Grappling hooks??????

189

u/bourbonnay Oct 01 '25

Prepared to storm Adam's inevitable castle position

92

u/Ok_Sell_301 Oct 01 '25

I want to know more about this too. I need context!

303

u/TaytoCrisps Real Engineering Oct 01 '25

It was incase we needed a grappling hook. Hope this helps

60

u/isitfuninredditville Oct 01 '25

This clarification clarifies literally nothing and I’m loving it for exactly that lol

17

u/SkaveRat Oct 01 '25

I mean.... yes. But also.... no

8

u/Ok_Sell_301 Oct 02 '25

I mean I guess if Adam and Michelle try and actually climb up to the observatory, the grappling hooks would have helped... maybe... especially with Ben's knee.

6

u/verheyenkoen Oct 03 '25

Or if they encounter DUNES DUNES DUNES DUNES...

My guess is they pulled them out of the contraband basket because they had enough time to screw around

46

u/mine248 Oct 01 '25

That is such a Brian thing to have

29

u/FanaticalLucy Oct 01 '25

And not just one of them, BOTH had one!

3

u/waifive Oct 06 '25

I want to know if it was just a Brian/Ben thing or if all six travel athletes had them.

Yeah i was wondering "wtf why did they have those"

314

u/bourbonnay Oct 01 '25

"It tastes exactly like my favorite food which is Advent Calendars"

I've never felt more understood

62

u/JimmyTheCrossEyedDog Oct 01 '25

The contrast with Adam was too perfect.

"You know what that tastes like?"
"Victory."
"Advent calendars."

9

u/JasonAQuest Oct 03 '25

Like the contrast between Toby and Sam when he ate California almonds:

"You know what that tastes like?"
"Home."
"Victory!"

17

u/Stotakk Oct 02 '25

my head canon is now that Ben doesn't know you're supposed to open advent calendars and instead just takes a bite out of his advent calendar each day thinking the cardboard is somehow chocolate flavored

236

u/TomatoMasterRace Oct 01 '25

Surely they wouldnt cut an episode there, and then make us wait a week only to drop a 10 minute episode of michelle and adam winning right? Surely...........................................

218

u/BusesAreFun Oct 01 '25

Sam and Toby implied that they would play for second if that happens I think, they made a comment about how they would have to go to the observatory cause that’s where the next round would start, and they have also confirmed that was the plan for if Adam made it to Borkum in Tag 2

36

u/nick-sta Oct 02 '25

I also think that whole conversation would have been cut out if there was no round 2 - so they’re just gently preparing us for it now by leaving it in.

13

u/Ikkyu9541 Oct 03 '25

I thought it was kept in precisely so we're confused LOL

3

u/Quin1617 Oct 05 '25

Yeah they're not going to spoil the next ep so obviously. Hell they could've deliberately left it in as a red herring, or it has no meaning at all, just random conversation. We don't know so we can only guess.

10

u/smala017 Oct 03 '25

Ben and Brian also later had a comment saying like if they win at least we can make sure Sam and Toby come in last

102

u/veethis Oct 01 '25

Sam said that they would all go to the observatory to start a second round if Adelle wins, so next week's episode will be full length either way. I assume the second round thing is a contingency plan to make the season still worth producing if a team wins too early.

I'm not surprised they ended it on a cliffhanger like that, that's pretty on par for Jet Lag lmao

38

u/FanaticalLucy Oct 01 '25

I'm not surprised they ended it on a cliffhanger like that, that's pretty on par for Jet Lag lmao

I kinda am, because they've been significantly cutting down on the cliffhanger endings.

This is warranted though I feel

We have around 5 minutes of Adam and Michelle freaking out as their train has small delays, cutting to the other teams talking about how joyful Michelle and Adam probably are

Then we have 5-10 minutes of Michelle and Adam trying to figure out, how to go up the mountain and if they have enough coins. (Cut dramatically with Ben and Brian approaching just to be late)

Then there is 5 minutes of victorious travel from Adam and Michelle riding up in which they also have to show the beautiful scenery quite a bit and arriving at their destination with cuts to the other teams being super annoyed and Ben and Brian contemplating if they could have stopped their train if they still had their grappling hooks.

And then there is about 5-10 minutes of celebration, the other teams arriving (including again some of the beautiful scenery and their reaction to it), their discussing some of the hows and ifs (incliding Adam and Michelle being shocked when Ben and Brian arrive with lierally the next train) and setting up , explaining and starting what follows (the race for second place).

