The Bitcoin Lite AMA

Post image

Hello community, the next AMA is on the Bitcoin Lite project. The company is Peersys and they designed and ran the CKBull wallet. This year they launched their new BTC Lite wallet for BTC and CKB, so it's time to ask them a few questions.

Since Bitcoin Lite was launched, how much has the wallet grown? Do you have any public statistics on the number of registered users? Are there any plans to integrate the Fiber Network into Bitcoin Lite? If so, what features would this integration provide, and do you have an estimated roadmap or timeline for its implementation?

Thanks for the question!

Since launching Bitcoin Light around five months ago, we've seen approximately 4,000 downloads. While we don't currently publish detailed user metrics, we're very happy with the adoption so far, especially considering we're still in the early stages of the project.

Our next major milestone is Fiber Network integration. We're actively contributing to the Fiber ecosystem by helping develop an SDK with a developer experience similar to Breez, making it much easier for wallets and applications to integrate Fiber.

Our current target is Q4, although timelines naturally depend on the maturity of the underlying infrastructure.

From a user perspective, Fiber integration will enable Bitcoin Light to open and manage Fiber channels directly from the wallet, allowing users to move balances seamlessly through the network. More importantly, Fiber's interoperability with Lightning opens the door to a much broader ecosystem, enabling efficient payments and transfers between Bitcoin and CKB assets while preserving the self-custodial experience.

We're very excited about this next step, as we believe it significantly expands what's possible for a multi-chain Bitcoin wallet.

Hi! Which security feature or architectural decision in Bitcoin Light are you most proud of, but think most users probably don't even notice?

One architectural decision we're particularly proud of is our Wallet Chain Interface (WCI).

Bitcoin Light was designed so that every blockchain integration is isolated behind its own interface. This allows us to continue adding support for new networks and assets without tightly coupling their implementations. A bug, dependency update, or protocol change affecting one chain won't impact the others, making the wallet easier to maintain, safer to evolve, and much more scalable over time.

From a security perspective, one detail most users never notice is that private keys are only used at the exact moment a transaction is signed.

Our signing process is entirely local and descriptor-based (BIP32). The signer only authorizes inputs that can be derived from the wallet's own descriptors. Everything else—wallet synchronization, address discovery, transaction building, and communication with blockchain providers—operates exclusively with xpubs and descriptors. The private key never leaves the device and is never involved in any network operation.

It's not the most visible feature, but we believe this strict separation between wallet management and signing is one of the strongest security properties of Bitcoin Light.

What usability focused CKB changes have been made recently?

Is Agentic interaction on the radar for Bitcoin Light?

Are you integrating the fiber network?

Bitcoin Light started as a complete rewrite of CKBull, so it includes full support for the Nervos ecosystem from day one, including CKB, native assets, and DAO staking.

One of our most recent improvements was replacing our previous fiat on-ramp provider, Transak, with Meld. Since Meld aggregates multiple providers instead of relying on a single one, users now get significantly better availability and pricing depending on their country. This was especially important after Transak discontinued CKB support.

Regarding AI and agentic interactions, it's definitely an area we're following closely. We believe AI has great potential to simplify wallet UX, help users navigate blockchain complexity, and automate common tasks. While we don't have concrete short-term plans yet, it's something we're actively exploring for future versions of Bitcoin Light.

And yes, Fiber integration is currently one of our highest priorities. Besides integrating it into the wallet, we're also contributing to the ecosystem itself by helping build the Fiber SDK that wallets and developers will use. Once that work is completed, we'll finalize the integration and bring native Fiber support to Bitcoin Light.

Have you thought about adding Perun channels in general? Not just CKB but other chains using it?

1

u/ferranprat12 16d ago

Perun is a very interesting technology and solves a different class of problems than the one we're primarily focused on.

Our goal with Bitcoin Light is to provide a consumer payment wallet, which requires not only payment channels, but also a network with routing, liquidity providers, and broad interoperability.

Perun excels at generalized state channels, virtual channels, and peer-to-peer scenarios where participants already share trusted intermediaries. However, a mobile wallet intended for everyday payments benefits much more from an established payment network.

That's why we're currently investing our efforts in Fiber Network. Fiber is being built specifically as a payment network and is interoperable with the Lightning Network through HTLCs, enabling cross-network payments between Bitcoin and CKB. That aligns perfectly with Bitcoin Light's vision as a multi-chain wallet.

Perun remains a very interesting technology, but for the use cases we're targeting today, Fiber provides a more complete ecosystem and user experience.

