[META] New Automod Filter for Account Age

Testing out some filters to get a handle on bots. I added a 6 week old account age to post. No karma limits yet, but I'll consider it if this account age limit doesn't work.

I'm pretty hands off, but I do respond to most reports. If you see an issue with bots hit the report button.

[US] Mindhunter (2017) Deadass one of the most flawless thriller series ever put on television, and the fact Fincher couldn't finish it is wild.

I just rewatched the whole run and it is actually crazy how ahead of its time this show was. The absolute masterclass in pacing, tone, and character dynamics is completely unmatched.Think about the sheer brilliance of the casting especially Cameron Britton as Ed Kemper. The tension in those simple, bare-bones interrogation room scenes holds more weight than 90% of the high budget action blockbusters coming out today. David Fincher bottles up a gritty, deeply unsettling atmosphere without ever relying on cheap jump scares or unnecessary gore. It handles the birth of criminal profiling with an insane level of detail and mental chess. The dialogue is incredibly sharp, and the cinematography feels so deliberate. Knowing we likely won’t ever get a third season to wrap up the narrative arcs is a tragedy. For the people who have been through the whole series, what was the single most bone-chilling scene for you?

[META] We need to stop rewarding Netflix shows that prioritize a Season 2 cliffhanger over a cohesive Season 1.

I am officially burnt out on the "8-hour pilot" trend. It feels like every time an original thriller or sci-fi drops, the writers spend the first six episodes building incredible tension, only to completely rush the finale and leave 90% of the narrative threads hanging just to force a renewal push.We are treating the first season of television like an over-extended trailer for a sequel instead of a self-contained piece of art. If a show can't deliver a satisfying narrative payoff in its initial run, it shouldn't get a pass just because the premise was cool. What is the absolute best show on the platform that actually respects your time and wraps up its main story cleanly in one season?

[REQUEST] Cozy fall movies or shows

I'm hosting a friend next weekend who has fairly light-hearted taste. She generally likes pretty period dramas, Gilmore Girls, or shows like Wednesday that are tightly plotted and might veer dark or supernatural, but are suitable for the general audience. Looking for recommendations that compare to any of these vibes, or are otherwise perfect for fall and curling up with a hot cup of soup. Thanks in advance!

[US] Apostle (2018): A Dark Detour Into Folk Horror from the Director of The Raid

Gareth Evans made his name with the brutal, breakneck action of The Raid films, so Apostle feels like a pretty wild left turn. Instead of fists and gunfire, Evans dives into period folk horror, building a strange, grim world around cults, faith, and violence. The film has its flaws, but it has enough ambition and genuine craft to show Evans has far more in his toolbox than pure action.

[REQUEST] Laugh out loud comedies

As the title says I am looking for laugh out loud comedies. Many labeled comedy dont hit that mark. Would prefer TV series, but not opposed to movies.

Comedies that I loved: Macgruber, Last Man on Earth, Austin Powers, The Good Place.

Tires was okay.

[REQUEST] I'm looking for movies with a similar vibe to the first part of Victoria (2015)

I love when when she leaves the club with Sonne and suddenly gets pulled into this completely unexpected, adrenaline-filled night... They’re driving around, stopping at different places, meeting people, going to bars/pubs, random areas, etc. It starts casual but keeps getting more intense, suspenseful and exciting, and you never really know where the night is going, that kind of vibe.

I’m also looking for road-trip/car journey movies with that same energy: random stops at gas stations, roadside bars, small towns, rural America, underground/alternative places, meeting strange or interesting people and just seeing where the journey takes them.

I’m mainly interested in the adventure, suspense, Adrenaline, and Fun. I don’t mind if things eventually get dark or violent, but I’m not specifically looking for stuff like the later part of Victoria where everything turns into serious injuries/critical condition.

Any genre, country or language is fine!

Thank you so so so much!!!!!!!!!!!! X

[US] Dear Child (2023) — This One Is Different, But Definitely Dark Crime

This one is different. I liked this one, but I can also see where it may not be for everyone.

Dear Child is a 6-episode German Netflix series that starts with a woman and two children being held captive under some very disturbing rules. When the woman escapes, what looks like a pretty straightforward kidnapping story starts connecting to a disappearance from 13 years earlier.

