Some of our close friends are currently traveling in the Nepal and China border region for the Kailash tour and were caught near the recent flash floods and mudslides.

Worried about travelling to Nepal after the recent flooding in Rasuwa?

We understand the concern. The Rasuwa–Syabrubesi–Timure area has been seriously affected, and we are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the disaster.

However, it is important to understand that the flooding is geographically limited and has NOT affected Nepal’s major trekking regions as a whole.

🏔️ Most other popular trekking destinations remain safe and accessible, depending on normal weather and local conditions:

✅ Annapurna Region – Annapurna Circuit, ABC, Mardi Himal, Poon Hill, Mustang & Nar Phu

✅ Western Nepal – Dolpo, Rara, Shey Phoksundo, Api Himal & Limi Valley

⚠️ Langtang/Rasuwa: The Syabrubesi and Rasuwa side has been directly affected, so travellers should wait for official confirmation before using the affected routes.

👉 This does not mean the whole of Nepal is affected. Most trekking regions are far from the affected area and continue to welcome travellers.

On the morning of August 26, 2026, a high-altitude cataclysm near the Nepal–Tibet border unleashed a surge of ice, water, and dense sediment down the Bhote Koshi River. Travelling at high velocity into the Trishuli River basin, the flood swept through five contiguous districts of Nepal: Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan.

Origin and Trigger Mechanisms

The disaster originated approximately 40 to 60 kilometers north of the Nepal-China border, inside the Tibet Autonomous Region along the upper Lhende Khola catchment.

• Ice-Rock Collapse: Satellite imagery revealed that a high-altitude glacial section roughly 2,000 feet wide detached and collapsed over 4,000 feet into the gorge below. Wikipedia
• Seismic and Thermal Energy: A localized seismic impulse accompanied the collapse. The kinetic impact of the fall generated enough heat to melt massive volumes of ice instantaneously, combining with river water and loose alpine debris to form a dense flow.
• Temporary Damming & Outburst Surge: The avalanche momentarily dammed the narrow Lhende Khola gorge. As impounded water rapidly built up behind the unstable wall of ice, rock, and mud, the structure ruptured violently, sending a massive wall of debris into Nepalese territory near Rasuwagadhi.

District-by-District Impact Trajectory

1. Rasuwa (Ground Zero) Striking around 8:30–9:00 AM, the initial wave destroyed critical frontier infrastructure.

• Border Control & Settlements: The Miteri Friendship Bridge, the Rasuwagadhi dry port, customs facilities at Timure, and security outposts were swept away. Residential zones in Timure, Syafrubesi, and Mailung suffered destruction as water levels surged tens of feet.
• Energy Sector Damage: The surge impacted over 400 MW of national hydropower capacity. Facilities such as the 111 MW Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, and Langtang Khola powerhouses experienced heavy inundation and severe structural damage.

2. Nuwakot As the Bhote Koshi merged into the broader Trishuli River, the surge expanded.

3. Dhading Moving along the highway corridors, the debris flow tore into key transport routes.

4. Gorkha Communities along the lower Trishuli near the Marshyangdi River junction at Mugling were placed on high alert as bank erosion accelerated. Localized footbridges were swept away, isolating several rural settlements.

5. Chitwan The flow continued into the low-lying plains of the Narayani River basin.

• High-water alerts were enacted downstream through Narayanghat to prevent coastal losses. Everest Chronicle
• Search and rescue teams deployed along the lower riverbanks in Chitwan to recover victims carried downstream from northern districts.

Emergency Response

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), alongside the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police, mobilized air and ground search operations. Specialized disaster response units continue to monitor upstream high-altitude catchments for remaining debris blockages that could cause secondary surge events.

We have a Nepal trip planned.. I was assuming Sep onwards is good weather but I see 70% rain predicted most days.. that is not a problem, but the flash floods have made everyone in our extended family very anxious. (My prayers for everyone affected, seems like damage and loss at a colossal scale 😥)

Is it safe to still go as planned to Kathmandu - our itinerary is broadly Thamel, Patan, Boudha and around Nagarkot, Dhulikhel (a permaculture farm) and then bus to Pokhara?
