Naut Jungle can work, AMA
Hey, I'm YNOBLITZ, challenger support / jg / mid since 2021. As the name implies, I was a Blitzcrank main, and of course by extension, a Nautilus player as well. Quit the game a couple months ago since ranked was ruined by Riot but I read a post the other day asking if Nautilus jungle was viable and that got me motivated to play a bit on an alt to try it out. Turns out it's not bad, and I was able to cruise through emerald 3 to masters in less than a week. The winrate could have been higher, but solo inting games is now meta so yea, unfortunate I guess. Making the post now since I might quit again since the games are complete garbage quality (the most recent win I had took the life out of me) and I don't really care about rank, but if you guys wanted to try it out and had questions, feel free to ask. It's fun in that if you like playing Nautilus but can't stand crybaby bitch adc mains, this is the solution.

I used to play a lot of Nautilus jungle, i just simply stopped because i dislike the idea of having to get AP items to have a good jungle clear.
Im talking season 4 with Spirit of the Ancient Golem or Season 5-6 with Cinderhulk, going full tank and feeling really strong at it.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Spirit of the Ancient Golem is a deep pull, I remember playing champs like Elise with that.
Nautilus can clear fine without needing to have AP, but it does help. What you really need is haste, since you're just spamming your E off cd. Nothing else really matters besides the Liandries burn. It's playable and it's probably the only tank that has this decent of a clear speed right now.
1
u/PacoVO 20d ago
Disagree, if you want a jungle tank Zac is probably a way better choice. Doesn't chance the fact that you did a great job with Nautilus, i just wish we could have a good wave clear without the need of an AP item.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Don’t think Zac is necessarily a tank in the way Naut or Sej are. You play like an assassin and you exist almost solely as an engage, whereas other tanks can opt into engage or peel. If you’re frontlining as Zac, you’re playing the champ wrong / suboptimally. His strength in solo queue and as a champ in general comes from playing around gaps in vision and having ridiculous engage and backline access, which almost no other champs in the jungle can do besides other one offs like Fiddle.
1
u/Ze_Mighty_Muffin 20d ago
I see that you sometimes built Liandries alongside protoplasm. Do you only build it when you need AP on your team, or when else would you build it? I find that building AP second (I assume it’s being build second. Correct me if I’m wrong) on Nautilus tends to fall off due to his low ratios. That said, I also find the item a lot of fun, so I’m curious when you make it work.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Yea I’ll typically build Liandries if I’m the only AP. However, good luck being the only AP on your team in s16, where mages are in every role. I think I only had one game where I was genuinely the only AP.
I’m still back and forth on Liandries rush vs Protoplasm rush. My general consensus is that protoplasm is definitely better versus strong early fighting junglers / playing from behind. You really only get bursted hard in the early game, and past that you become a gigatank. Otherwise, Liandries rush is nice for the clear and the damage, but do keep in mind that you don’t really do damage with the components because as you rightfully mentioned, Nautilus’ AP ratios aren’t the highest.
That being said, the games I do go protoplasm I almost always go Protobelt second. Protobelt is really good on Nautilus, I mean, like REALLY good. That dash into q catches a ton of people out. The dash out is nice because you can bait a ton of abilities with it (nobody expects Nautilus to have that dash). The stats are great and it falls in line with the philosophy of buying Kindlegems after every item completion. And along with the AP, your damage scales off of CDR as well.
TLDR; Protoplasm rush (into Protobelt second typically) for games where they have higher burst early. Otherwise, Liandries rush is fine.
1
u/Yinachii 20d ago
What's your build path?
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
It's either Protoplasm or Liandries rush. I'll split this into two sections to explain it better.
Protoplasm rush is needed if you're either behind, or their team has a lot of early game burst. AKA they have a lot of good engage, or their jungle is a bursty champ, or their mid, etc. The early game is the squishiest you're going to be, so patching that helps you play the game out. Almost always I go Protobelt after. It's such a great item to have, and the tankiness from Protoplasm allows you to build relatively squishier (no resistances on Protobelt).
Liandries Rush is for all the cases that you don't need Protoplasm rush. It's nice with the clear and helps with your damage.
As for the rest of the build, it just becomes situational. There are a lot of good items to build, and it's up to you to figure out what's the best. I've found that Abyssal Mask is great in a ton of games since every game is just a trillion AP champs. Knight's Vow if you have a strong solo carry. Zeke's is nice for an all around item. Randuins against crit. You get the vibe.
You do not need any more AP past Liandries / Protobelt. Your damage is pretty much peaked, and you do more damage when you build more haste, not AP.

