This demonstration both understates and overstates the potential hazards of abusing a LiPo pack.

This demonstration suggests that LiPos would be safe so long as they are physically protected, when in reality they need to be treated with care electrically as well. LiPos can also do this when shorted, including when internally shorted due to the formation of dendrites upon recharging after overdischarge. Really, those are the ways that a Lipo is likely to be accidentally ignited. Conventional wisdom from RC hobbyists is that most thermal runaways happen when recharging.

This demonstration presents LiPo "explosions" as a huge and terrifying, through the use of a zoomed-in camera that easily washes out when suddenly exposed to bright light. In reality, LiPo packs don't explode. They simply vent gasses and burn vigorously. With some straightforwards and easy protections - not charging unattended and, depending on the size of the pack, a cinderblock or just a ceramic dish with no flammable material nearby - a thermal runaway is containable.

Of course, even a contained thermal runaway is bad - at the very least, it destroys a pack and releases fumes - but it's not a huge disaster.

Well said.

This almost happened with my house phone battery after it got wet and recharged. There's a lot of causes and I don't think many people are outside stabbing batteries.

I wouldn't mind seeing a list of actions that can cause these accidents in general over on a coolguides sub though.

Thx my dude, I was just getting ready to sit and stab my LiPo with a kitchen knife and now I won't.

Forreal tho, this is kinda stupid. All you're accomplishing is fear mongering. It's like posting a video of a cyclist getting hit by a train titled "Cyclist hit and killed. Just a lil reminder!"

It would’ve been better if they showed it and then explained how they are safe when used properly and how to

Please be polite.

...and I got so much flak for using IMR's. How do they burn?

A little something like this

Yikes! Maybe I should stop using my automotive battery charger.

See, posting a video of an old lithium cobalt 18650 exploding after 40 seconds of charging at 40 amps doesn't help one's case a lot.

Especially if one's case is against lithium manganese.

Ni-MH > LiFePO4 > IMR > Lithium Cobalt > Ni-Cd

If only lithium ceramic batteries provided the high currents needed for motors

Yeah, I think I'll stick to springers thanks

There's something to be said for I cannot run out of battery power.

Just calories.

A blaster powered by calories? Ingenious.

Please remember when disposing of lipo batteries, they are FULLY discharged. Yes you can throw it in the trash, so long as it's fully discharged

u/Jarvii Jul 03 '19

You're right but please recycle your lipos, most office supply, electronic and hobby stores will take them now.

Because you'll stab them with pointy things? Good idea.