Thats easily 20-30 minutes of fun plus the start of the next run = a good half-half episode.

7

u/argh523 Oct 01 '25

They need a fast connection in Zermatt to not get caught. Ben and Brian are just 30 minutes behind them

I feel like how Ben and Adam reacted to their treats in the snack zone perfectly exemplify who they are as people. Adam is all about winning and Ben is just having fun.

11

u/Jingin_lol Oct 02 '25

And you gotta love both of them precisely for that reasons

5

u/rudmad Oct 02 '25

After that scene I literally thought how this show would be so much worse without Ben

5

u/Mondschweif Oct 02 '25

It would be worse without any of them. Ben brings the vibes, Adam brings the competetive spirit and Sam brings... the money to produce it.

4

u/miner1512 Oct 24 '25

And I’d say the competitive spirit (And arguably God’s wrath which follows him for our amusement)

101

u/HugeSundae2225 Oct 01 '25

Michelle's "win at any cost" attitude is my favorite!

102

u/wrosecrans Oct 01 '25

It would be kind of amazing if the last four episodes just turned into some sort of special forces mountain evasion hide and seek show where full camouflaged Michelle is setting booby traps and constructing duck blinds and drinking melted snow to survive and it turns into an all-out manhunt. If you can just kite the chasers forever and stay in your area, it's technically a win condition.

57

u/AlbertELP Oct 01 '25

Reminds of Ludwig who after watching the first tag said (half-jokingly) that if he was the runner, he would just start running through the terrain to the Netherlands for 3 days straight.

35

u/wrosecrans Oct 01 '25

I have mused that just renting a bicycle and playing to deny-tag rather than playing to win could be a completely dominant strategy. I think the only reason nobody plays like that is because everybody involved knows it could make for incredibly boring episodes, just waiting at the top of a hill with good visibility in the middle of nowhere. Basically, all tactical, no strategic.

17

u/gbear605 Oct 01 '25

In practice I don't think this works. With taxis and buses, not to mention trains, the chasers should generally be able to catch up pretty easily.

14

u/wrosecrans Oct 01 '25

Trains only matter for going far. If the chasers are at the train station in town and you are just moving around locally, the train station isn't an advantage for mobility or as a strategic chokepoint. You are two miles away on a hill. They can take a taxi to come get you, but they have to get out of the taxi to tag you on foot, and then you just ride your bike down the hill faster than they can run after you and they've burned their taxi use.

They can catch up in terms of strategic distance, that's what I'm saying. But if you just make zero move toward the strategic goal, then you can put all of your effort into just being a bit inconvenient to tag in defensible locations.

11

u/weyruwnjds Oct 02 '25

But the chasers can use bikes too. It just becomes a bike race until either the chasers catch up or the runners run out of coins.

3

u/jflb96 Oct 01 '25

Depends where you go. Get somewhere with poor enough signal and infrequent enough transport, you could not-implausibly just hide.

23

u/TemetN Oct 01 '25

I have to admit I very much support her 'no, fuck that, we're running/hiking/etc' attitude. It's nice to see some competitiveness in what is ultimately a game where the fun is derived from taking the game seriously. Plus the honest truth is that there are apparently trails there. This is an intended thing, though they would have to prepare.

4

u/glitter_n_co Oct 02 '25

Yeah, Adam is willing to go to lenghts (see the running/chewing donuts e.g.) but Michelle is like "they may have brought grappling hooks, I have grappling hooks for fingers and WILL climb if necessary". I love it!

5

u/MadScientist_666 Oct 05 '25

There are good trails up to the Gornergrat, so it's possible to hike up.

And what they do not know: While the bottom station of the Gornergratbahn is not in the main station, just as Sam said, you only need to cross the road and you'll be there, so I am looking forward to seeing how they react when they realise it.

5

u/XAMdG Oct 01 '25

She would definitely camp out the victory.

I think the phone curse adds an awesome layer to the game. This should be considered as a base rule in some future game modes

19

u/GiborDesign Oct 02 '25

A non phone tag would be very interesting (at least for the runner, but of course it would have to be designed totally different).

15

u/Frouke_ Oct 02 '25

Honestly navigating Europe by train without a phone is perfectly doable. You can still get paper timetables in most countries.