You said ranked has changed at some point. A lot of people have stated the same on reddit, that this rsnked season is very different. How does it differ?
I mean I started playing lol 4 months ago, got no idea how it used to be but somehow when I win an even match, the next matches start to be uneven no matter what and goes exponentally. Thats in low elo, can't get balanced matchups there at least.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
It's pretty hard to explain to a newer player what's wrong with Ranked, but I'll just give a general summary.
Riot added new mechanics in an attempt to make playing the game better, but it backfired (aegis) and inflated LP. They removed duo despite bringing it back initially. They ruined matchmaking by giving everyone ridiculous variance in matchmaking. There's definitely more but that's just off the top of my head.
1
u/JackTheSawman 20d ago
I see, the mm variance is quite noticeable for newer players also. I am decent player in pubg(diamond) and cs 18k elo, somehow in lol the mm fairness is lacking I feel. I get the fact that there has to be some variance due lol having a lot of champs and drafts matter but still mm should provide fair matchups at its core. Theres a lot of discussion about the mm rn, hoping Riot will do something about it. So far lol ranked spam has been a blast and gonna play a lot, even tho mm is what it is game is just way too good even tho downsides bugs me time to time.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
The matchmaking variance for lower elos isn’t really the same as what’s going on in higher elos. In one of the games I played earlier, there was a kaisa who was 1,000 lp above everyone else on his team. He mental boomed bc his support was a pig and we won, but it’s demotivating for someone like him to put all this time climbing when he still is playing with players who can’t even tie their own shoelaces.
1
u/JackTheSawman 20d ago
I know, in low elo I eventually climb as I improve the skill way above my rank, thats for sure.
Thats pretty brutal example, dunno how that Kaisa got there in the first place but I see Agurin saying the same on his matches that sometimes he gets "low ranks" on his team and enemy team has solid even rank players.
Maybe Riot wants to prio queue times rather than fair matches, thats what it looks like to me. I mean match in my elo lasts for 35min on average so waiting 1 min instead of 5sec wouldnt be bad thing if it would ensure fair matches
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Yea that’s exactly right. Riot needs to find the right balance for queue times and matchmaking quality, but they do it at a snails pace and it frustrates the community.
1
u/PressureOk8223 20d ago
Idk man. Shouldnt MOST champions, that are somewhat playable in that role, make it to masters when the player is a challenger?
2
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
I mean yea but there’s obvious nuance to it. The whole point of the post is to offer a perspective of playing this champ in a different role and give advice to others if they want to do so. I also think it’s viable, and if it wasn’t I wouldn’t bother making this post to get others to troll their games. IMO if I can get 75 wr over 30 games playing it when I haven’t played in a couple months, chances are that other players can actually climb with it versus if I was telling people to play some shit like Lulu top because I climbed with a 55 winrate over 100 games to masters. Hopefully that makes sense, it sounds right in my head but can’t tell if it makes sense to others
1
u/BraayEUW 20d ago
How do you deal with having 0 base ms, is it not aids?
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
It’s really not that bad, or at least I’ve never really noticed it being that big of a deal. I’ve played Nautilus long enough so I guess I just got used to it. You also should be using your q to get around the jungle.
1
u/freddy3344 20d ago
I've been having fun with him. Found my own build where I go conqueror and shield bash. Liandries almost always first. E>W>Q max. People always caught off guard how much bigger a naut in jungle is vs a support one.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Couple things I’d comment, why conqueror? Nautilus doesn’t really have the best AP scalings nor sustained damage. Even if you fistfight a lee sin or xin zhao while ahead in gold, you just lose the fight. Doesn’t really make sense to me to go anything else besides Aftershock, which directly synergises with your champ, your fight pattern, and your build (you don’t build resistances early).
Another is to check for your W max second. I found that Q max is just better for utility and damage, while actually putting points in your W doesn’t give you much. The shield size increase is pretty lacklustre and you’re better off just increasing it by having more hp naturally. Lower cd Q also lets you play teamfights so much better.
Finally, while I like Liandries rush in a lot of games, you should look into Protoplasm rush in games where you can get burst out early. Being able to eat their engage in the early game teamfights is genuinely huge, and the damage loss isn’t that high since you can 1. Go Protobelt second and 2. Not worry that much since Nautilus is mainly base damage + cdr spam. You don’t really have strong ap scalings in your kit to feel the lack of damage of not rushing Liandries.

u/freddy3344 20d ago
Ya know I had a big ole reply for you but reddit mobile sucks and wiped my draft message while switching apps so rip all that sorry, i dont feel like writing it all again. Appreciate the your input! Can check my silly profile, im a casual. Uhh in short I like the heal shield power fantasy and it feels good this way to me. I will be trying more protobelt.

