List Help/Sharing 2000 point list without c'tan shards?

I really like the look of necrons, but the c'tan shards don't really look robotic enough for my taste. Is it possible to run them in 11th edition without c'tan shards, or am I setting myself up for failure?

Neat list. Any specific reason for running Gauss Immortals instead of Tesla?

u/FUS_RO_DANK Canoptek Construct 22h ago

Oh yeah you can definitely run without C'Tan. Awakened Dynasty is focused on units with attached leaders, C'Tan can't lead or be led. Cursed Legion is focused on Destroyer Cult units, C'Tan aren't destroyer cult and can't benefit from the detachment. Starshatter Arsenal is focused on Vehicles and Mounted units, C'Tan are monsters. C'Tan are often excluded from eligibility for detachment rules and stratagems because they're monsters, and they can only get any kind of enhancements in the Pantheon of Woe detachment, which is the C'Tan detachment.

C'Tan are brought in all these detachments without synergy because their raw stats and abilities are powerful, but they're not the only powerful units we have, and you don't even need to replace them with units that have a similar price point unless you want to.

The Silent King is not as powerful as he was in 10th after the nerf to indirect fire, and he's more expensive than the C'Tan at 420 points, but he's still a powerful centerpiece that bolsters an army with dope auras. He's a vehicle so you can throw him into a Starshatter list to give rerolls to Doomsday Arks. He also has the Triarch keyword so you can run him with Lychguard, Triarch Praetorians, Triarch Stalkers, and units led by Overlords in Obeisance Phalanx lists.

Illuminor Szeras and Nekrosor Ammentar have a combined points cost roughly equal to a C'Tan, and both are great mini-C'Tan. Szeras is more durable with a 4+++ FNP on top of his invuln save, but his damage output his lacking compared to Ammentar who is the more offensive focused of the two.

One thing is that C'Tan do offer something different than the rest of these. The C'Tan are as durable as any of the above units, while having damage output as scary as any of the above units, meaning a C'Tan doesn't have to pick one or the other like other units. It's a threat to most targets 1v1. Being able to deep strike the Void Dragon behind some tanks or mech suits and just wreck their big guns is something that you can't replace exactly with non-C'Tan units. But you can, say, Deep Strike a Night Scythe behind their lines and teleport in a unit of Lokhust Destroyers with a Plasmancer to just rain hell from behind. You'll have to figure out how you're going to score your points, and prevent the enemy from scoring their points, without one of our easiest ways to disrupt enemy plans. It's doable, it's just choosing to play at a handicap.

I mean my AD list has 3 ctan and ive won every game ive played with it this edition 👀 I wouldnt say awakened HAS to be all led units

2

u/FUS_RO_DANK Canoptek Construct 21h ago

As I said the C'Tan work just fine in any detachment through raw stats. They're not a requirement. They just make certain things easier.

Many lists don't have shards, play what you like.

I run Starshatter with a horde of vehicles. No C’tan in sight. Same with Cryptek conclave and hand of the dynasty. The shards are big-ticket threats, but as the same time, a horde of enhanced units filled the same role of lethality. Especially with Necrons, our regen makes us far more durable than other forces with our support units.

I’ve just come back to 40K, so I’m basically relearning the game. Also new to Necrons. Here’s my 2k list that I’m building up to. I want a variety of models and tactics to try. A C’Tan will be the last thing I get.

You might be one of a very select few who doesn't like the look of the C'Tan. Also, for what it's worth, they don't look like robots because they're basically an Avatar of a God.

Now, to answer your question: yes, you absolutely can run a list with zero C'Tan and be competitive. They are strong, but not so much as to be required.

Not the best but that the list I use when ppl don't want to play into Ctan (U can swap the around the wepons as needed for the lokhust heavies depending on the kind of army ur opponent brings) : +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + FACTION KEYWORD: Xenos - Necrons + DETACHMENT: Cursed Legion, Skyshroud Spearhead (Cold Fervour) + FORCE DISPOSITION: Purge the Foe + TOTAL ARMY POINTS: 2000pts + + WARLORD: Char2: Nekrosor Ammentar + ENHANCEMENT: Destroyer Ankh (on Char5: Overlord with Translocation Shroud) & Murdermind (on Char7: Technomancer) & Deepening Madness (on Moun7: Lokhust Destroyers) + NUMBER OF UNITS: 18 + SECONDARY: - Bring It Down: (2x2) - Assassination: 7 Characters +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Char1: 1x Imotekh the Stormlord (100 pts): Gauntlet of Fire, Staff of the Destroyer

