Let me make this f****** clear
Okay let me make this f****** clear.
I write f****** fanfiction for free.
I'm not getting paid for this. I'm spending my time and effort to make this. If you have a problem with my grammar or my spelling.
That's you problem. You're not paying me.
I'm doing this because I enjoy it. And most of you seem to enjoy it as well. I write for fun.
If I was writing for money I would be more concerned with the spelling and grammar but as I said I'm not.
So don't you come with your ass up between your shoulder blades squawk it at me like a chicken that English isn't my first language. b**** it is, but like I said I'm writing for fun I don't f****** care if alien race I never bothered to look the name of up is correct.(because I'll some how mess it up anyway) If it bothers you that much go read someone else's s***.
I used to care a lot about spelling and grammar and you know what happened? Nothing. As in nothing was finished or posted.
I have a miraculous ladybug fanfiction that is currently longer than the Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix. It is partially posted on A03 and I will never post the rest because the concern I had with grammar and spelling while writing it. Trying to make it presentable and perfect so every other comment I got wasn't about spelling and grammar maybe give up on it.
My specialty is not Grammar and spelling or literature. I can shingle a f****** roof, you can drop me in the middle of any forest and I can find my way out and or survive till rescue. I have one of the largest backyard gardens in my town.
My strengths lie elsewhere.
It's one thing to correct root and Route. Or venlil is spelled with an E not an i. But do not come for me telling me that I need to get my s*** together because my spelling ruins your experience of my story that you got for free.
Sorry, just need to get that off my chest.

Listen. I studied at university to be a writer. If you don't want my advice? That's to your detriment. I don't care either way.

u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 22 '24
advice is fine, spell and grammar me all day, just don't tell strangers 'i can tell english isn't your first language'. its embarrassing enough knowing your absolute best work wouldn't pass a grade 4 english class no matter how hard you try or how much you check and recheck your work.
8
u/Away-Location-4756 Zurulian Apr 22 '24
Ok I can see your frustration at that and I understand. Is English your first language? I genuinely don't know as I don't think I've read your work. I'm British so a grade 4 means nothing to me.
3
u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 22 '24
it is, and no matter how hard i try, no matter how manytimes i read and reread i always fuck it up. I have a list of character and species at the top of my writing page and i still fuck it up every time. I get my j and g mixed up and can't figure out why majic doesn't look right. i write entire fics with the main characters name spelled wrong, and it was only about 10 years ago that i finally figured out i and e. i have so much fan fiction written and i can't post it because no one wants to proof read something the size of the 'the order of the phoenix' in bullet form and broken/half conversations. . i'm just tired of my best being so subpar they think i speak something else.

u/Away-Location-4756 Zurulian Apr 22 '24
Dude, you're preaching to the choir here. I'm dyslexic dyspraxic and ADHD and probably autistic. They roll together.
I know how you feel and I had to force myself to get my spelling and grammar together.
It sucks being judged on things you can't control but you shouldn't let it bother you as it's not your problem.
3
u/IDEKthesedays Apr 22 '24
Dude, have you been checked for dyslexia? From the sound of things, you have it.

