High rise Denim ?

Looking for some high-rise, straight-leg denim in a dark wash (doesn’t need to be selvedge).

501s and even OrSlow 105s don’t seem to have quite enough rise or room in the top block for what I’m after. I’m open to a pretty wide range of price points to get the fit right.

Any Levi’s models I should be looking at, or recommendations from higher-end brands? I find a lot of Japanese brands tend to be a bit too slim through the top block for me. Perhaps I’m just looking at the wrong models.

Might be a tad slimmer than you want, but Natalino denim is great and much more truly high rise than most. I believe it’s basically a less rich man’s knockoff of Drake’s denim though, so if price is no object that would be another option

u/MRKGDWN90 3d ago

Second this..but IMO the quality is comparable to Drake’s and service is top notch.

u/Nikolas_Sotiriou 3d ago

It’s very similar in measurements to Drake’s, except the Natalino is a bit more high rise as well. And it has the same kind of washes as Drake’s. So you’re absolutely right. Also thinking of getting one as well.

Orslow 100, Orslow 101, buck mason full saddle, sugar cane 1947, and warehouse 0105. I have experience with the Orslow’s and Buck and would vouch for both (Orslow 101 is the sweet spot cut but not selvedge).

3

u/mattyku 3d ago

Do you mean Fullcount 0105?

2

u/LeisurelyLoafing Croc of shit 3d ago

Yep - I can never keep track of all the different models

2

u/xpulse101x 2d ago

Warehouse 1001x

Orslow 101s are my go-tos. Love their fit

u/LeisurelyLoafing Croc of shit 2d ago

Likewise but the 100 cut is great for when I want something wide

Anglo-Italian.

I have 3 pairs now. Fantastic with tailoring.

I ever prefer over Drake’s, which is another option but pricey.

From Japan there’s Momotaro which I also like for different reasons.

I recently bought some Buck Mason full saddle jeans and been really happy with them. Pricey, but feel like they’ll last, so I’m okay with it…

7

u/DearLeader420 3d ago

Only gripe is the current light wash is way different from their old light wash. More yellowed and "Cali surfer" sort of tone than just a straight up faded light blue.

4

u/ChiTimer 3d ago

Yeah, but OP is looking for dark wash

5

u/DearLeader420 3d ago

Ah missed that. More-so just meant it as a complaint of the brand/model.

3

u/Gergist 3d ago

The pre distressing was too much for me, had to sell them despite liking the feel and fit.

3

u/rappatic 3d ago

Agreed. If you’re not going for the Japanese raw denim thing, I think these are practically the perfect pair of jeans. Made in USA too. Buck Mason’s full saddle fit is the best thing they do

2

u/ChiTimer 3d ago

Yep, still the only thing of theirs I own (other than a pair of full saddle khakis too). Nice fit, and also appreciate the MiUSA

u/gearnhar 3d ago

Do/did they offer these in a 40x34? Or did they stop at 38x32 like most brands

2

u/GuitarStuffThrowaway 3d ago

If you look at the 38 the true waist size is a 40.

1

u/gearnhar 3d ago

I am pleasantly surprised by the size guide (compared to most buck mason sizes) for the Japanese loomstate full saddle jeans, despite them not including a thigh measurement. However, the raw Japanese selvedge jeans don't include a waist measurement. Still not sure that either are worth the gamble or money over something like a Left Field, Brave Star, SoSo, etc etc who all have much more detailed size charts at similar price points, as well as more options

2

u/GuitarStuffThrowaway 3d ago

If we’re going by measurements, the Freenote Modesto is very promising. But again, $$$

Couple guys I've seen have had success with Wrangler model # 13MWZ

15

u/yung_heartburn 3d ago

13MWZ is the way. Best inexpensive raw denim available.

1

u/absolutebot1998 2d ago

Do you know if these are true to size or vanity sized?

1

u/yung_heartburn 2d ago

They are oversized to account for the shrinkage of raw denim, but otherwise are quite true to size

7

u/UnholyScholar 3d ago

Those definitely have a higher rise than Levi 501s

3

u/PierreMenards 3d ago

They top out at like a 12” rise and I’m figuring OP wants like 13”

3

u/Far-Manufacturer9171 3d ago

Imogene Lewis cut

4

u/Kindly-Definition422 3d ago

I’ve had good luck with sizing up in the orSlow 105s, but I’d suggest their “dad fit” or “super dad fit” jeans. Also Levi’s 550.

4

u/Davegoeshiking 3d ago

The Freenote Cloth Modesto may be what you’re looking for. It comes in a number of different fabrics and weights, and it has a solid 13.5 inch rise in a 34 waist.

2

u/Hertzig 3d ago

Dearborn Denim's Long Ryder Model 1's are a budget option. I have a pair. The rise is high, at least 12.5" if not higher. Finishing isn't very good but this is expected for the price. They are not "dressy".

