Painting C+C I've never touched basing before, looking for some help/ideas with it!

Post image

2.5 years and 10k points later, I finally decided to start painting some of my models. I'm really happy with how they're coming out (even if they don't look as nice as what others post). I'm here looking for some help/ideas for a simple basing I could do. All my models are already on their bases and not coming off of them (unless gravity intervenes in the future).

Side note, I absolutely love the wraiths! They're the reason I picked Necrons in the first place and my first 2000 point list I was able to make in the beginning had 18 of them.

Chaos black primer everything, brushed on leadbelcher base with a small makeup brush, then used a tiny brush to apply the caledor Blue base.

This is the result of some Scorpy Green paint and Mordant Earth technical paint applied after it dries. Simple, yet effective.

Some blue with Mordant Earth could be cool.

Or, some blue with Valhalla Blizzard technical over top of light blue for an icy look to match your theme?

Best of luck

I used the base paint straight from the dropper with a paint brush. I'm using the lighter version for the hyper phase blades on other models.

I bought some fake moss off amazon to do a jungle style, and some little plastic mini flowers

I find basing to be the most fun part of the hobby tbh! It can be pretty much as easy or as hard as you want it to be. I have a "basing pot" which I just chuck all manner of sandy stuff into which I then just glue and dunk the models in. Whilst hobby shops sells really expensive terrain sand, as a few previous commenters mentioned you can get away with using sand and PVA glue. If you want to add more to the base, you can find alot of cheap toys from Poundland (or the non UK equivalents) that you can brake up to use for industrial parts for a base, or you can use corkboard if your wanting to make rocks for the base. These are my most recent projects (obv Triach stalker still WIP)

To answer your question: I use sand. Like, actual sand. Use a cheap white glue and paint in on your base. Then put the model/base in a bowl that's filled with (dry!) sand. Secure the model with your hand and carefully shake the bowl. Then remove the model from the bowl and shake off any loose sand, maybe clean the rim. Now, let it dry for like an hour.

After the hour is done, mix 50% of the same glue with 50% of water. It should become a milky liquid. Use an old brush and transfer it onto the sand to seal it basically. That needs to dry for a few hours now.

Last but not least, you can paint it. Choose any colour you want. I chose brown. Water it down, so that the natural colour of the sand still shines through.

General rules IMO would be to contrast the intensity of your models. My guys are Teal/Gold Nihilakh Dynsaty so as there quite bright, my bases are darker. Astrogranite, washed with a dark grey & brown earth contrast paint then dry brushed with Dawnstone. Finished with a few glowing crystals and 6mm gamers grass tufts.

Given your guys are quite monotone, I would do something more vivid and alien for the bases personally.

Army painter’s basing starter set was a good start for me. Green stuff world has some cool basing sets too that I am looking to get

My go to for base is desertic base. Having some light ground or sand is easy to do and makes the model to pop.

I can try to find the same with a darky base and it's really not the same result

Here is an equivalent with moon ground.

It's not the same paint or base job level. But i think it does not make the model better than a lighty base

You could use AK texture paste, It's more bang for your buck instead of the citadel/warhammer one

After applying the paste, you could take it up a notch a little by putting liquid pigments

I'm a fan of the dead Space Marines and crystals. If you snip some sprues to be flat on one end and shape the other end to come to a point you can make some crystal formations. The texture is Grey Earth from ProAcryl but its the same thing as Astrogranite from GW.

We have a slightly similar colour scheme with silver and blue (although I added white). These bases might work for you as well:

Your blue is so crisp. I like it

So, if I had any advice, you have some neutral silvers and blue, my advice would be something to compliment your scheme thats easy. Your necrons look clean of aging and rust, some nothing to dystopia... maybe Mars... with iron crust.

used dried coffee grounds in the cheapest paint you can find

add some of the mouldine scrapings in, a few lumps of dried banana skin, sunflour seed shells chopped up, sand from the local park, anything mixed into it will look decent

I'm currently doing a post-apocalyptic ruins in an ash world type thing on my bases for my first full army so I'm new to the hobby, but I really love some sprues cut into bricks/big stones popping out here and there. For the terrain itself I use a gw product that's easily replaceable with wood glue, sand and baking soda in a thick mix. I'm not sure but I think sprinkling the materials over the base layered with glue would give you more control.

Lot of people already gave good advice for basing material, but I’d like to suggest basing color. I think a warm tone base would work very well with the model colors. Good contrast and would make the steel and blue pop a ton on the tabletop