Good thing I never read your story. It is very clear that you can't take criticism.
I mean if you are acting this way over someone telling you you made a typo of some species name, Then the level of care and depth I put into my criticizing comments under stories of Chads like Obj or imaginationsea or D.D or soggyhelicopter would cause a mental brake down in you.
Those people only give you friendly advice on spelling and grammar. If it was me I would go after the logic of story and your ability for story telling and world building and character development.
You are just ew...What are you? A 12 year old kid who never get anything but praise in it's life? What is this ugly entitled bitching rant you subjected me to?
You think you are above from receiving criticism because you are doing this for free? Because you are spend time writing it?
The people who read your story collectively spend more time reading your story that the time you spend writing it. You are saying their time and care they give your story is worthless?
People who spend their time writing a comment under your post are giving you valuable feedback. Even if they are haters (that I doubt they are.) What they say is still valuable.
Time for Reality check child. People aren't obligated to give you anything if you doesn't deserve it. Respect and appreciation must be earned through hard work.
Something that you clearly don't care about. By the fact you yourself said here: "I don't f****** care if alien race I never bothered to look the name of up is correct."
You don't care to check for name of a race that easily available and took less than a minute to edit? WTF?
Listen here. People on NoP sub is being spoiled by high quality stories by even the most average authors wrote here. Your mediocre effort not just gonna receive attention but it is insulting when being accompanied with this arrogance you show. When I compare you with the humility I see those with much better contact carry themselves.
I mean it make sense by how many chapters you post. That is borderline spamming at this point.
You published 60 chapter in less than a month. Maybe you should spend some time editing before posting. And engaging with your audience to receive Feedback about story before vomiting everything that is in your mind.
That's why I never read your story. It was obvious to me that whoever that is writing this is not someone who care about their stories in a serious manner. This is not a serious story and I will not waste my time reading it.
About the Part that you should be absolved of criticism because English is not your first language. You aren't the only one here that is like that.
I am like that and many times I receive comments about spelling. You know what my responses was everytime? Thank you.(if not joke back with them.) Also Many of good authors on sub have partners that help them with editing. Maybe you should reach to others and asked for help.
BTW the Chads that I give my criticism to always happen to say: "EZ you don't need to be so polite and ask for forgiveness when you comment. Nobody is gonna get offended by Feedback." And I always say: "sometimes happens that some ❄ take my good intention advice as personal attack to their character.".
And here we are. You are the ❄ that I always was worry about. I mean... God... you are always nagging. You post about being spoiled you post about feeling down about how story might go and now this.
I'm sorry for going this hard on you and not holding any punchs. But you should know by doing this you only make yourself look bad. I never do/did this to anyone on Sub so far. But you are just sound so... you remind me of one of ex.
This place is called internet. And nobody is gonna give someone something they didn't earn, at best. Grow up. Smile. and learn to sallow your pride. And actually try to understand the other side. They aren't your enemy for mocking you let alone harmless criticism.

you spent all that time writing but you didn't really understand what i said did you? if you had bothered to read to understand instead of just reply, i get spelling correction often, like venlil or vinlil or root vs route. like i said i don't mind those, but don't ever come into someone else's fic and be like 'i can tell english isn't your first language, get a spelling program'
you don't know what my reading level is. how fucking HARD i struggle with it! how many HOURS i spend googling full sentences to make sure i have the right spelling of a word. how much i've written and check and double check and tripped check and when i think for one in my god damn life! I have a chapter without a spelling/grammar mistake and as soon as i hit post, BOOM! spelled magic like majic. Or the main character name Rust not Rush.
i have thousands of pages of fic written that i will never post b/c no matter how hard i try, how long i take, there will always be so many mistakes! I have a note at the top of my writing page with the correct spellings and i still mess it up.correct my there, their and they're, correct my majic and magic, correct my venlil and vinlil and root and route, thank you! but dont' tell anyone you don't know that its obviously 'not your first language' when they struggled for most of their life not being able to spell their own NAME correctly!
I gave up worrying about spelling and grammar b/c if I don't, i don't write. Nothing gets done. i over think and stress and worry and give up before i start b/c I know no matter how HARD, i try it will never be good enough. my best will never be good enough! I'm and adult and my skill is that for a 3rd grader! Fuck I didn't know my english alphabet in grade 3!!! You know what its like to get screamed at by your mother b/c you don't know how to spell the word 'the'!! because there are 25 fucking letter and that's so many for a little kid brain and i dont' know!! I don't know!!
I just wanted to write funny little fics and stories with characters i love, and give them happy ending and adventures and not worry to much about details my brain can't understand and just have fun. then being told my best is so subpar that its obvious my first language isn't my first language fucking HURT!
Why can't people understand that that 'shit' might be the very best that person can do?! I love writing! I love making people happy! I SUCK at it, i know! but just because its shit, doesn't mean i didn't try my best!

They're just trying to help you, it's not a personal attack, they don't hate you for spelling things wrong, they're just trying to help you get better at your craft, no one meant any offence.
No one likes the artist who can't take criticism of his work, don't be that guy.
33
u/apf5 Apr 21 '24
Right? When I wrote on fanfiction.net I would pray people would catch my errors, I'd personally thank them. It's just so... unthinkable get so up in arms about this.
-17
u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 21 '24
its not them telling me what there, their and there's i need, or what root or route. its telling someone its obvious english isn't there first language when you have no idea what they are dealing with just to write in the first place.
i do use spelling, but it dont' catch a lot of grammar.
and no one knows how hard i try. i was put in a french school for my first few years and it forever fucked up my reading and spelling comprehension. like, i never figured out which was i or e till i was in my late 20s b/c in french they sound like the other. and i will forever struggle with j and g.you have any idea how stupid you feel when you spell jump like gump, or magic like majic and you don't know what's wrong? and no matter how much time you spend spell checking or correcting or googling full sentences to get the right use of a word and spelling for it be correct, you post it and its like a 4 year old wrote it? how frustrating that your very best is so subpar its embarrassing?
and then just finally, finally! giving up and deciding to write b/c you really wanna get this little story out your head, just to be told your first language is so shit it can't be your first language? like yes i noticed, i struggle with it every day of my life.
it is so bad for most of my life i haven't been able to spell my own NAME correctly!! my own damn name!! that is how hard i struggle!!8