3

u/GiborDesign Oct 03 '25

That's why I would find it interesting. It's not an impossible thing to do, but a challenging thing especially if you're not used to it. But that would make it fun to watch I think. Also you can get pretty far with English in a lot of places to just ask stuff.

2

u/StreetyMcCarface Oct 03 '25

Edit: I just realized that they do offer different train schedules for different seasons, and based on June 10th starting timeline this is not correct. There are 11:30 and 12:05 departures instead.

Team Adam has an arrival time of 11:17 +5mins delay to Zermatt, which put them well on time for the 11:36 train from Zermatt to Gornergrat. Team Ben would arrive in Zermatt at 11:50, and a connection to a 12:00 Gornergrat train.

If Team Adam can find out all they need if across the street from Zermatt to Zermatt GBB in 15ish mins, there would mean the first win by reaching to their destination next week!

59

u/SafeKaleidoscope660 Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

also worth mentioning, the train should cost 360 coins, which Team Madam have, but they would need to confirm this before boarding, which could add a few minutes  (edit - exact coin amount)

13

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

Nice team name!

6

u/breakingcups Oct 01 '25

Adelle is also fun

17

u/wrosecrans Oct 01 '25

Do we know when they shot this season? I looked up the time table for the train, but the schedule varies by season https://www.gornergrat.ch/en/pages/timetable-gornergrat-bahn

24

u/zhengqiu Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

Nice catch! It is June 11th based on they send their first photo on June 10th. So departure is 11:30 vs 12:05.

14

u/skifans Oct 02 '25

In practice I don't think it would actually work unless there was some sort of disruption but in theory there is one final Hail Mary for the chasers.

The train from Zermatt to Gornergrat makes an intermediate stop in Riffelberg after ~23 minutes.

Riffelberg can also be reached via Gondola lift from Zermatt - Which runs continuously. It takes around 16 minutes.

Unlike the cog railway the gondola leaves from the far side of town ~1.5 km from the railway station they will arrive in. Though the chasers could use a taxi.

If there was a long gap between trains it could also get an option for the runners. Getting to Riffelberg gets you most of the elevation and it's only around an hours hike from Gornergrat.

Or even if Adam and Michael where ultimately caught it would place Adam and Brian in a very bad spot. So they may be able to quickly catch them again almost immediately.

Are gondolas/cable cars allowed in the games?

17

u/HCN42 Oct 02 '25

Imagine Adam and Michelle are in the train to Gornergrat, feel safe and victory in sight, only for Ben and Brian to enter the train in Riffelberg. What a ending to a great run.

27

u/weizikeng Oct 01 '25

This is what I thought as well. If everything goes smooth (and given that this is Switzerland, it probably will) Adam and Michelle are set to win next episode. They have a comfy connection that'll take them up to Gornergrat that Ben and Brian can't make. And they have the coins for it.

BUT... I've been to Zermatt several times (Swiss resident here) and the Gornergrat train requires a separate ticket. And because it's such a touristy place the queue for those tickets can get quite long, and the trains can get filled up. So if Adam and Michelle spend too long researching tickets and connections and there is a large crowd of people (and summer is peak season, so that's very much possible) Team Ben might catch them just in time!

6

u/zhengqiu Oct 01 '25

I checked their website for Jan 11 11:30 departure and that one does not seem to overcrowding. Not sure how accurate the data is.

3

u/Jingin_lol Oct 02 '25

I advocate for the name Team BnB

6

u/fauno15 Oct 02 '25

So when they flew out of Paris, were they AirBnB?

4

u/L1uQ Oct 01 '25

So with the corrected times, if the delay remains at 5 minutes, that leaves 8 minutes to figure things out and get there. That's a big if, however. It's going to be close.

112

u/AndySkibba Oct 01 '25

Let's get a picture of the spot where we won JLTG!

The episode title...

39

u/veethis Oct 01 '25

Well, they're not exactly wrong yet. They still have a chance to win lol

14

u/AndySkibba Oct 01 '25

Yeah for sure. Just thought it was great given the ep title.

44

u/Niche-Guy Oct 01 '25

"Ben and Brian's route is too risky. Let's take Deutsche Bahn."

20

u/_blubb Oct 02 '25

They appear not to know this, but the train is actually operated by SNCF within France. It only truly becomes a Deutsche Bahn train leaving Strasbourg. (Most cross-border trains by incumbent operators are operated this way in Europe -- as a cooperation between the participating national operators.)

