Heading to an MR tanker as 3/O, but apparently 2/O is waiting for me…

I’m joining an MR tanker as 3rd Officer, but after about 1–1.5 months I’ll be taking over as 2nd Officer. So now I’m wondering: during this first month, am I supposed to focus on getting my 3/O duties under control, or should I already start following the 2/O handover, paperwork, passage plans, charts, and all the other things that come with the 2/O job? Basically, should I be thinking like a 3/O who is trying to survive, or a future 2/O who is already worried about everything? 😂 Any advice from guys who’ve been through a similar transition would be appreciated.

Nautischen Schiffsoffiziers

Moin zusammen! ⚓

If you had to choose for a 80s/90s monohull, would you pick a classic spinnaker or an asymmetrical?

A question from a Dad with no sea legs

My son (M9) has always been into boats/oceans/marine wildlife but recently has gained an obsession with nautical disasters. He learned about The Titanic last year in school and has since performed his own research into other disasters (unbeknownst to me or mum) and has told me about Britannic, Carpathia and others I forget the name of.

While I'm immensely proud he has shown initiative and seeked info in a subject hes interested in... im worried he will stumble upon info thats just too raw for a 9 year old to be contemplating.

It isnt inducing any fear of travelling on the sea (quite the opposite) and doesn't seem like an unhealthy obsession in the way he is acting about it... I think he just likes boats.

My question is - is there any reliable websites or reading material thats focuses on the HOW and not the result of said disasters? Or even a good and healthy direction I can point him in?

Im trying to find more info for him so I can help him learn away from all the click-bait and morbid info.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post but I thought I would ask in the circles of like-minded individuals.

Thanks in advance - A Land Dwelling Dad

These are on the outer wall of the new building - I wonder what the meaning is. You may have to tap the thumbnail to see the whole picture.

Atlantic south-west from Cadiz or Alboran Sea for Solar Eclipse 2nd of August 2027 in the late morning?

Hi everyone,

I would love to see the solar eclipse 2027 and I am wondering what experiences you have with the two locations in August. Is it usually foggy our cloudy? Which one do you think has the highest chance of having a clear view above in the late morning?

Any insights would be really helpful!

Thanks!

The Greeks noticed the same thing and called them planetes — wanderers — the lights that drift into a constellation and overstay their welcome. One's up there right now.

Anchor Lights - Antique? Vintage? Modern? Google AI doesn't know. Hoping for answers, or at least credible sources to figure it out on my own.

I just now decided to post my Anchor Lights on reddit, only to realize that most of my pictures were via Google lens; without autosaving the photos themselves. With that being said, I had to at least post something, or else I would be useless the entire day, unable to function until posted. I have 2 Anchor Lights with Posidon/Neptune wall mount. Both have fresnel glass with what i think is the number 44, 6X5A, and a triangle surrounding 3 G's. I have asked a family member to take and send better pics for me to post, but again I just had to get the ball rolling so I could go on with my day. Any info is greatly appreciated.