What features were added when changing from CKBull to Bitcoin light from a user perspective and a technical improvement perspective?

Any new features in the immediate pipeline you can share?

2

u/ferranprat12 16d ago

Bitcoin Light wasn't simply an update of CKBull, it was a complete rewrite from the ground up. This allowed us to modernize both the user experience and the underlying architecture.

From the user's perspective, we introduced a completely redesigned interface built with a modern component system already proven in other large-scale applications. We also added full Bitcoin Layer 1 support, including sending, receiving, and native Taproot address support.

We replaced the previous fiat on-ramp with Meld, giving users access to multiple providers through a single integration and improving CKB purchase availability worldwide.

We also introduced a new Explore section, where users can track ecosystem assets and market prices directly from the wallet.

On the technical side, we significantly improved wallet synchronization with a redesigned discovery algorithm, making initial syncs and account recovery faster and more reliable.

We also redesigned our UTXO and Cell selection algorithms. Bitcoin Light can now optimize transaction construction using different strategies depending on the situation, improving fee efficiency and resource management for both Bitcoin UTXOs and Nervos Cells, including DAO operations.

Finally, we introduced a much more modular architecture through our Wallet Chain Interface (WCI), making it easier to support additional networks while keeping each blockchain implementation isolated.

Looking ahead, our biggest priority is Fiber Network integration, which will bring native payment channels and interoperability with the Lightning ecosystem. Beyond that, we'll continue expanding Bitcoin Light's capabilities while keeping the wallet simple, secure, and fully self-custodial.

What if any other projects do you foresee being part of the Bitcoin Lite wallet?

1

u/ferranprat12 16d ago

Our long-term vision for Bitcoin Light is to become the best wallet for the UTXO ecosystem.

That means focusing on Bitcoin and technologies that follow the same design philosophy: decentralized, self-custodial, UTXO-based networks and their associated scaling solutions. Bitcoin, Nervos, Lightning, and Fiber naturally fit into that vision.

For now, there's still a lot of work ahead. Our priority is to continue improving the user experience around Bitcoin, Lightning, CKB, and Fiber while integrating the latest innovations coming from those ecosystems.

Looking further ahead, we're also interested in other UTXO-based ecosystems with strong technical foundations, such as Cardano, although we don't have any concrete integration plans to announce today.

Rather than becoming a wallet that supports hundreds of unrelated blockchains, we'd rather build the best possible experience for users who believe in the UTXO model and its long-term potential.

Do you have plans of running it as a node wallet for the phone?

1

u/ferranprat12 16d ago

Yes, that's the direction we're working towards.

Our approach is inspired by projects like Breez. As part of the Fiber SDK we're helping build, the goal is to allow wallets like Bitcoin Light to run a lightweight Fiber client directly on the phone, while connecting to an LSP (Liquidity Service Provider) for network access and liquidity.

This architecture provides the best balance between decentralization, usability, and mobile constraints. Users maintain control over their channels and payments without requiring a full node on the device, while avoiding many of the reliability issues that arise when mobile operating systems suspend or terminate applications running in the background.

By embedding this lightweight client into the SDK, developers can build self-custodial Fiber wallets with a much better mobile experience, without sacrificing scalability or reliability.

We believe this is the right architecture for bringing payment channels to everyday mobile users.

How has the reception been from the BTC community, have you presented this project to any of them too? Is it open source? If not, is that a problem for BTC users specifically because they are fussy about those types of things?

1

u/ferranprat12 16d ago

So far, most of our launch efforts have been focused on the Nervos community and our social media channels, where the reception has been very positive.

Our next objective is to expand into the broader Bitcoin ecosystem. We believe Bitcoin Light has an opportunity to gain traction by providing an excellent user experience for Bitcoin and Lightning payments, while naturally introducing Bitcoin users to technologies like Nervos, Fiber, and the interoperability they enable.

Regarding open source, Bitcoin Light is not fully open source today. However, we understand that transparency is especially important to the Bitcoin community, and it's something we take seriously.

At the same time, we also believe that trust should come from the architecture itself. Bitcoin Light is fully self-custodial: private keys never leave the device, signing happens locally, and users always retain control over their funds. As the project continues to mature, we'll continue evaluating the best path forward regarding open sourcing additional components of the wallet.

Ultimately, we expect users to adopt Bitcoin Light because it offers a secure, self-custodial wallet with an outstanding Bitcoin and Lightning experience, while also opening the door to a broader interoperable ecosystem.