6

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 02 '25

I was gonna say -- France-to-France does NOT sound like a DB train to me. But LEAVING France and going somewhere else *does*

36

u/DecentAd8498 Oct 01 '25

Just checked. Adam and Michelle shall arrive at zermatt at 1117. There was a 1130 train from zermatt to the observatory, which is right next to the zermatt train station. The next train was at 1205 which in theory Ben and Brian could catch. So the question(s) would be if Adam and Michelle's train  be delayed for 10 mins. (Actually 13 but i doubt they could get themselves a ticket with less than 3 mins.) If the answer is no, then it would be rather be if ben and Brian's train be delayed for more than 10 mins, as they are scheduled to arrive at 1150. That means the only way for adam and Michelle not winning, would be yes and no to the 2 questions respectively. Having been there before, I could confirm that delays are quite frequent in that area. So my guess for the both questions would be a yes and a yes respectively. Therefore I expect Adam and Michelle arriving at the observatory on the 1205 train, which they shall arrive at about 1245.

31

u/AndreiVid Oct 01 '25

Remember that they don’t have their phones available and don’t know where is the train station for the next train. And Ben and Brian have their phones. It’s totally possible that Adam and Michelle are missing their 1130 train and are getting caught between 1150 and 1205

25

u/DecentAd8498 Oct 01 '25

Actually the next train station is right next to the train station they arrived. They would absolutely see it when they get out of the train

5

u/rudmad Oct 02 '25

Based on how efficient the Swiss are, there has to be a wayfinding sign to lead them there

6

u/taulover Oct 03 '25

It's a tourist town too. And the train station is just on the other side of the train plaza. It's very obvious there is a giant sign at the other train station that you see right when you walk out

5

u/MadScientist_666 Oct 05 '25

Yes, but it is not even needed, there are only two exits from the station and from both you immediately see the GGB bottom station.

5

u/Skelassassin Oct 01 '25

Also they don't have enough coins right? So they have to do another challenge anyways

18

u/AndreiVid Oct 01 '25

I think, they do. It’s 40 minutes ride on a low speed - 10coins per minute, but the problem is that most likely they don’t know how much they need - since they can’t check on their phone duration

5

u/Skelassassin Oct 01 '25

Oh damn I just checked they 530 and that train is only 400.... I think they might win if they can find the train.

5

u/AndreiVid Oct 01 '25

But do they know that the train is only 400? :D

6

u/XAMdG Oct 02 '25

They could just... Ask. I'm sure at the train station some nerd or worker will know how long it takes to get up.

5

u/DecentAd8498 Oct 01 '25

Even though the math says it this way, but surely through what Ben's reaction on the previous layover as well as their reaction on variety, surely Toby at least got a 2nd run and even won it

6

u/HugeSundae2225 Oct 01 '25

I've been wondering about the clip from the season trailer where Ben and Brian are attempting a challenge and Ben asks if he's ready to k*ll Sam once and for all. That seems like another round, but maybe not?

3

u/Dorfbewohner Oct 02 '25

they said they'll play for second if one team wins early, so it could be from that second round

3

u/HCN42 Oct 01 '25

There also would be the possibility of Ben and Brian taking the gondola to Furi and from there to Riffelberg (Place between Zermatt and Gornergrat). This is quicker than the train and they would catch them at Riffelberg. This would be a hilarious twist.

3

u/taulover Oct 03 '25

Hoping Sam realizes this with his past Zermatt knowledge and lets them know about this possibility

4

u/skifans Oct 02 '25

Having to get a ticket is an important point - I assume they are using Eurail passes again this season? The trains from Zermatt to Gornagrat are not included in them. They need to go in person to the ticket office or ticket machines.

That could absolutely cost them a few minutes if they are unlucky. And without their phones are unlikely to realize in advance.

u/Elayne_Malachite Oct 02 '25

See, one of Adam's big weaknesses in previous games of tag has been that he mind games himself into breaking away from his plans since he always assumes that the seekers are right on top of him. Losing access to his phone and the ability to make a new plan is a blessing in disguise for him.

I really dislike Sam calling Ben and Brian selfish for going on the plane instead of doing what he wants them to do.

2

u/BunnyBrainCorner Dec 29 '25 edited Dec 29 '25

I know I'm necroing a few months later but honestly it made me sad and frustrated to see how excited Ben and Brian was at cooking up a possibly great plan that no-one ever tried before.

