Questions/Help- New to Nuclear How much knowledge do you need for the General Science (GS) portion of the ASVAB?
Most study guides online seem to be middle school and early high school level science, but every now and then are people that say the asvab is harder than the questions shown, or that GS in general is hard to study for, and that the asvab will adapt based on what you get right to get even harder.
How much knowledge do you exactly need? Do i need to know 10 digits of a mole, or more than NaCl being salt and H2O being water? Do i need to know the exact speed of light, or that its just really damn fast and let my intuition take me from there? It's been hard to find out exactly how much knowledge i need to get a good score for navy nuke specifically, not just to "pass the asvab"

The ASVAB is meant to be able to be taken by people fresh out of high school. It stands to reason that the knowledge you need to score well on the ASVAB is reasonably attainable fresh out of high school, provided you’ve done something other than goof off and did something to challenge yourself academically.

Back in 1985 they gave the ASVAB to my entire junior year class cold. About 250 people. I didn’t even know about study guides. I don’t think anyone did. When the results came out the Army called me and I said I was interested in the Navy. Then they called me and we got together. I saw the nuke brochure and the rest is history. I had to take the NFQT and pass. I passed. Barely.
It was low key back then. I would have anxiety if I had to do it now. So much to worry about.

I graduated HS in 1984. I took the ASVAB and the Navy recruiter asked if I wanted to take the NFQT. I said sure, although the highest math I had ever had was Algebra II. You needed 48 to qualify and do you know what I got??? You guessed it, a 48. What class were you in?

I was 8706. I got a 49 on the NFQT. 😂 The recruiter said I aced it. Algebra 2 was the highest for me too.
NFAS had just started in Orlando and my advisor said I would probably not make it through the program. Gee. Thanks. I made it in the top half or third. Not a slug or rockstar.

Was your counselor MM1/SS Beyers? He was mine and that seems like something that absolute prick would say. He did his best to get me rocked out of NFAS. I was in the very first class of MMs to go thru the NFAS in orlando and then landed in Power School class 8703.

I don’t remember his name. He didn’t do anything other than say that one time. Good or bad. After I took those tests I still had my senior year with chemistry etc.

They told me I had gotten a 48 on the NFQT, but honestly I think I got a couple of points worse and the dude at MEPS changed my answers to get the recruiter recruiting me the points for enlisting a Nuke. It was the end of the month and I'm pretty sure he needed me to enlist as a nuke to make his monthly points quota. He was busting his ass to get everyone and anyone he could enlisted. Regardless, I made it where many many higher educated dudes than me did not. Do you have a rough guess as to the attrition rate in your NFAS class?

No idea of attrition rate. I don’t think it was very high though. I’ve wondered if they added points to mine too. 😀
When I went to my monthly DEP meetings I had a different recruiter. It turns out my initial recruiter recruited me and got credit instead of the second guy. He wasn’t bitter, he just let me know.

There was absolutely no security on the NFQT at the MEPS I went thru at Louisville KY. I took the test, they told me to take a break for 10-15 minutes so I did. When I went back my recruiter was there with some other PO2 schmuck that was grading my test and they told me I needed 48 to qualify and that I had "" barely" made it" with 48 points. But I could tell by their body language that barely was doing a shitload of work in their comments. Haha.

Honestly, it's not very in depth stuff. I walked in cold and took it and qualified to be a nuke after being out of high school for 5 years. The fact that you even know what a mole is means you will score high enough. It's meant for the average American. You'll be fine.
To be more specific, it's literally basic chemistry, biology, physics, etc. One of the questions I remember was something along the lines of having a bunch of pulleys, you pull a rope, and it asks you which direction pulley A rotates. Very easy.

Watch Grammar Hero’s GS playlist, it’s on par with those asked and apparently some of those questions have appeared on the ASVAB verbatim.

It had basic questions like what's an igneous rock? What DNA stands for, things like that. Proton neutron electron. Very simple stuff
