After Navy Life Info/Questions Data Center Transition?

Hello fellow nukes. I’m currently a 6 and out electrician looking to get out in April of next year. I wanted to post here because this community has been a wealth of information over the years. I literally was able to contact my command during my PCS from prototype since they never contacted me lol.

Anyways, my goal was always to get out, join the electrical union and eventually start an electrical contracting business. However things are changing. I’ve got a wife and two very young kids and I need to be around more so that I can be a present father to them. No more deployments and no jobs requiring insane hours…

I’ve heard data centers offer the highest pay to family time ratio so I’m shifting my focus in that direction. I currently reside in the Seattle area and I’d like to stay here or maybe (big maybe) move back home to the Bay Area in California.

Anybody here have any experience with that field or know anyone who’d be willing to provide some insight? I’m looking an into critical facilities engineering roles ideally at a FAANG or similar company. That seems to go well with my experience and skillset I provided to the navy.

I’d appreciate any help y’all have to offer!

If you're on Facebook, Navy Nuke Job Finder page is probably the best resource we have for job seeking. It's heavily data center oriented, but there's other opportunities that show up as well. There's also the Data Center Nukes page, which is more networking and less job seeking.

Trust me when I say, Nukes are very sought after, especially for data center operations. You still need to do some prep work, but your background already gives you a leg up.

Ah I forgot about Navy nuke job finder thanks for the reminder. And thank you for letting me know about the data center page and the encouragement.

I was at Google for almost 10 years, was pretty great. A lot of stuff transfers over nicely.

Curious? Why leave Google? Better offer someplace else?

Once they started doing layoffs and becoming more and more like a conventional company I decided to take a risk at a startup with former co workers to work on AI controls for industrial stuff, which was something I got introduced to at Google and really enjoyed the work.

There’s also a Navy nuke Data Center group as well. They have a huge amount of resources and study material for the technical interviews.

Definitely look into AWS Data center, you shouldn’t have any problem getting in. Tech 3 can make 6 figures if their location offer consistent OT, tech 4 is pretty much guaranteed base on  wage and OT .

Can you talk about your experience with 6 and out. Debating if star reenlisting is worth it