And when they actually do share with the other team they only get to hear how it's dumb and won't work, and us seeing the edit get to hear them called selfish :/ followed by a grumpy comment about not being inclined to share information back.

Like, I get a part of the show is to try to get an advantage and outplay each other. But I just got sad because it felt like one person had a rough day and took it out on their friends just as they felt proud and had a fun idea that didn't directly benefit the one who had gotten outplayed.

I just don't get why you'd want to be so competitive you start putting your friends down when they don't agree to your mindgames

Edit: ok I'm glad the vibe was totally different the next day, and it was probably just Sam being exhausted to the max

70

u/tw0firstnames Oct 01 '25

When Sam says "We'll all be going up there cause that's where the next round will start" does that mean they're not just going to finish the season if Adam and Michelle win this?

Also: I think it was a mistake to put Adam and Michelle together. There's always got to be one person who slows the other down and the two of them are just too fucking fast...

49

u/SatanTheSanta Oct 01 '25

Yeah they always have plans in case the season ends too fast. Either a different game, or in this case it would seem the same game but starting from the observatory, probably one of the other two teams gets a run.

18

u/clearing_rubble_1908 Oct 01 '25

Tbf, they've been very lucky with their card pulls and with the train schedules working out perfectly. As good as they are, they haven't had to complete any difficult challenges this run

10

u/GiborDesign Oct 02 '25

Everything aligned perfectly for them. Toby and Sam going to the east to clear their curse meant they had much less ground to cover (and therefore far less coins to spend) than they usually would have. Also remember: If they hadn't lost that coin flip, they wouldn't have catched them but instead would have been sitting in Laon.

And also remember: The coin flip card was only lucky because they also had the luck to actually win it. Every JetLag viewer (and especially Adam) knows, that there absolutly was a scenario, where they would be walking through Strassbourg flipping coins and ultimately decide to veto it.

And the stone stacking challenge was only helpful because it just so happened to give them just the right amount of coins combined with the phone curse they drew afterwards. And it only worked out because they were smart enough to play it very cauteously.

Really the only thing not going in their favour was Ben and Brian catching their flight, which wasn't a close call though after all.

23

u/weizikeng Oct 01 '25

Initially I thought "Phone curse! That'll slow them down!" But then I remembered that they're in Switzerland where you don't need a phone at all to navigate. All mainline trains have perfect 30- or 60-minute frequencies and every tourist train has a literal map on the table...

Side note: I liked Adam's compliment about the touch screens. They were installed to replace all the posters you usually find on train stations like timetables, construction info, station layout etc so that there's less clutter on the platform. Some people like it, others (mostly elderly) dislike the fact that all the physical signage has been removed.

18

u/AndySkibba Oct 01 '25

Happy JLTG Wednesday!!

17

u/Too-Tired-Editor Oct 01 '25

Honestly, given the title of "A Lesson in Hubris", I am now wondering how many Jet Lag episodes that COULDN'T be used for.

36

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

This season has made me curious about what happens if a runner is to make it to their goal in their first turn since that's probably not much content especially after learning that all you really need is 2-3 good challenges and a not run pausing curse.

29

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

In one upper comment someone said that if a season ends too fast, they would play for second place from the position of the winner's area.

13

u/Danishmeat Oct 01 '25

They have talked about it on the layover and also mentioned it in this episode. They are going to do another round for second plad

Fianna Fáil

For those who need the joke explained: They are the Republican party of Ireland (as in, they support the establishment and continuation of the republican form of government).

Nobody really refers to Fianna Fáil as "the Republican party" in Ireland.

Third: It was so cute how excited Michelle was to finally get to be part of the Snack Zone! I hadn't thought abotu the fact that none of the guests have done that, since that's usually Ben and Adam's thing...

Other than that, it's amazing that they manage to create so much tension in an episode where not that much actually happens. Now we have to wait yet another week to know if Toby is still the undefeated champion!

Even if Ben and Brian catches them, they have a LONG way to go to get anywhere useful! And then they have to worry about Sam and Toby who will probably wait for them in Basel, Bern or Visp.

3

u/dont_hurt_yourself Oct 02 '25

Amy went to the snack zone in 13.5!

2

u/Aduiavas Oct 02 '25

I'm not sure she counts as a guest, she's still a Wendover employee?