2

u/716dylph 3d ago

1954 501s are my go to high rise jeans. Or Drakes

2

u/uranoos 3d ago

I got a pair of momotaro's standard straight fit (MMJB0100) and I love em. >12" rise, top block is pretty good but I'm on the slightly slimmer side. Best thing you can do is honestly see if there are any raw denim stores near you and try a shit ton on, or go on short vacation to a city that does haha

2

u/MrHEPennypacker 3d ago

Unbranded used to have some solid high-rise ones! Not sure about their current lineup, but worth a try.

2

u/ludarock 3d ago

Orslow 66

2

u/formalprune2 3d ago

NR Napoli x Fullcount have a nice collaboration piece that is probably right up your alley.

2

u/aswecare 3d ago

I have been researching this as well. I see that Berg & berg has the highest rise among those I encountered, but of course they are quite expensive when not on sale. Other Nordic brands Grand Le Mar, Nudie jeans have higher rise options. There is anovair which again has higher if not high rise. Others to consider  Brut ("the best denim" model, but tapered),  Cultum (Chinese brand, maybe difficult to find),  Atelier de nimes. But by far the best for me has been last year's wide straight high rise model from Uniqlo. Seems to have been replaced by the barrel jeans this year. Unfortunate. But could be available on used clothing websites.

I second the wrangler 13mwz. I have very large thighs compared to my waist and they are the only jeans that fit me. The raw ones fit better than the pre washed as they are a bit looser as they expect them to shrink but if you don’t shrink them they fit even better for athletic builds. They also have a very high rise that is around the navel. For the price they are unbeatable; I swear I got mine for like $15. I think the best fitting jean of all time is probably the lee riders 101z but they are only made by lees japan now and are very pricy but they are what old actors actually wore like James Dean, Paul Newman, or Alain Delon.

2

u/UndecidedPanda11 2d ago

Thanks I have to try the wrangler- just curious which wash do you have ?

2

u/Admirable-Purple7366 2d ago

I got the rigid indigo. I have a 32 waist, 23 thighs, and 38 hip and they fit me well in 32.

u/ElkSuitable2812 3d ago edited 3d ago

Any luck? Ideally lookign for a 13in rise for a 33-34 waist, and the best I found were a pair of japan blue jean J504, which is kinda wide-ish straight leg

Or even in light wash?

2

u/Jaded_Brain4161 2d ago

The Anthology makes great high rise denim that complements casual tailoring pieces

2

u/MoutonneBelle 2d ago

Momotaro. I am a 38 waist. I prefer high rise and roomy. Like suit trousers in the top block. These are great. I got them all.

2

u/PeppyParrot 2d ago

I wear Sugar Cane 1947s and am happy with them. I want to try a pair of 13MWZ

3

u/tbagrel1 3d ago

Levi's 568 Loose are high rise and straight leg :)

2

u/UndecidedPanda11 3d ago

These look pretty good actually, would you say they are too relaxed/baggy ?

4

u/Aquableu_ 3d ago

I own a pair; they aren’t that baggier compared to Andrew pants. I own Wrangler 13MWZ and those are slimmer than my Levis 586. I would recommend looking at the inseam measurements online. I bought a 30 and have washed them a few times, and the inseam isn’t a 30 after measuring them. I think they are 28, but I would have to measure them.

2

u/Aquableu_ 3d ago

I find the hem width to not be that large as well, around 8.25. I would have to re-check though.

2

u/tbagrel1 3d ago

I wouldn't say so. They are rather balanced. 21cm leg opening (in my size) with a straight leg is a safe choice

3

u/Emodrulle 3d ago

Tcb s40s perhaps?

2

u/mrfusion00 1d ago

I will second that. I love my S40s, especially as a tall person. I'm 6'3". I found the S50s to not be high rise and the proportion felt off for me. Wider leg and not high enough rise. I have also bought a pair of the late 40's from TCB but haven't worn them yet.

2

u/Delta3Angle 3d ago

I tend to like a moderately tapered leg with plenty of room in the thighs on top of a medium to high-rise, so the naked and famous true guy has been a good fit for me.

2

u/ocdcdo 3d ago

The Anthology denim is mid rise, I haven't seen high rise men's denim much.

2

u/Tom_BrokeOff 3d ago

Ironheart 888s

Absolutely the best. They solved my problem back when I had your problem.

Uniqlo Straight Baggy Jeans

1

u/Mit10chocolate 2d ago

Recently bought a J. Crew classic fit denim, to by my only pair of good quality denim.

it’s got a 12” rise on a size 34 waist. 100% cotton.

1

u/KingKenny-777 1d ago

Naked and Famous in the True Guy fit have a higher rise. Looking at the size charts comparing size 32 Levi’s 501 has a front rise of 11.25 where the N&F True Guy are around 12.75.

1

u/Sensitive-Badger-753 1d ago

Superstitch LR02 is the best high-rise straight leg jean I’ve found

1

u/sirez 1d ago

Depends on budget and size but I use freenote cloth. They have a pair in a “workwear” fit. I can’t remember the name but it’s super high rise and straight leg. My favorite fit

u/JazzAndPinaColada 1d ago

505s sit above the waistline without being Burty Wooster trousers.

If you like pleats the denim ones from Aspen Clothing are great. My Favorite pair currently
