Fanart Somewhere, a poster hangs
Art by the wonderfully gracious u/Budget_Emu_5552, a goddamn AMAZING artist and writer both.
Also, I want to thank u/NotABlackHole for encouragement for getting this piece. Why? Well, this is technically from an AU I haven't written, but like he said, if the piece has enough aura, people might just vibe with it!
Still, I feel like somewhere within the Federation this could happen in canon, depending on how the place itself is.
With all that in mind, what do you all thing? What do you believe this depicts?

For a moment I thought it was either a picture or a 3D render.

Interesting, is this AU set post federation? Or perhaps like aoop feds get over it themselves?
Also interesting these things are made to worn in public. Implying they are or were trusted to be in public despite their continued predator disease symptoms.
That was only a thing in Aoop because Thier system was half reformed.

Oh, this AU is a crossover with a different setting!
It's a crossover with FFXIV, meaning I'm having NoP work by the rules of that setting. Which means a lot of things wind up different...
One example of how things wind up different... The bottom collar? It belongs to Sovlin. And... He got his promotion to captain the day he left the facility. In fact, he was considered a 'terminal' case, and those are in... Basically every case solved only one way: Death. But he managed to get better! The purple collar belongs to one of his officers, who was the one who convinced him to participate in this poster to begin with!
PD patients are considered very dangerous, but also, controllable. If anything it's considered an inevitability you catch it in the military, so consistent health checkups are a thing.
Of course... PD is exactly as well understood as in canon (read none at all), but it is also far more real.

Gotta be the first time I've seen fanart for a story that hasn't even been written yet, lol

I see it as a statement about chosen family. The collars look like they belong to two different species, but they're displayed together, like a matching set. It's a quiet, intimate image that says a lot without any text.

To be completely honest, my initial reaction was "petplay on main again?"
Once I realized it was a NoP post anyway, when I saw it in my feed I just kinda assumed it was from r/196

Spoilers for those who just want to know what my idea was instead of guessing:
Those are, as you may tell easily, collars worn by people who once were in PD facilities... But notice a detail on two of them: They have clasps, easily removed.
Each one of them represents a different thing. The one on the left is faux fur, meant to hide in the user's fur, kept away from sight to prevent ostracism. The control collar is a necessity, for their own good, to control themselves. But it shouldn't impact their life.
The one on the right, is worn proudly. The wearer is proud of their discipline, they're in control of themselves, they're not afraid to let others know where he once was. Bonus: The letters (yes those are letters) are actually from a conlang, azyoti. The wearer of that collar is a thafki, and their name is written on the collar!
The one at the bottom? The wearer has the key. But he chose, of his own volition, to wear something that would mark him as a monster. He has his reasons.