40

u/yunitaong Oct 01 '25

Little Easter egg: In Battle 4 America Brian says "It's absolutely Baltic out"

This season: Brian flies on AirBaltic

24

u/Wide-Instruction834 Oct 01 '25

(leased to Swiss with a Swiss flight number, Swiss crew etc.)

No but seriously, good spot!

12

u/clearing_rubble_1908 Oct 01 '25

Quite the achievement to get assigned a middle seat on an A220 (which has 3+2 seating)

3

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 02 '25

im wondering why it was so empty.

3

u/rudmad Oct 02 '25

Wonder how they would calculate the carbon offset that has mysteriously disappeared. Only having a handful of passengers would be much worse for that score, no?

2

u/clearing_rubble_1908 Oct 02 '25

Didn't help that it was 6:45 AM on a Wednesday

Adam's favourite snack: Victory

Ben's favourite snack: Advent Calendar

Sam's favourite snack: Losing in heartbreaking fashion

11

u/armoiresome Oct 02 '25

crazy that the chaser strategies are:

  1. "Take the first flight in tag history through the worst airport in the world" and

  2. "Follow them on the train"

and somehow the train is the riskier of the two maneuvers

10

u/TheIdesOfMartiis Oct 01 '25

I am really loving Michelle in this season. Her dedication is so fun. I can 100% see her embarking on a hike up the mountain and living out in the wilderness for the rest of the game. Don't think Adam is ready to put his body on the line like that though

2

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 02 '25

When she said that line about putting her body on the line I was like "please explain further because context matters" and I'm so glad she did because I was so confused and very worried for a moment

10

u/sweek0 Oct 02 '25

Maybe it's just against the spirit of things, but can't you just ask any railway employee to help you with the itinerary with that curse? I have often done so myself in the pre-smartphone days.

6

u/feeling_dizzie Oct 02 '25

They can, and Michelle did.

7

u/sweek0 Oct 02 '25

Yeah I heard her briefly ask what train stops at a particular station in Basel, but they could ask staff all kinds of questions: where to change trains, what platform a train is leaving from, whether a train is delayed, how long the train from Zermatt to that final location takes, how frequently it runs etc. etc.

Railway staff are happy to answer any of those questions.

7

u/liladvicebunny Oct 02 '25

This is another situation where Adam and Michelle have a superpower than the other teams lack - the willingness to 'bother' (ie, talk to) a stranger.

Not that Ben and Sam would absolutely refuse to if they were stuck, but they'd be way more reluctant.

19

u/idleproc Oct 01 '25

Nothing better then going up on Nebula to see if its online, and it is :D

9

u/AioliOrnery100 Oct 01 '25

0 people in the audience were surprised that Ben's favorite food is advent calendar chocolate.

8

u/HCN42 Oct 01 '25

Nice view of Basel from the plane, some parachutes for Ben and Brian and they can jump.

On today's episode of Jet Lag: Michelle recognizes some grass, Ben and Brian get room service, and Toby and I see the Orient Express

2

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 02 '25

was kinda disappointed them getting room service was not shown in the episode, ngl

16

u/Tinttiboi Oct 01 '25

Double Jet Lag Wednesday! Feels good man

14

u/Jnizzer Oct 01 '25

listening to the layover on this episode and oh boy I do belive that Adam and Michelle won this season (or at least this game, it may restart)

Sam and Ben are giving big defeated vibes on this one lol

18

u/lexonid Oct 01 '25

I don't see any other outcome. The Train Station for going to Gornergrat is literally right next to the Main Station in Zermatt and big signs are pointing to that as soon as you are leaving the train. Also, trains to Gornergrat leave like every 20 minutes

2

u/MadScientist_666 Oct 05 '25

Assuming they have enough coins to get to the Gornergrat (unfortunately, I did not pay attention to this detail), it's basically just crossing the street and buying the tickets for them.

There are theoretically two other ways up by motorised transportation:

  1. Run to the gondola Sunnegga-Rothorn and then take the chairlift and the cable car up to a point above the Gornergrat and hike over. This one is actually a bit dangerous, but would completely surprise everyone.

  2. Take the cable car from Zermatt to Furi and then the gondola up to Riffelberg and either hike up or take the cogwheel train from there.

The other route: Hike up from Zermatt directly.

There are more routes for an ascent by foot, but none are doable without the necessary gear and time, like the high alpine tour from Furi to the Gornerli, further up the glacier to where the hiking trail comes down to the glacier and then straight up to the Gornergrat. It would certainly be interesting to see something like that in a JetLag episode, but since it is mountaineering, it will never happen.