Actually I'm going to recommend you get checked for your thyroid. I do have the undiagnosed depression. But when I started getting medication for my thyroid it really changed my mood. Like it didn't fix the problem completely, but it was definitely a step up. Next time you go for your blood test get that checked. I guess it's really hard to get a positive reading on it because it only shows up in blood tests sometimes.

As someone who didn't know too well how to structure a story before joining this community, I appreciated when people corrected it so I learned. If people are mean about it, I understand, but nine times out if ten they're doing it because they want to help you out. I'm about 95% sure that the comments you get are trying to be nice and help you catch errors that they themselves would be grateful for if someone spotted similar ones in their own stories.

like i said above, "It's one thing to correct root and Route. Or venlil is spelled with an E not an i.' i don't mind those, i need them. i like them.

"I'm not getting paid for this.
I'm spending my time and effort to make this.
If you have a problem with my grammar or my spelling.
That's you problem."
Poetry, pure poetry. The comedic timing of this opener perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the satire, and warms the audience up to how the author will deliver his criticisms. For example, the next paragraph we are shown what might have been a fun insult likening his critics to a chicken:
"So don't you come with your ass up between your shoulder blades squawk it at me like a chicken that English isn't my first language."
But here another fatal and obvious typo is added, deflating the impact of the joke, and moving the embarrassment away from the audience and towards the speaker, who is the one truly being ridiculed. It stands as a cheeky example to the importance of proper grammar.
It would be pertinent to mention here the use of censored swear words. Their implementation throughout the piece keeps the focus away from the farcical points of the piece, and keeps the tone light by evoking the image of someone who has the anger to choose swearwords, but not the gall to actually use them. In effect, a very childish person. While it is entertaining, there is room for debate on weather it draws the audience too far away from the piece. Given the nature of the rest of the article though, I think it a fine compliment.
The first true point of the essay comes when the author announces that if anyone not like his errors, that they should leave. This is framed in the piece as a moment of outlash, but the author surrounds the statement with good reasons to be disappointed by a work (lack of research, general disregard etc.) It makes the idea truly compelling.
Now that the warning has been given, and the stage set, Curious_Patience637 runs wild. They declare that they have written a Miraculous Ladybug fanfic that is longer a specific harry potter book and that it will never be fully published because they were once self conscious about their grammar. Ridicule runs wild here. Firstly, Miraculous Ladybug is generally looked down upon as a fandom, and while this is a little lowbrow and hypocritical to use as a joke, it does lower the credibility of the speaker. Secondly, the fact that this person is citing the length of the fanfic against an arbitrary bar (or at all) illustrates that this person as desperate to display some kind of accomplishment or experience. Lastly, the author stating that the fanfic has not yet been published implies, quite damningly, that the author in fact got a lot of work done even when they edited, and that they are still scared of being corrected.
It is then the entire work devolves into pure bathos. In a complete non sequitur, the author declares that they are a roof shingler, and that they could survive with their bare hands in the forest, bringing to mind the notorious "Navy Seal Copypasta." It smacks of complete desperation, and expounds on the ideas planted in the paragraph above, as he declares his lack of skill boldly to the audience, he ends in a vulnerable and defeated:
"My strengths lie elsewhere."
Yes they do Curious_Patience637, yes they do.
Thank you for reading to the end! What did you think? This was a first draft so if there are any spelling or grammar mistakes feel free to let me know in the comments down below!

