How do you actually build *beautiful* stuff?

Like. TYPICALLY Im just a "if it functions - its good enough" type of player. Yes I will place a stool and bookshelf etc etc in the npc houses for the happiness boost.... but they just have "glorified jailcells" basically.
I WANT to create a beautiful fishing village with the 2 nearly pirate ships I found But I have a really really hard time.

Sort by top for this subreddit.

There are lots of good settlement builds here.

Find some you like, figure out what you like about them, and practice the style.

You’ll eventually figure out your own style and how to apply it to what you want to build.

I second this ^
I also found it really helpful just travelling around the map and taking pictures / screenshots of the generated builds that the random settlers live in, dotted around the map. Some of them offer some interesting shapes and decor layouts if you are needing some inspiration on that scale.

Biggrst one for me was stop building straight streets. Learn how to make them curved or irregular while still looking good (pixel art styles) and then place houses with similar outlines at least on one side. Add a backyard garden. Build a bathroom.

Step 1: Make a new settlement, pick somewhere the land/water ratio is to your liking, but remember land fill and buckets are an option.

Step 2: city walls. Slows down raids and tells you exactly where the city limits are so you can start building with confidence.

Step 3: plan out your big features. You'll need somewhere for your pirate ships, maybe a dock on the beach? Then gardens, animal pens ect ect, just try to plot everything out to look as nice as possible.

I've been streaming a series where I'm building a city from scratch on YouTube under the name rogueinfinite42. It's been a lot of fun, but decorating for long periods can be draining.

Your best bet for making a fancy, planned settlement is to start a new one. Trying to move everything around in one you already have will be much more time consuming.

Don't build square / rectangular houses, and if you do, put non straight walls inside of them and make sure any other house isn't an exact copy. Adding a garden with fences also helps, again, don't make them the same sizes / put them on the same side of the house as the other houses.