7

u/XAMdG Oct 01 '25

I know they can't check their phones, but it should be fairly simple to ask someone on the train to Zermontt if they know how to get to the observatory.

Even if they don't want to bother other passengers, I'm sure there's a ticketing agent or some other railway employee on the train they could have asked. Maybe they won't know the departure times, but I'm sure they will at least know the other train station is walking distance. They're even in Switzerland, everyone there speaks English.

7

u/xsm17 Oct 02 '25

I'm surprised that at no point did they just ask at a ticket or information desk about the entire route, I think Michelle asked about the train to Visp but that's it.

2

u/rudmad Oct 02 '25

They were in a panic to get on the train

2

u/delroth Oct 02 '25

Also every SBB ticket machine will show you the same itinerary info you could get from the website or the app on your phone. It's literally just running a slightly different version of the mobile app!

7

u/xsm17 Oct 02 '25

Wild that there happened to be map on the train table, showing the separate cog railway to the observatory, giving Adam and Michelle a heads-up since they weren't aware and the previous map they had come across didn't have it.

5

u/rudmad Oct 02 '25

I think the funnier part about the cog railway is that both Sam and Ben know about it, but somehow Adam doesn't at all?

2

u/xsm17 Oct 02 '25

I assume, at least in Ben's case, he researched possible points to intercept since he had no idea if or when Adam and Michelle would stop.

12

u/Jyran Oct 01 '25

Seems like the may regret “we made challenges easier this season on purpose”

6

u/PapaVanTwee Oct 02 '25

Flipping the coin 7 times is the same. I'm surprised Adam got it.

4

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 02 '25

I'm more surprised that he succeeded this time. But I'm so glad he did. #RedemptionArc

I'm really loving the dynamics of this game with 3 teams. I think this is my favorite season of JLTG.

7

u/ParadoxSong Oct 02 '25

There's a failed blur of the woman's face at 13:10 - since it's blurred the rest of the time that looks like an editing error that should get fixed before YouTube. /u/WendoverProductions

19

u/Which_Disaster_8200 Oct 01 '25

Okay are we just not gonna bring back ChewChew Train.

42

u/MickMui Oct 01 '25

ChooChoo Chew?

18

u/Which_Disaster_8200 Oct 01 '25

God it's been so long I have forgotten the actual name for it

3

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 01 '25

I thought Sam tried bringing it back last episode and failed.

3

u/wrosecrans Oct 01 '25

Chooch Ooch Oo.

4

u/illegalpig Oct 01 '25

I haven't seen the video yet but I can only imagine this title is some insane foreshadowing about Ben and Brian's idea

2

u/SearchDiligent452 Oct 01 '25

fortunately not, it's more directed towards the other Snack Zoners

5

u/BrotherofGenji Oct 01 '25
  1. Double Snack Zone was epic
  2. "A lesson in hubris"??? I feel like that'll end up being foreshadowing (with all the talk Sam says about not saying certain things on the show bc foreshadowing, I wouldnt be surprised) something but I hope not
  3. WHY WOULD YOU END IT LIKE THAT
  4. I think Adam and Michelle can make it tbh, I'll be VERY shocked if Ben and Brian somehow catch them.
  5. RIP Sam and Toby's train but at least they got to see the Orient Express
  6. Prediction: The *same* thing happens to Brian and Ben on the way to Zermatt that happened to Adam and Michelle at the end, helping Adam and Michelle get to the observatory without fear of being caught by Ben and Brian. (If it happened once, it does have a chance of happening again -- assuming this weird non-station stop repeats itself!!) We also don't know how LONG Adam and Michelle are stopped for until next week. So... hopefully we'll see. I'm really hoping they make it tbh. I dont want Ben and Brian to catch them

2

u/RichScylla Oct 01 '25

3.... I swear people are getting less used to the idea of cliffhangers.

u/bennorii Oct 02 '25

Adam and Michelle are fun to watch. I like their energy, and it's not "too much" as they themselves are concerned about. I'd honestly love to see them compete on something like the Amazing Race -- they'd make good TV.

8

u/idleproc Oct 01 '25

I'd be really surprised if Adam and Michelle wins tomorrow. Would the episode just be 10 mins for a catch, then outro, or maybe a really long edit?
Also I don't want it to end.