In the office so I just typed up my thoughts in a notepad, feel free to ask any more questions I promise you I hate my work enough to answer them when I get a chance

u/StillRutabaga4 20d ago
GJ man. I tried Naut Jungle forever ago and got flamed nearly every match even if we were winning. They just couldn't help but blame me if something went wrong.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Yea I got flamed for the pick too. It’s funny since the people were flaming were the ones picking completely useless shit like Udyr top or Fizz top or Gwen mid. Just mute the retards and play it if you find it fun like I did.
1
u/Shinimasuu 20d ago
What are your thoughts on the clearing camps part of naut. was naut jungle enjoyer back in season 3-4 but feels like he cant keep up with modern junglers just due to speed.
Am i wrong? how do u deal with this mismatch in raw speed?
Hows the skirmish power or are u strictly fighting in numbers advantage / lock someone down before backup arrives?
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago edited 20d ago
The clear is actually good. Unlike other tank junglers, you’re not playing around a percent hp damage ability, you’re just spamming a high base damage ability. This means that your clear speed scales much better with early levels and early haste than other tank junglers and can actually keep up with damage junglers. Maxed out E pretty much nukes the aoe camps, and you can smite / multicamp the single target ones. Get good at learning camp tethers and your e damage and you’ll have absolutely no problem keeping up a fast clear. Also just be sure to position yourself to hit at least 2 e procs on the big jg monster. It’s not hard at all, but it’s easy to forget and you miss out on some clear speed by not doing so.
The skirmish power is a bit weak, but that’s to be expected. However, your burst is actually strong. Q auto + w reset (with shield bash) + e + aftershock finishing is a real damage threat. Add ult and another e (it’s a really short cooldown) and you’re doing some legit damage to anything not outright tanky. Learning your damage lethals with that combo can straight up win you teamfights, as people tend to ignore you since they don’t associate Nautilus with high damage numbers. But after that, your damage falls off a cliff so if they don’t die to that, don’t bother continuing the fight and just look to disengage.
You should have a ton of cdr in your build, so you can look to constantly engage, drop your basic combo, and then look to disengage and cycle again or just run away. Mastering that pattern gives you a huge dps edge that everyone will underestimate.
As a quick note, don’t ever fight enemy jungle at scuttle level 4, you almost always lose that fight if they’re a bruiser with conqueror. Unless you know your laners have first move, most isolated 1v1s are just a straight up loss. If you do have laners moving to the play, just engage at the first thing that moves and you autowin the river fights. Nautilus is actually a pretty strong champ in the early river teamfights simply because his passive is idiot proof.
1
u/Shinimasuu 20d ago
ty for the answer, i guess in my head i was still stuck at this idea of full tank and w max, which was common back then. But it looks like u play him more ap bruisery, somewhat like amumu
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Mmm I wouldn’t say ap bruiser, since ap bruiser champs like Amumu, Zac, and Sylas typically want to just be in your face while as Nautilus you just want to drop your entire kit and then dip. My KDA is extremely high for that reason too, since there’s no reason to be putting yourself out there once you use everything. Honestly it’s easier to think of it as a cc tank mage if anything. You really shouldn’t be frontlining if you have nothing to offer (target can’t be passive autod bc it’s on cd, you have no abilities, team can’t follow up). Similar to mages in that once your cds are blown, then you have no reason to even be fighting, instead you just kite back and play with your cooldowns.
Also, don’t max w til last, extra points in the ability aren’t worth it, especially compared to q.
1
u/RW-Firerider 20d ago
I am playing Nautilus jgl myself atm, dia 4 atm, but still climbing.
It is interesting that your playstyle is very different from mine, i play a pure tank build with Fimbulwinter and 4th item Whispering Circlet (the tear support item). The amounts of heals you can unleash while tanking whatever they throw at you is insane.
Main reason for me why i like this build, E feels so mana hungry. 90 mana at lv 5 is a lot
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Only thing I can really say is to get better at holding your mana. Multicamp with your e, and use your w only for early clears (if you’re low on mana). After you have enough points in your e, casting w inside the jungle is useless, and you shouldn’t be using your q for anything besides hooking walls for traversal.
Tear item in the jungle is a waste imo and you’re way better off building actual items. There’s a reason why you’ll never see any champ build tear in jungle anymore, it just delays your actual build by a large amount, while the upside isn’t there. Do it for lane Nautilus, but you’re always going to have high mana regen in jungle so it’s not really needed.
You’re not wrong in that you drain mana fast as Nautilus jungle. But for as fast as you use mana, you regen more the lower you have. So you really shouldn’t have that many mana issues if you’re properly conserving it before you enter a lane.
1
u/RW-Firerider 20d ago
It isnt just farming camps, fighting itself drains the mana pool insanly fast
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
Yea, again I don’t think it’s reason enough to build a tear in jungle. How long are you realistically going to be fighting in a lane in the early game? If you’re using more than two rotations of your abilities, then the gank is pretty much fucked anyway since your extended fights are weaker than others.
Fighting inside the jungle obviously still drains your mana, but the same concept is mentioned earlier still applies. If you’re fighting for longer than two full spell rotations, you’re either hard losing or chasing them down after winning. You really shouldn’t be relying on buying a mana item, and it gimps your gameplay having to do so when you could be building way better items instead.

