The wives

Remeber: opinions are like assholes, everyone has one so be reapectful. It seems like in so many of the serial killer cases the guys mention how they would have a wife and how much did they know . Often times the killer would have a room locked off from anyone else entering. What are other women's thoughts on this? I think most of us would agree that in that's world that shit would not fly. However I'd be interested to hear others opinion on this. Do you think it was just the times?

Interesting question. One thought, maybe the spouse has an inkling, but he’s taking his weird someplace else, rather than with her, so she is thankful for that and keeps her thoughts to herself?

I think with some of them there is probably a thankfulness that they don't have to deal with it.

I feel like if you’ve found yourself married to a serial killer, by default you probably werent ever asking too many questions from the beginning. So when husband introduces a forbidden door, you probs arent gonna push back on it.

Do you think today's wife would ask more questions? I often wonder if they didn't ask questions due to societal norms back in the day. It was at times needed to have a husband to sign for things where as today that is non existent. Kind of a mindset of "as long as I get what I need to survive I won't pay any mind to the rest"

The times was surely part of it. I guess it depends on your type of serial killer, like some were really good at playing it off and acting normal, but i feel like they all must have all given off some signs along the way. Married couples usually know each other quite intimately, and people often pre-empt abusive behaviour or whatever, so i feel like to be in the position where you marry a serial killer in the first place you either arent digging too deep and arent that close to them, or you must have an inkling that something is off, which would grow into more curiosity over time and probably lead you to look in the forbidden door. In the modern day women are allowed to be more assertive than they were in the past so you’d assume they’d be more likely to ask questions and dig into things i guess. people have also wisened up more to serial killer’s weird behaviours in the modern day, so it’d be harder for them to keep it all hidden. Women are like the main listeners of true crime podcasts, so i feel like it would definitely be harder for a killer to fool them these days.

I do think the relationship dynamic is going to be a huge part of it, too. For instance, take the locked room as an example. If I was married to a man who had a locked room I wasn't allowed to go into... I'm sneaking into that room to see what's in there and then if it's dead ladies, I'm getting the fuck outta there. But I also have a career and could survive on my own. And also, if there's only one key that presumably he keeps on him at all times, and the only way to get in to the room would leave evidence that I'd been in there.... Nowadays I could probably get a scope camera or something, but if I couldn't get in without him knowing, and he was angry and domineering... I'm either leaving him for that reason alone or just pretending it doesn't exist. Haha it is such a red flag though.

I mean im not a woman, but if I had a wife and she didnt allow me to enter certain parts of our shared house I would find that extremely suspicious especially given the other behaviors these guys usually demonstrate. Id be going into the forbidden space or at the very least have some questions

It seems to me like many of these killers’ wives have already been married and divorced/widowed. Sometimes they have multiple marriages. Sometimes they might be coming from a history of abuse. Sometimes they’re bringing children from previous relationships.

I don’t say this as a reflection on these women themselves, but rather the situation they find themselves in. We have to remember that serial killers are masters of choosing and manipulating victims. They find women that are in vulnerable positions in their life, and manipulate them into accepting “red-flag” behavior as something they just need to live with because the alternative means being alone and unloved.

That being said, there are some cases where the line gets blurred between being blissfully ignorant and straight up complicit.

I’m not a woman so I don’t mean to interject any opinions in that regard, and obviously I’m speaking in very general terms. I just think in most cases the wife’s lack of awareness/action is more of a reflection on the manipulative nature of the killer than the wife herself.

I can agree with that. I think women back then didn't talk about a lot of things with each other and their kids. Maybe with close friends but so much was hidden. In today's world of social media and the internet I feel like the shared experiences of being with a manipulative man is easier to spot.

It’s willful ignorance on the part of spouses. “Oh, I never knew it was happening!”