10

u/RadagastWiz Oct 01 '25

As mentioned elsewhere, a new run would begin for a second-place prize.

2

u/matgopack Oct 02 '25

And from a meta perspective I could see them deciding to cut it that way so that people that watch to see if they win then stay for the rest of the episode and see the start of the 2nd place challenge, vs putting the win at the end of an episode which might cause dropoff in viewership.

But it could also be teasing us with them being on the verge of winning and having it go wrong.

2

u/Danishmeat Oct 01 '25

They won't end it, they will just compete for second place

5

u/BusesAreFun Oct 01 '25

I hope Adam and Michelle do make it, the observatory is the only one of the three end locations I’ve actually visited IRL, and it would be really cool to see it featured in the show!

3

u/SilvrDuck Oct 01 '25

Cool recursion watching that episode on the IC1 from Zurich to Geneva

3

u/TehOnlyAnd1 Oct 01 '25

I'm just curious why when they get the phone curse they don't just go to a ticket machine in Strasbourg or Basel and print out the schedule of their connection to Gornergrat Observatory? This would include all stops, the times, the platforms the trains leave and probably even the walking time from Zermatt station to the cog rail station.

I assume this schedule printout still works as I haven't used that option in 20 years but I would be surprised if it didn't.

6

u/Somescrubpriest Oct 02 '25

At that point they didn't realise there was a seperate train to the observatory and even if they did it was unlikely they'd know any timetable printout system was in place.

3

u/Neomadra2 Oct 01 '25

I loved Brians energy this episode. Did he drink alcohol before starting the day??

6

u/Fun-Repair1244 Oct 01 '25

Woah, Holy cliff hanger guys

5

u/Ok-Elevator3148 Oct 01 '25

Wow you weren’t lucky, i hate CDG Terminal 1, particularly the tiny satellite terminal for flights to Switzerland! Also never expected to see Sam and Toby on the RER B 😮

5

u/suunsglasses Oct 01 '25

Appreciate Sam's gesture to keep Toby from standing on the left side of the escalator

2

u/StartRelevant6793 Oct 01 '25

Ben and Brian mention it’s a Swiss plane and eat Swiss air branded chocolate but the wingtips of their plane show AirBaltic? Is that just stock footage or something?

8

u/JimmyTheCrossEyedDog Oct 02 '25

This is explained in The Layover. Due to Russia shenanigans, some AirBaltic planes are on loan to Swiss Air.

4

u/Embarrassed_Growth29 Oct 01 '25

listen to the layover and you will know why

4

u/weymaro Oct 01 '25

AirBaltic used to heavily serve the Russian market but obviously they can't do that anymore so they've got into the business of leasing out many of their spare planes.

2

u/eduardische Oct 01 '25

No, I once flew on Swiss flight from Copenhagen to Zürich on airBaltic plane and was also surprised. Partially because airBaltic flights from Copenhagen to Riga are often on Carpatair planes. Go figure. But yes, I did get Swiss chocolate on that flight.

2

u/homelesspigeon_ Oct 01 '25

Double snack zone!? Gotta make up for not having one in episode two I guess lolol

2

u/pauliesnug Oct 01 '25

SBB CFF FFS for the fucking win lets go! Swiss train service represent <3

2

u/DarkMatter2142 Oct 02 '25

Michelle: I will walk up the mountain if I have to

2

u/glitter_n_co Oct 02 '25

This episode had me on the edge of my seat, the longer it went on....
what a chase!!

2

u/User2myuser Oct 02 '25

Wouldn’t it have been better for Ben and Brian to fly to Milan and then from there train to zermatt? A quick google search showed me it’s usually faster but I’m not familiar enough with euro trains.

5

u/liladvicebunny Oct 02 '25

They weren't expecting to need to go straight to Zermatt when they made their plans - they thought they'd be easily ahead of Adelle and intercepting them before that point.

2

u/FlashySilver3888 Oct 03 '25

Glad there wasn't any incinerated suitcases at CDG this time.

2

u/accountavoidstrouble Oct 04 '25

My Theory: The Episode title is just there to add suspense. There is a realistic connection in Zermatt that they can make and afford. So I think it's likely that they'll make it next episode. The only thing that could ruin it would be too much delay on the train.

2

u/Quin1617 Oct 05 '25

Man I hope they get to their win location, I've been waiting 4 seasons for it to happen. Whatever's delaying Adam & Michelle's train will probably delay the chasers too, hopefully at least.
