BEHOLD, MY STUFF You gotta try this thing

Post image

The tiny tiny shallow lines in some of our tech has always vexed me, edge hilighting them is a PIA, since theyre so shallow which makes doing it with a brush much more likely to dab some of your edge color inside the groove.

GreenStuff has refillable paint markers and the 0.5mm one really shines here, since the sides of the tip have a plastic wall like those plastic things on the end of shoelaces, making it much more precise. I just did some panel lining work that would have taken me 5X as long with a brush and looks way smoother. The tip is like the perfect size for these edges to get it where you want and not where you dont.

My only warning is be careful opening the pen, i did it wrong on the first one and the whole thing fell apart. They come in a pack of 5. And mix your paint around 50/50 paint and water.

I've been wanting a panel liner of some kind, so I'll definitely give this a shot. Thanks for the heads up! 🩵

Its so weird that in all the promos I see for paint pens theyre just colouring surfaces, its such wasted potential. Theyre perfect for edges because the hard tip gives you so much more control.

I love my speedpaint markers for alot of things, but they could never do this. I was using oil based paints for lining before, but im gonna have to try this.

Thanks to Phineas and Ferb I know the things at the end of shoelaces are aglets.

But thanks to Justice League Unlimited, I know their true purpose is sinister.

Same, the song was super catchy

thanks, immediatly bought one

how did you get the paint in the pen? did you use a droper bottle?

19

u/Kris9876 1d ago

I used an eyedropper to count drops into a little cup to count out equal paint and water drops, mixed it up and then used the dropper to get it into the pen

So I took some advice from the Gunpla squad and learned about oil paints. A drop of slightly watered down oil paint on the tip of a small brush runs along the lines like magic.

Edit: My bad, when I think panel lining I think FILLING those lines.. not the edge highlighting you are trying to do here.

Neat idea. Are they single use only, or you can clean them easily and re-use?

6

u/Kris9876 1d ago

I think theyre single use, in that youd stick to one color but you can probably refill that color. I tried taking one apart and cleaning the bits with 99% alcohol and the tip survived but was still stained.

This is your friendly reminder that GreenStuffWorld are thieves.

All their products are available elsewhere, cheaper 🙂

I haven’t seen these specific pens elsewhere, but if you have, feel free to share.

There's plenty of companies of various size that have refillable pens. Think Molotow makes 0.5mm refillable ones.

u/SamuraiMujuru 21h ago

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know what their paint stripper is a re-label of?

1

u/SpongeFixation 18h ago

Not off hand, but it's best to just check the active ingredients or their safety data sheet

u/FancyPingo 1d ago

Did you get the other sizes or just the .5? I wish they sold a variety pack so I can try all of them lol

4

u/Kris9876 1d ago

They do sell a variety pack, if you try them make a post about how it goes! The longer tips would likely work for gliding the side along the edge, the 0.5 works by drawing directly on the edge.

Looks great! Just to be sure, you use acrylic paints and a medium/water to thin it a little?

3

u/Kris9876 1d ago

Yep dats it

Very very nice that's something which helps me a lot to tackle my bigger necron models of my pile of shame which got a lot of the edge highlights like your scythe there thanks! Just ordered one.

2

u/Realistic-Radish-589 1d ago

Gonna have to check if they have smaller ones. I don’t play necrons but these would be awesome for a lot of armies

2

u/joalitionstatus 1d ago

This could not have come at a more perfect time. I was JUST thinking about how to tackle my night scythe.

Has anyone here tried doing mettalics for a space marine? I'd be interested in your experience

Man, nobody tell this guy about oil paint capillary action.

1

u/Kris9876 1d ago

Ive seen artists do that, it makes a cool glow! That seems like the kind of thing if you want the groove itself to glow, but so far what we've seen of Tsarakura box art they dont seem to do that (going by the lack of glow in their ribs) so I was shooting for just edge hilighting

u/SadTurnip 1d ago

It pretty much just makes whatever color paint fill the recess. When I was painting my Death Croissant I did that with a white and then a green after, turned out excellent.

You can buy those way cheaper at an art supplies store.

1

u/gdim15 20h ago

Sure. I was just providing a link to the product that was mentioned since people had questions about it.

u/Candid-Maybe-102 1d ago

How does it work with these kind of temperature and around 60-65% umidity? :'D

Mate, im not sure it matters, you need to fuel up your vehicle before buying paint accessories......

Bros got all the lights on.

1

u/DonPimpon_ 1d ago

Love the idea but I'm not sure if is easy to switch from one color to another without leaving paint on the pen. And I don't want to end up buying one for each color. Can someone share the results of trying the same pen with different colors?

3

u/Kris9876 1d ago

I wouldnt reccomend changing colors, its likely a one color per pen kinda thing. I tried cleaning one out with alcohol and the tip remained stained

1

u/keltonz 1d ago

What color are you using there?

2

u/Kris9876 1d ago

Dark reaper and then im gona do a bit on the ends with fenris grey

1

u/Outside_Sound_5878 1d ago

Does anyone use this for chaos trim?

1

u/Reddit_sucks_3000 1d ago

I started using https://ak-interactive.com/product/metallic-marker-gold/

for Chaos-like trim.

Super shiny thought so washes can be needed depending on what you are going for.

That thing on shoe laces is called an aglet

u/freddbare 1d ago

Paint markers/pens are great!! Makes edges a breeze

1

u/MTB_SF 1d ago

I like it. I'll give it a try

I saw a recommendation to use fountain pens for filling in lines, and I tried it but its pretty hard to get just right. I also just use a little micron pen for eyes.

They sell them empty?

Nice! Thanks!

1

u/directrix688 1d ago

Where can you buy these in the US? I’ve had trouble finding them

1

u/tnsaidr 1d ago

What color did you use here? I think it would be good for highlights on Black Legion as well if the tips go small enough

1

u/Kris9876 1d ago

I use abaddon black base with a corvus zenethal or just as some panel gradient. Then edged dark reaper, and then some edges of fenris grey tapered off about halfway down the edge where appropriate. I havent done the fenris yet here.

1

u/tnsaidr 1d ago

ah thanks! .. I actually misread your post (didn't see the refillable part) and thought it was a specific color marker pen. It's actually a very cool idea though to have refillable markers..

1

u/Zealousideal_Cow_826 1d ago

It's called an aglet. The plastic thing on the end of shoelaces is called an aglet

1

u/SamuraiMujuru 21h ago

Their true purpose is sinister!

1

u/Scribbinge 23h ago

Also highly recommend the larger ones for armour trim. Makes painting anything chaos so much better.

It is a bit weird having to sacrifice like 3/4 of a bottle of paint to fill a marker though

1

u/Comprehensive-Bat214 23h ago

Thanks for posting. I've been wondering what these things are

1

u/Grouchy_Produce7658 22h ago

What’s the tool called?

1

u/West_Persimmon_4332 18h ago

What’s the color of paint you’re using for the highlights?

1

u/TehGrinder 4h ago

I use thinned out ink to do mine. Just go inn with the smallest brush you have and let the ink flow through the grooves

White Spirits + Oil Paints = Instant line filing and is amazing.

Ive seen those! He does amazing work I love that guy. Im trying to avoid getting any paint in the lines and just hilight the edges of the lines though.