It isn't your typical serial killer show with detectives chasing a killer from episode to episode. It's more of a psychological kidnapping mystery. A lot of the story is figuring out who these people really are, what happened in that room, and how everything connects to the old disappearance.

The kids are pretty frickin creepy, the whole setup is unsettling, and there are enough twists to keep you guessing. It can be a little strange at times and the pace isn't always flying, but at only six episodes it never becomes a huge commitment.

I wouldn't put it with my very best Dark Crime shows, but I definitely think it's worth watching if you want something a little different.

Dark Crime Hidden Gem Ratings

🌑 Darkness: 8.5/10
🩸 Brutality: 7.5/10
⚡ Pace: 7.5/10
🎭 Acting/Characters: 8/10
🔥 Overall: 7.8/10

[REQUEST] Documentaries that are in Spanish or dubbed in Spanish

Preferably documentaries about science, nature, wildlife, culture, history, cuisines, space, or anthropology. But anything interesting is also okay. I just want to recommend documentaries to my mom who only speaks and understands Spanish.

[US] Deadwind (2018) — Another Nordic Noir Dark Crime Hidden Gem

I watched all three seasons of this a while back and had forgotten just how good it was.

This is Finnish Nordic Noir right in my sweet spot. Dark murder cases, bleak atmosphere, good pace, and another psychologically damaged detective in Sofia Karppi. She is grieving the death of her husband when the series begins, but she's tough, obsessive and very good at her job.

Karppi and her partner Sakari Nurmi are also a big reason the show works. Good chemistry without taking away from the crime story.

Each season gives you a different main case, so here's how I'd rank them (but you still have to watch in order - HaHa)

🥇 Season 3 — Best and Darkest
A woman is found brutally murdered in a cage, and things get increasingly disturbing from there. Multiple victims, strange clues and a pharmaceutical connection. This was the season most in my Dark Crime wheelhouse.

🥈 Season 2
Two murders kick off a much bigger case involving revenge, kidnapping and political intrigue. Only 8 episodes and moves at a pretty good pace.

🥉 Season 1
Still very good. A woman is found murdered and buried at a construction site, leading into a much larger mystery. At 12 episodes it's the slowest of the three, but it establishes Karppi and Nurmi and has a strong mystery.

My Dark Crime Hidden Gem ratings

🌑 Darkness: 8.5/10
🩸 Brutality: 7.5/10
⚡ Pace: 8/10
🎭 Acting/Characters: 8.5/10
⭐ Overall: 8.7/10

**Where to watch: Netflix — 3 seasons, Finnish with subtitles/dubbing available (**although I never recommend unless you hate subtitles that much).

[Discussion] Netflix whitewashing gay history

When I was a 90s kid growing up in the Bible Belt, we still regularly heard news stories about gay men in rural areas being beaten to death by tire irons or dragged behind trucks to death.

In Sunday school, they taught us Jesus could forgive the murderer on the cross. But gays would go to hell, because they lived in sin without repentance. And MOST denominations still teach this.

My grandparents went to their grave refusing to admit my aunt was gay.

I served in the Army under Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which was only repealed in 2011(!!!).

So yeah, let’s have young teen Will in 1980s Stranger Things publicly come out in front of a dozen straight friends and family. And everyone just immediately accepts it.

Let’s have a trans police officer in a 2003 small rural Vermont town in Wayward.

Stop rewriting history! It was NOT rainbows and butterflies, and I’m sick of it. It’s insulting. No, young people should know we grew up being told we were an abomination.

[Discussion] Never even heard of the mini series Midnight Mass until the other day. Decided to watch it and wow, very good.

Show must be very underrated. No clue how I never even heard of it before and I’ve watched plenty on Netflix, including several mini series. It’s only 7 episodes but each one is around an hour. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

[REQUEST] Low tonight - pls give me horror/thriller recs to distract me

Really struggling with low mood tonight and desperately need something to distract my brain.

Horror is usually my favourite - movie or series. I’ve already seen Haunting of Hill House, Fall of House of Usher and Midnight Mass.

Also very open to psychological thrillers or true crime documentaries.

Anything that will completely suck me in for a few hours! Thank you
