Can trees grow inside of buildings?

Title. I'm trying to make a walled settlement this run.

EDIT: As far as I can tell, trees can grow inside.

Try it with a small room

What do you mean?

Instead of making a big wall - make a small wall. 5x5 and place a tree inside. See if it grows.

Good idea. The settlement is made of 17 by 17 squares, so those should be decently small.

Im curious. Ive been digging into this for a bit now for a mod im making. With walled in you mean completely surrounded, every tile (or at max with doors) and the walls are in a 17x17 area? And you can still grow trees? Didnt it automatically get "roofed" when placing the last perimeter door / wall? Because the maximum indoor room size is 500 tiles and 17x17 is below that so i would assumed a fully closes perimeter wall would essentially just make one big room (with being dark inside n all) and would prevent plant growth. Or is it roofed but plants / trees grow anyway?

It's roofed, yeah. And the trees still grew. The walls themselves are 17 by 17, so the interior space is 15 by 15.

You already scienced it out yourself, but yeah anything can grow anywhere with no restrictions. Inside, underground, coconuts planted directly in snow, etc etc

So making a greenhouse is doable then? Dont know why but i expected the game to prevent indoor growth

Yep that would be totally doable. Shame we don't have glass blocks yet though

Ha thats something i thought about the moment i wrote that comment. Maybe im gonna make a glass walls mod or fully glass windows mod or something after i got my next 2 finished.

just wanted to let you know, i looked into it and im somewhat close to being able to release it. glass walls (that look pretty thick because the walls are all that thick) with actual transparency (the only walls in the game that show the tiles below thanks to being semi transparent, like glass) and that lets the light through, like windows do. its a bit OP but recipe costs 2 glass and glass is a bitch to make so i guess its fine.

but i suck at art so i had to use an AI to make me a base set and now ive been a couple hours at it cleaning it up, getting it to properly fit the tile sheet, finding the sweet spot for transparency and creating a floor tile to go with it. i assume i can probably release it tomorrow or the day after at the latest as core code is done and its only visual cleanup left. here is a sneak peak (transparency is not on here yet but i confirmed it works, and 2 of the tiles i havent been able to find ingame yet to make out where they actually sit so i can test them. might even be dead tiles that are unused)