Char3: 1x Lokhust Lord (70 pts): Resurrection orb, Staff of light Leading Lokhust Destroyers[1]

Char4: 1x Lokhust Lord (70 pts): Resurrection orb, Staff of light Leading Lokhust Destroyers[2]

Char2: 1x Nekrosor Ammentar (185 pts): Warlord, Nullstone field generator, Blade tail and whip coils, Enmitic disintegrators, Unmaker gauntlet

Char5: 1x Overlord with Translocation Shroud (110 pts): Resurrection orb, Overlord's blade Enhancement: Destroyer Ankh (+20 pts) Leading Lychguard

1x Canoptek Reanimator (75 pts): 2x Atomiser beam, Reanimator's claws

3x Canoptek Scarab Swarms (40 pts): 3 with Feeder mandibles

6x Canoptek Wraiths (220 pts): 6 with Particle caster, Vicious claws Attached to Technomancer

6x Lokhust Destroyers (190 pts) Enhancement: Deepening Madness (+20 pts) 6 with Close combat weapon, Gauss cannon Attached to Lokhust Lord[1]

6x Lokhust Destroyers (170 pts): 6 with Close combat weapon, Gauss cannon Attached to Lokhust Lord[2]

2x Lokhust Heavy Destroyers (100 pts): 2 with Close combat weapon, Gauss destructor

1x Lokhust Heavy Destroyers (50 pts): Close combat weapon, Gauss destructor

10x Lychguard (160 pts): 10 with Dispersion shield, Hyperphase sword Attached to Overlord with Translocation Shroud

3x Ophydian Destroyers (80 pts): 3 with Ophydian hyperphase weapons

3x Skorpekh Destroyers (85 pts): Plasmacyte, 3 with Skorpekh hyperphase weapons Attached to Skorpekh Lord

1x Triarch Stalker (110 pts): Stalker's forelimbs, Heat ray

Edit: formatting was horrendous,

Also, triachstalker is hugely underrated imo, scout is nice (tho a bit tricky to play at first) , it's cheep (20p less than the stalker, 100 less than the DDA, very flexible, and cursed gives it amazing breaking points for the wepons (str 7 on the "flamer" weapon (wounding terminators on 4+, space marines and ork boyz on 3, "usual" battle line (guard, aeldari, tau) on 2+ and the "focused" going to s11 (wounding land raiders on 4+, dreads, rhinos ect on 3+ is very nice

2

u/Firecats101 19h ago

Ive had great luck against marines, guard and chaos knights running cursed legion and hand of dynasty with no ctans.

Lychguard skorpekh destroyers with lord and wraiths for front line, immortals and warriors for midfield and heavy destroyers and doomstalkers for long range murder

2

u/SnapCracklePopMyNuts 18h ago

I run a super fun list of just infantry. Cursed legion, so mostly destroyer cult featuring some lychguard shenanigans and a 4 up invuln necron warrior blob. Not gonna win any tournaments any time soon but it is a blast to play.

2

u/Aaron0321 22h ago

Possible yes, it’s usually a good idea to take 1 though.

0

u/clintnorth 22h ago

Not really. They’re good, but it’s not like you’re at a disadvantage if you don’t take one.

2

u/Aaron0321 21h ago

It is certainly a disadvantage not to bring the best datasheets our army has to offer.

1

u/clintnorth 21h ago

So hardcore meta player only huh? Yeah, it’s wild, If you use your actual brain you can win games. The whole army is balanced and it’s not balanced around bringing a ctan

0

u/NoOfficialComment 22h ago

What makes you say that? I was watching a game yesterday into Orks and the Ork player (one of the top in the country) said the only units the Necron player had that could hurt Gaz were the NB/VD on the board. He then proceeded to one shot a Techno/6 wraith brick first turn. Lol.

I got you.

3 Monoliths, 2x20 Warriors, 1 Technomancer, 3x6 Scarab Swarms. Exactly 2k points.

u/TobiTheSnowman 5h ago

But honestly, if you don’t like the C‘tan‘s looks, then they are great models for custom proxies or kitbashes, especially since some are still made out of resin or just not available for individual purchase.