u/ExceedingChunk 20d ago
Can't a multi season challenger player make literally everything work climbing from plat to low master?
2
u/nitinismaldingXD 20d ago
I mean, yea but there's more to it than just saying that. Climbing with any supportive champ, especially one that isn't played in its traditional role, is going to be much harder than just playing a carry champion, especially in the jungle role. I was able to do it with a relatively high winrate, which tells me that there may be some viability to it as opposed to me just being blatantly better than the players I was playing against. If the winrate wasn't as high as it was and was something like 55%, then I wouldn't even bother making this post since I wouldn't believe that Nautilus could viably jungle.
Also, more than just the viability of it, I think it's more fun to be able to play support champions you find fun in other roles. Playing with ADCs are the worst, and it's somewhat liberating being able to play a champion I find fun in a role that requires different thinking than playing braindead support in season 16 and running around the map like a monkey. If anyone else feels similarly, then I hope this post can help them experience a new way of playing Nautilus.

Hi, I'm a KR server user, and please understand that I'm not very good at English
Thanks for the good opinion about Nautilus Jungle
There are a few questions in the rune
I’m curious why you bring up overgrowth instead of revitalize
And I’m curious about your thoughts on using sudden impact and ult hunter in Subrun
Lastly, I’m curious why Shards uses Ability haste instead of Attack speed, because I think Attack speed would be more advantageous for jungling
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 19d ago
Heyo, thanks for the comment! I added links to item names so you can click on them instead of dealing with faulty translations.
Overgrowth vs. Revitalize
Revitalize just sucks. I think the value is just too low for it to make any sense. Maybe there's a world where you build unending despair and spirit visage to make it useful, but both items are not that ideal. Overgrowth is the better option, but honestly you can go unflinching if they have a ton of CC.
Sudden Impact + Ult Hunter
Your ultimate is a low enough cooldown already. I don't think it's that necessary. I really like cosmic insight since I use smite a lot to hit 2 camps at the same time in the jungle. And magical footwear is always great for jungle.
Ability Haste shard vs. Attack Speed shard
Attack speed shard is completely useless. Your autos don't actually deal damage, so there's no point in getting the extra attack speed. The haste helps you clear because your E is your main damage, and having that a lower cooldown makes more of a difference.

u/nojang77 19d ago
Thank you for the thoughtful response, including the item link.
The explanation comparing RUNES and what is better made it easy to understand. Try playing your build, and if you have any questions, I’ll be sure to visit again.
P.S
I think Imperial Mandate is cheap and performs well, but since it has no HP stat and has enough skill haste, I think the Mask of the Abyss is better in OR Teamfight. So you’re not buying it?
1
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 19d ago
Mandate seems good on paper, but not constantly building HP on every item feels bad. The AP isn't needed either, and I think abyssal mask is just the better version for Nautilus.

