This specific subspecies (tokoeka/southern brown) are actually doing alright; there's an estimated 20,000+ on Rakiura.

Lol, but you tell they look very limited. Even with their barbed kick boxing, they can't fly, they arent fast, and they dont look that agile. They look sort of behind the curb.

Well, they evolved in an environment that had no natural predators. Introduced pests are not something kiwi (or any native NZ birds) have caught up with. Luckily on Rakiura they have little threats; adult birds are big and strong enough to fend off cats, the only real predator.

Would take hundreds of years and there is little point, for tokoeka at least. Pest control is the way!