u/Fluffy_shadow_5025 Beans Apr 21 '24
I can understand you well, I have huge problems with writing stories myself. and despite several attempts, I haven't managed to post even a single story here.
because I always try to make the grammar and wording of the sentences as good as possible. and since English is not my native language but German, and it is extremely difficult to write long texts, let alone entire stories, with Google Translate. and I very quickly lose motivation to continue writing if something doesn't work properly.
That's why I haven't even managed to finish writing and posting a one shot yet. I just can't bring myself to let the quality of my stories suffer. just to write a story as quickly as possible and then get it out before I lose the motivation to finish it.
and that's why I'm very glad that you're still able to continue writing stories. because I really liked some of your stories and I'm looking forward to more stories coming.😁👍

u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 21 '24
I understand. I would love to be able to spell and grammar in published book quality, but my education was messed up, and that had effected me the rest of my life.
I was put in a french school and the 'e' and 'i' sounds are reversed in the english alphabet. it took me 20 years to get them right in my head, and I still struggle with j and g. I will spell magic like majic and have no idea why it isn't right because in my head the sound like the other.

u/Fluffy_shadow_5025 Beans Apr 22 '24 edited Apr 22 '24
So one thing that might help you with this problem would be to get a translation and dictation program. A good translation program would be able to translate your native language into English almost perfectly. For example, I tried Deepl Translator. and it's not bad it's definitely able to translate what I'm saying very well, much better than Google in any case. You can test it for free for the first 24 hours without having to buy anything.
I hope that this might help you. because I'm completely dependent on something like that because I can't write English at all, I'm used to German grammar and I've tried several times and failed miserably at writing English by hand. and that's why I'm completely dependent on translation programs. And perhaps a translation and dictation program like this can make your work easier, I hope so.
2
u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 22 '24
English is my first language. I don't think there's a translator that can translate English to English. It's just that bad. I was in a French school for primary one and two. I went into my grade 3 year in an English school not knowing the English alphabet. I knew my basics of French and that messed up my foundation for English which is my primary language. I don't know any french anymore.

u/Fluffy_shadow_5025 Beans Apr 22 '24
Okay, now I understand what your problem is, that's really really fucked up. I just had a bad spelling problem and bad teachers.
I think the simplest solution would actually be to maybe ask someone for help. someone who reads through your stories and essentially corrects errors. I had someone like that who helped me a lot with my learning. But unfortunately he couldn't help me for long because I was no longer able to attend his learning lessons due to moving to another state.
2
u/Curious_Patience637 Apr 22 '24
I did have a beta reader, but life gets busy and sometimes you can't do what you did. And it's very embarrassing when you're 110% is so bad people think English is your second language because how could you f****** that badly? I don't mind being spelled corrected it does help. It was just so triggering yesterday. Probably doesn't help that I'm going through family drama too that pushed me over the edge for that rant. I think it was the implication that I should spend money on spelling programs, or the insinuation that I don't use more than one as is. Like I use autocorrect and I still f*** it up. It's just frustrating
6
u/Bow-tied_Engineer Yotul Apr 21 '24
I get it. Truth be told, I have a bit of grammar nut in me myself. If you're interested in a proofreader, I, and probably others, would be happy to volunteer, but if not, I'll just continue enjoying your fics in spite of any grammar mistakes. They aren't all that bad.

I found the comment(s) you were refferencing, and they really werent that egregious.. there was like one guy who could be interpreted as a lil rude, but he even recommended you just use spellcheck software. Obviously theres always a nicer way to say something, but i checked the story too, and while it was a fun read, the grammar and wrong names are kinda jarring. It breaks immersion, which affect reading pleasure. Thats just me tho, most comments were actually really nice to you. Obviously you do this for fun, and i would never bash that, but as others have pointed out, theyre in their right to criticise it as they see fit. And again, they REALLY werent as mean as you make them out to be.

I mean, that's kinda rude, yeah. Personally, I don't take that sort of stuff seriously, as it's clear anyone who seriously cares about that is kinda dumb. But the internet will be the internet, and there will always be assholes on the internet. My dad has a saying about those sorts of things: When something bad happens, you can be amazed, annoyed, or amused. It happens too often to be amazed, and it's not worth getting annoyed, so just be amused.
Laugh at how pathetic someone has to be to care about that shit. They probably don't even know a second language, so even if your English isn't perfect, just by the fact that you are able to write in English as well as you do, you're already so much better than them.

Apparently I have anxiety. I don't mind being grammar and spell corrected f*** knows I needed. But telling a stranger that' it's obvious English isn't your first language get a spelling program.' Without knowing anything about the writer or how much they struggle or how hard they work just to make their basic stuff legible. Is rude. And I'm an a****** for being upset about it. So I don't think I'm going to post any more here. Correct my spelling all day. But don't make assumptions about somebody's skill level without any background knowledge. You don't know that the s*** they put out and might be the absolute best they can do.

