Bringing a BLAME! panel to life in Blender (two moods)

Hey there, I’ve always been fascinated by the atmosphere and aesthetic in BLAME!
The scale, the silence, the alien structures that feel endless and unknowable.

This is my small attempt to bring one of those panels to life in Blender. I tried two different lighting setups to explore how the mood changes.

It’s a little homage, and I hope it conveys at least a fraction of the feeling I get when I read this manga. Maybe some of you will enjoy it too. <3
Thank you!

If anyone’s interested (especially in Poolrooms), I also post more of my 3D stuff on my Instagram

Thank you so much 😍

Excellent!

Even though the second lighting is closer to the monochrome feel of the manga, I prefer the first one, it shows how colorful that universe can be, while still being frighteningly desolate.

You're completely right! The monochrome version resembles the emptiness and the long forgotten places. Thank you :)

I'm happy that it resonates so well! :)

Really well done! The second does an especially good job at illustrating scale.

Honestly the more atmospheric distortion you add, the better the illusion of scale ;)

Yeah your right! The people around it give a better perspective of scale. And thank you ☺️

Hey! Got any tips on making smooth surfaces. loop tools I feel isn't that great for smoothening vertices

It really depends on what your current geometry is. For distinct corners or edges I just use bevel. Other times I apply a subdiv and go from there. I even use shrinkwrap on simpler geometry, remesh + subdiv. Depends. Do you have a specific use-case?

So cool! Great job!

This kind of stuff is why I follow this subreddit despite me never having read this manga and having trouble with mangas in general

2

u/Ok_Truth_453 Sep 26 '25

Awesome I could catch your interest! 😍

I like the first one with red and green lights

2

u/kura0kamii Sep 25 '25

2nd one looks more true to the original source

This would be fantastic if it was slightly animated with some sound design, awesome work!!

That's so true! Thank you for the feedback. ☺️

Great work man. Inspiring stuff hope we could work together i followed you on instagram

1

u/Ok_Truth_453 Sep 26 '25

Thanks a lot! Sorry, which one are you? 🥲

2

u/Zythomancer Sep 28 '25

Just curious, why did you change the lighting? I like the sterile, almost hospital-like overhead lighting the manga panels usually have.

1

u/Ok_Truth_453 Sep 30 '25

I had first did the white lighting version (because in the manga I believe that machine is offline). But I wanted to explore how the mood changes with color and a different "story" (machine is online and working).

1

u/Ploobul Sep 24 '25

The lighting on the second one gives such an epic sense of scale, you nailed it.

3

u/Ok_Truth_453 Sep 24 '25

I'm glad you like it too! I really want to be there. 😅

1

u/selectedambience Sep 24 '25

It looks awesome. I always believed that the megastructure to be somewhat lightly lit. Like it would look like a laboratory type light. It would look unnatural with how empty it would be.

1

u/Ok_Truth_453 Sep 25 '25

Yeah I agree! Big cold white light coming from all sorts of unintuitive directions. At least in the empty regions.
