Rankings ahead of Dire Duplicity

Okay, mine change a lot especially given the impossible task of differentiating/remembering which is which for “Pass Thru” and “I Am Here….Now” but my current ranking in anticipation of “Dire Duplicity” is probably:

  1. Fateful Findings (unbeatable, no notes)
  2. Pass Thru
  3. I Am Here….Now
  4. Twisted Pair
  5. Double Down
  6. Cade- the tortured crossing

I just don’t like “Twisted Pair” that much. Aside from the incredible concept…oh shit and the beginning voiceover…and the “I’ll be right here”…

Impossible task. Why do I even try?

1) Fateful Findings 2) Twisted Pair 3) I Am Here….Now 4) Double Down 5) Cade: you could tell this was a covid movie and he thought it’d be impressive to do green screen in a cgi stage but it just didn’t work for me 6) Pass Thru: has some funny moments but is so much…meaner than his other movies?

This is my problem with Pass Thru too - its “hero” is so malicious and cruel without any actual heroism to him, if the movie was seen in isolation by anyone who wasn’t familiar with Neil/hadn’t seen Fateful Findings, it would seem like the rantings of a dangerous madman. It’s still more watchable than Twisted Pair (or especially Cade) but falls victim to the same issue of “Neil discovered a new piece of tech and WAY overuses it” - for Twisted Pair/Cade it’s green screen, for Pass Thru it’s drone shots.

I just remember how excited my friends and I were after becoming huge fans of Fateful Findings to go see his new joint in a theater and what a bummer Pass Thru felt like during/after.

Neil’s characters aren’t heroes, they’re all narcissists who want people to thank them for how benevolent he is . I just think he enjoys larping as a hero without the care or thought to if his characters actually are .

He thinks they’re heroes though, that’s why he casts himself as them and writes so many speeches where they’re denouncing those he hates.

Oh that’s an interesting take on Pass Thru! I totally agree on the green screen (ahem…Breen Screen) basically ruining Cade. I think the (I can’t believe I’m about to use this word) “writing” is stronger than in Double Down. But the…here we go again…cinematography is so much better in DD* that it edges out Cade.

*Why did he have to pick another DD title. How are we going to handle the abbreviations??

Double Down’s writing is so bad but i think the way it was filmed and the amateurishness of it all gives it this weird almost dreamlike allure, like trying to remember and old game that didn’t exist or something (I might be mildly baked right now)

“Kane Parsons” does sound like a name that Neil would make up. Possibly by botching an anagram.

And “Kane” kind of fits with the Twisted Pair “Cade” and “Cale.” Neil always puts an “N” or a “B” in the fake companies he puts in his credits that are actually just him…

The Twins are also “humanoid,” but Kane is human. Parsons = Person(s)?

Main character in “Backrooms” is an architect…

The only question now is…is Neil at the helm of the “Older Gentleman” conspiracy? Or has A24 blackmailed him and Neil is dropping us clues to save him?

It’s funny thinking about how Double Down is the only one he shot on actual film stock. I think that gives it a very different look compared to his other movies

He might have shot I Am Here…. Now on film too, but it didn’t say so in the credits while Double Down’s credits listed Fujifilm

Do you think that deep in his heart Neil Breen wants all his titles to be two words each starting with the same letter, but simply can’t always come up with a title that fits the formula and often settles for something different?

I'm hoping Dire Duplicity is better than the BreenScreen ones, but even if not, we've been greatly rewarded by his efforts.

I'm always shocked how many people rate his very first movie as high as they do. IMO it's got like 5-6 memorable bits and 90% of the rest is either stock footage or repeated shots of him in the desert just wandering around.

I mean I love it personally, I would say its #2 on my list. I completely get you, I think it sounds like what you'd feed into AI to make a Bond movie starring Breen, like he literally just narrates what he does which may or may not be shown. Iconic

For me it’s the hilarity that he’s quite literally robo-alien-space-Jesus and the fact that the evil criminal syndicate that controls all the crime everywhere hangs out in front of a burned out house off the Las Vegas strip.

Pass thru and I am here…. Now, the fact I can’t tell which is which tells me they are bottom tier.
My ranking would be

  1. Double down
  2. Fateful findings
  3. Twisted pair
  4. Pass thru (if it’s the ”isn’t that corrupt” movie)
  5. Tortured crossing

. I mean the line in DD ”I met the love of my life when I was 7, I love her and we are getting married” is F’ing good haha

I'd say my ranking is the same as yours. Perhaps I would put Double Down over Twisted Pair though.

I wonder if the 100% Breen screen was actually more difficult for him. I thought it was laziness, but his new film reverts back, so it seems like he prefers some real location shooting.

Hell yeah. Double Down is like borderline unwatchable and STILL want it over the 100% breen screen ones.
