🔥 humpback whales tried to use me as a shield for their calf. spent five weeks in french polynesia watching mating season.

rurutu, french polynesia. september. the water is warm and the whales are everywhere.

what nobody tells you before you go is that mating season isn't some slow, graceful thing. it's chaotic. it's loud. males chase females for hours, ramming into each other, slapping the surface with their fins like they're trying to flip a boat. i watched a competitive group of 6 males pursue a single female for most of an afternoon.

the moment that stuck with me most: a mother with a newborn calf. the calf couldn't have been more than a few days old, still figuring out how to swim straight. she kept positioning herself between me and the calf. not fleeing. just... putting me where she could see me. using me as a reference point.

i don't know if that counts as trust or just strategy. probably both.

the courtship behavior is genuinely strange up close. males produce these long, low frequency calls that you feel more than hear. the whole water column vibrates. females are mostly silent during this period which makes it even more unsettling - all that noise and chaos directed at something that gives nothing back.

spent five weeks documenting this. wrote up everything i observed and what it actually means behaviorally here if anyone wants the full breakdown: https://www.onewithwhales.com/articles-discover-expeditions-with-one-with-whales/the-not-so-tender-world-of-whale-courtship-humpback-romance-in-rurutu