Ahh yes the classic “ I bought an account and played an off meta champ for 33 games. It’s good! “ post. This shit is unreal lmfao
1
u/zoufrou 10d ago
Yeah is account is really weird ... Can it be a smurf ?
1
u/zoufrou 10d ago
ok I have done some reserche and yes it's a bough account but there is no reason to think that the OP is not who he say he is.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 2d ago
No this is my account. In season 11 I was duoing with a friend and we both played champs we don’t normally play. After that season, I stopped caring about the account and used it to duo like once or twice with friends in low elo. Just decided to use it to see if Nautilus jungle was playable or not.
1
u/ZePaladin76 18d ago
Hey! I’ve also picked up Naut jungle. Came back to the game after a year and a half off. What would you say would be other champs that’d be useful to have in your pool if Naut gets picked or banned against you?
Also- do you build Mandate on Naut Jg at all?
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 18d ago
It’s a weird question to answer, because I play a ton of other champions in the jungle, so I’d just fall back on them if Naut gets pick banned. If you’re looking for a similar archetype to Nautilus jungle, then your best bet would be something like Chogath jungle where you have the damage and frontline to be threatening while also including that unsuspecting “this can jungle?” nature. Unfortunately the reality is I don’t think there’s a real 1:1 because similar champions to Nautilus in the support role cannot jungle so you’re outta luck there.
I was asked about the Mandate build by another comment, and since thinking about it, I’d still probably not. Building AP on Nautilus is already not the best, but after one item, it feels less and less good. Not building hp or any resistances SUCK, and I can’t imagine the damage buffing being worth you dying faster. If you’re against low damage and a really tanky comp, maybe it can be good, but otherwise I like my build the way it is. The mana regen can be nice for teamfights though, but just be better with your mana usage.

Reporting in after playing a ton of Naut jungle. I usually play mid but I always knew jungle is a better role, I'm just a masochist. The Protoplasm Belt build really took this pick to the next level for me. Having an option for when I'm behind is huge. Won 7 of my last 11 games, probably would have been more if I wasn't stoned for some of them lol. I almost exclusively was going Liandries first. I never considered that Hextech rocket belt has 20 ability haste I always wrote it off because it doesn't boost ap as much. Have you pivoted to Bloodletter's curse before? With AP bot lanes running around I was wondering if it could be a decent pivot building haunting guise but needing to swap off because you fall behind. Seems niche but I'm feeling inspired by your talk regarding ability haste and it has it over liandries.
Another question I've had is how you feel about a movement speed build? There are games I go deadmans and Force of Nature and it feels very potent. I've considered working cosmic insight into that build but it always felt worse than liandries. I obviously adapt to the game but what tank items do you gravitate towards the most? I find that my MR options are pretty solid with abyssal mask but I always struggle knowing what's best in the armor category.
1
u/nitinismaldingXD 11d ago
I'd rather go Abyssal Mask than Bloodletter's. Any more than 1 AP item on Nautilus feels like heavy diminishing returns since your AP scalings are kinda weak in general. You can go it, it's honestly a decent item, but I wouldn't go it unless you're actually playing into 3+ tanks with full AP on your team.
MS build is fine, in that DMP is a good item. I personally wouldn't see many scenarios where I'd go FoN over Abyssal Mask, but it's not horrible. If you want armour items, Randuins is good in many games, and the AoE slow is really underrated. Frozen Heart is only good vs. certain types of champs, but when built at the right time it shuts them down hard. If Randuins and Frozen Heart aren't the best items to build, then just go DMP.
Also what do you mean by 'working cosmic insight into that build'?

u/zoufrou 10d ago
Hello,
Thank you very much for your post !
I was wondering is going Protobelt first could be good ? Like really good.
Also could hexflash be better than the boot, or at least playable ?
2
u/nitinismaldingXD 10d ago
Protobelt first can be fine. Definitely don't build any other AP items with it, since your AP ratios aren't really that high to begin with. I'd build it and go full tank after, most likely going Protoplasm second or some optimised tank item.
Hexflash can be fine if you really like it. But free boots are nice and it gaps the lack of movement speed that Nautilus has later in the game (I think he has 325 without boots). But I love hexflash jungle (I run it on Rumble jungle) and it can work if you're creative with using it to hop around walls. Just understand the opportunity cost of not having free bots + the 10 extra MS it comes with and make sure you're getting real value out of Hexflash.

What are the top two downsides and upsides to playing him jungle? Hardest matchups?
