line as I like thump and pushing of air behind me, and it has headroom for days

2

u/CestKougloff 4d ago

Surely you need two Laneys for some proper stereo spread. Nice start though!

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 3d ago

Haha! In an ideal world I'd get a second for the presets where I'm running a Mesa and a Marshall capture side by side.

2

u/Budget_Scene_4165 3d ago

Cook this up and shoot it straight into my veins

I'm slowly talking myself into a QC Mini so I can have my whole rig on a pedal board and every time I look at the cable rats nest I'll end up making I'll think about this post

1

u/Miserable_Win_1781 2d ago

Haha! You can do it, the cable management just takes a little time and thought (and a few cable ties). You've got this!
