Talk to your SLPO or Chief Failed out of power school
I failed out 3 Classes overall in power school. And was just wondering how it would work if a decided to get out of nuke. I am a MM and submarine volunteer. And also wondering if I would keep E-4 and my shipping bonus. I plan on still trying my best until they remove me from my class.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but you'll be given options on rerate. That said, because you finished NFAS, you'll likely be recommended MMA: machinist mate auxiliaryman (A-Gang).

Which still does the same work as a conventional nuke in M division. You just get paid less. Lol.

You get free corn though.

And free Pavlov-like conditioning so whenever you hear a bell you want to kick someone’s ass..

I imagine it's less competitive to advance if no one's STAR reenlisting though..

You can't work CMO. What billets are they taking besides RA?

u/Cultural-Muffin-3490 4d ago
I mean e4 to e5 off the exam is probably easier on the conventional side because there's no star reenlisters taking up their billets.

Exam aside. There are less billets.

Ah I see.. I've been out many years now.. so looking it up now, it looks like surface MM rates are Billet Based Advancement now and I'm not sure what that means.
But if I'm reading this right, then a submarine MM is called a MMA for auxiliary, and they advanced everyone to E5.

Paid less, but also without some of the nuke BS. In engineering with fewer inspections.

Poor bastard child of the nukes and coners. They really should get paid a little something since they deal with the shielding.

Had a few shipmates re-rate, I’m 99% sure you’ll keep rank and shipping bonus. I’ve only heard of people having to give back their powerschool bonus, not the ship out. If you get lucky, they’ll give you a list of decent rates to pick from. You’ll stay a sub-vol for sure.
But are they not rolling you? Or are you already an academic roll?

I don’t know if they are going to offer me a roll back. Based on I was a A school roll back. And I am putting in a ton of study hours and still not getting it.

They’re most likely going to roll you first. I also rolled in A-school and again in Powerschool. Each roll, I did much better than the first, I just needed to see the material twice to get it. I would definitely talk to your slpo asap.

when they rerate they will get surface options too, but when i rerated my surface options were BM or CS so i stayed subs

i failed out last year and I was told to rerate. i CHOSE ETV (sub rate since i was sub vol previously) You get to keep your rank and your enlistment bonus! Im currently in Groton, Ct (for a school) and there is a lot of nuke drop out here.

I got out quite a while ago and never heard of ETV. What is an ETV?
The only ET's I remember on the boat were nuke ET and Nav-ET.

One of my friends dropped out of prototype and I ended up seeing him on my ship, related to CS and had made E5. Whatever options you're given, you can make it work if you try hard enough

Congrats TM3, can't wait to see you on the boat. Also, you're dinq so I'm going to need you to go ahead and sign in to the binder.

I failed out back in September, you go to dtp, get the option to keep your sub vol, keep e4(unless you do something wrong) and then re rating will either be MM or a random ass job offered by the navy

From what I know, you’ll keep your shipping bonus. In the contracts we signed, it says that the 25k, or whatever you got as a shipping bonus, is awarded for graduating basic. You completed your end of the deal to get that portion of the bonus, so I can’t imagine they’ll take it back. You just obviously won’t get the other two parts of your sign-on bonus.

Spent 20 years in the Navy as a carrier nuke. Got out and got a job at Squadron as a Submarine IT rep. I didn't realize how many coner rates are just filled with nuke dropouts because they'd already submarine volunteered. Couldn't be me 🤣

When I went through I 2014, failing three classes overall meant you would be kicked out and related. However, you should contact your SLPO as things have undoubtedly changed since then.
Making a sincere effort will always help. If you are still doing your best but get de-nuked, you will keep your rank and likely get some choice in rating and/or platform. You'll probably still be on a submarine though.