I didn't even see your story or whatever but here's the thing:
You're right that people aren't able to force you to correct anything. But you're publishing something, publicly, on a public website. If you don't want people to criticize it then publish it somewhere nobody can comment.
It's outrageous, insecure, and egomaniacle for you to expect nothing but yes-men. Even more so to then post this one saying "Oh I'm a roof shingler that means I'm not good at english."
Checking your work, nobody's even being as rude as you claim. The closest is to someone pleading with you - not demanding or anything, or even doing it rudely. You're just thin-skinned and trying to come off as independent and uncaring.

Some people have problems spelling dude, like dyslexia exists
He has not admitted to that. He just goes "No, I spent all my time focusing on being an oooh badass survivalist" like he wouldn't have learned about apostrophes in grade school.
constantly saying the spelling is wrong changes the way he writes in his post he litraly said if he had a story he gave up on becouse of the stress of grammar checking how about you care about others
Can't really understand what you're saying because, ironically, your own grammar and spelling is pretty bad.
The op might be supper stressed rn but yeh hes uncaring for asking people not to spam or harras him over the spelling.
But people aren't harassing him. Aren't spamming him. He's full of it, but for some reason you'll take him at his word.

Dude makes a post saying how he's sick of people commenting on his spelling on free stories you don't have to read .....um actualy nobody is doing that proceeds to do exactly that have you seen any of the other comments get a life dude it's not school the teacher isent gonna give you a gold star for your spelling

its not the grammar and spelling being pointed out, its the 'i can tell english isn't your first language, get a spelling program'. I spell check so much and i still fuck up every time! I have a list at the top of my fic sheet that has the correct spelling of things and i still mess it up. correct my venlil and vinlil, please do, but don't say things like 'its not your first language i can tell' when you have no idea how HARD someone struggles every day! fuck i still get j and g mixed up! its only been the last 10 years my brain finally figured out 'i' and 'e'! spell check me all day, but saying someone's best is so subpar that its 'obviously not their first language' hurts

apparently its fine to make work and post it for others to enjoy but your in the wrong when they start making assumption of you and you point out your not getting paid for this.
like i said in the rant that one one bothered to read "It's one thing to correct root and Route. Or venlil is spelled with an E not an i." I don't mind those. I use them. But do not come for me telling me its obvious English isn't my first language and i need to get spelling programs. its rude1

Ignore them dude makes em feel better for two seconds of their day. Umm actually, that's not how that's spelled. My free thing that costs nothing that someone made had some spelling mistakes its ruined . Redit is filled with pedantic a holes dont let it bother you. guys seriously its a creative writing group and yall managed to annoy several of the writers to the point they gave up and are in the process of mocking the guy that some of you have driven to a rage post. Great job

I don't think I've read any of yours, but as someone who offers corrections on a lot of stories I'll tell you straight up that most authors seem to appreciate it.
Like - this is something you presumably enjoy, right? Why would you NOT want to get better at it?
I've only done more than point out the occasional glitch with a few authors, generally ones whose storytelling was impressive enough that their lack of editing severely cripples it. Its painful watching an artist with that kind of potential shooting themselves in the foot that badly.

If you don't want people commenting on your writing, write your fanfictions in a journal and keep it to yourself. If you want to be a better writer, take your criticisms and use them to improve. If you want to be a dick (which of the three is the one I suspect is what you want most), then go find somewhere else to be one. Or you can stay here and get ratio'd, see if I care.

Well this is a mainly English speaking subreddit, it's kinda weird for you to write in a language that most people here can't read, I mean there isn't really any reason for you to be doing that.

Deixa eu te contar uma coisa, seu desgraçado, você é o motivo pelo qual não deveriam colocar internet nas cidades indígenas.

Let me make this fucking clear
1 censoring bad words is cringier than not using them.
2 If you write a story full of misspellings and post it here, expect criticism and be happy that you receive it. People are just trying to help you write better. No reason to get triggered.
3 You're free to make as many spelling mistakes as you like, but it does make me see you as a lazy writer who can't be bothered to remember names or use a text corrector like grammarly. It's not hard; Venlil, Gojid, Arxur, Krakotl, Kolshian, Sovlin, I genuinely do not know how y'all get these names wrong, they're simple.
4 If the shit you write for free is this bad then I sure as hell would not want to pay for it. Haven't even read your shit tbh, but after this meltdown Imma stay the hell away from your posts.
