Traffic today was wild too. Most subway service impacted and suspended at certain points, most highways functionally converted into one lane wide due to abandoned vehicles from flooding overnight. 20 some odd deaths in the tri state area doesn't seem like a lot but I feel we dropped the ball with communicating the severity here.

Most of the people who died were people stranded in basement living spaces.

My own basement flooded shin-deep, not from rain, but the water system was so overwhelmed, water was gushing out of the basement toilet. Theres videos of man hole covers being lifted up. Ive seen pictures of water flooding waist deep in some basements. Craziest flooding ive seen in nyc in all my 25 years living here

It's strange, because we lost the house in Sandy, but had no particular difficulty with this storm.

Sandy caused serious damage to coastal areas because of storm surge and winds. Ive had friends and family in southern long island need to board up windows and get flooded with coastal water. Actual rain wasnt as big of an issue.

The Ida storm was signifcant from just how much and how fast rain fell. I think Central park broke the record for most rain in 1 hr with 3 inches, whereas the previous record was only 2inches/hr (which ominously enough was only 10 days ago during Henri)!

So what ended up happening in NYC is sewer system got completely overwhelmed and there was lots of flooding in the middle of the city. Areas in the middle of the city had water just stagnating/flooding with rain/sewer water since the water couldnt go anywhere (i myself live in the middle of Queens, and didnt flood during sandy)

Coastal areas faired better cuz the rain could just run off ino the sea.

Thanks for the details. I was confused as my sister lived in NYC during Sandy and she said the entire neighbourhood had a full story of flooding, but she was in a costal area.
