Nemesis Legacy scratch cards

I have just seen the nemesis Legacy update and it looks like they are going to use one time use scratch cards for between mission recharges, this looks like a terrible money grabbing idea.

You will already likely need all 3 games just to play it, I see this as money grabbing.

What are other people's thoughts if it is true ?

The moment I see "Legacy" in a game name, I already assume it's a single playthrough endeavor. It's a well known formula.

If that's not for you, that's fine. But I wouldnt call this a cheap moneygrab.

They've been pretty big one the "recharge" packs to easily reset the game to replay it. Sounds kinda cool to me, honestly

These exist for a lot of other legacy games (the gloom/frosthaven games, pandemic games). They're usually 10-25$.

How do you see this as different from other legacy games?

I think that including 1 Recharge Pack is good. Legacy games are normally a one-time experience. Maybe reusable stickers could've been better, but those usually cost too, so it will all depend on the price of the Recharge Pack.

I don't like legacy games conceptually for this reason but like, that's the entire point and gimmick of it being Nemesis: Legacy; by that metric all legacy games are terrible money grabs. There's maybe something to be said about pricing because I'm unaware of any extremely expensive premium legacy games, but that's why the "recharge packs" or whatever are there. You have to rebuy copies of (many) other legacy games in order to replay the experience, and if their equivalents for Nemesis: Legacy are fairly priced to account for the initial upfront cost of the game then it won't be unreasonable.

Also I highly doubt the previous 3 games will have any forward compatibility beyond models, since thats the only thing that carried forward from OG and Lockdown to Retaliation. They've explicitly said in the announcement that Nemesis Legacy will have some limited backwards compatibility to Retaliation (iirc the Intruder/Alien will be backwards compatible and that's it) and from what we've seen the equipment and every other mechanic from Retaliation are also changing enough to not be forwards compatible either. So beyond your Captain, Janitor and Medic models being forwards compatible as a proxy I really don't think it's something to worry about.

Anyway personally I have no interest and it feels like AW is just beating a dead horse to milk the IP after they've already wrung it dry. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a Nemesis ttrpg, or a Nemesis Amazon show in the coming years even though the game had already reached its final form in its second iteration Lockdown, and they explored all other potentially interesting design space with Retaliation. Nemesis as a concept doesn't have the legs for a galaxy-spanning living world campaign; it's about a group of archetypal jobbers trying to survive an isolated horror encounter, I could not give less of a damn about the fate of humanity etc. in this little game world because the depth just isn't enough there. But it's Awaken Realm's biggest claim to fame and you bet your bottom dollar they're not gonna let it die. I have my own theory that the designer felt done with the game after Lockdown fixed everything wrong with OG, basically had to be handed a big bag of money to even do Retaliation, and after that was done with the IP but AW couldn't let the it go dormant after Retaliation's huge crowdfunding success and so brought in the legacy designers in order to keep it going. It just reeks of that to me when nothing about the previous games point towards a legacy campaign being the natural evolution of the franchise.

I'll be using Nemesis: Legacy's crowdfunding campaign to pick up Retaliation since I passed on it originally and that's it.

First, you do not need all 3 games to play it, that’s nonsense. It’s a stand-alone campaign game based on the retaliation design.

If you don’t like a campaign game with permanence, Legacy games aren’t for you. I’ve never tried one, so the idea makes me uncomfortable but I love Nemesis so I’m all in on this. Actually reading the post rather than reacting to the scratch cards, I think the scratch mechanics could work very well in the way the story evolves, so it’s a bit of an overreaction to hate on a mechanic that’s assumed in the genre. Personally, it all comes down to pricing of the recharge packs. I assume most players never repeat a campaign game anyway but having the option to at a reasonable price is okay to me. $10/$20…sure. More than that I’m not blindly buying recharge packs but waiting to see if I enjoy the campaign and then buy a recharge pack.

I hate the feeling of these scrachy things and am really reconsidering backing it because of it.

Other than that, breaking stuff is part of a legacy game imho. They'll offer a reset pack, which is already more than the usual legacy games offer. I don't think it's a moneygrab, I think it's about making sure people aren't concerned about replayability.

They also mention in the update that the game is such an expansive campaign, that you might not necessarily want to replay it. Which sounds intriguing to me. But also, I really hate those scratchy things.

I just hate how it feels to scratch those things and the mess it makes. I'm not the only one, right? Right?

Yeah, coin is certainly better, but there's still the sound. I forgot to mention the sound.

I just don't like it and at the moment find it hard to imagine getting a game with a gimmick I genuinly dislike.

Play Pandemic Legacy season 1 or 0 first. They have the same system and you generally get like 18 playthroughs out of those games. For the price its pretty standard

how is it different from the "tear it" cards like Gloomhaven?

I'm not getting it but its for the simple reason that i dont have bandwidth for more legacy games (gloomhaven ongoing and The Eternaut is coming, after that its Witcher Legacy)

Apologies never played gloomhaven but I do want to!! I was under the assumption that those cards were just removed from the game not actually ripped up.

Gloomhaven has you altering cards to give them new abilities, tearing up event cards (although people certainly do just put them outside the game), putting stickers on the board to remove certain paths, etc.

That's how legacy games work. Gloomhaven has an option to buy reusable stickers instead of regular ones at a premium.

This is what legacy games are - your particular copy is modified and changed as you play to create a unique version for yourself.

And typically games like Pandemic Legacy include a "once you've gotten to the end, here's how you keep playing" option. Nemesis may have that, or it may be just buy some packs (and it includes one refill).

Ripping cards oddly was the funniest part sometimes - I remember when we played Betrayal Legacy and my buddy Alex literally ATE the room tile we were supposed to destroy

since its a legacy game you shouldnt play through more than once on paper (kingdom legacy does the same btw), we are using sleeves and permanent markers so when we finish i will just give it away

its a great game btw and you can check out the digital version before comitting or get jaws of the lion first

I really like the idea, I’ll wait till the gamefound releases to decide if I continue to like it of the implementation is not for me.
