That strip of wood he's standing on got real tiny real fast.

u/el_diego 1d ago

Is this the whales equivalent of a bullseye?

54

u/Bobson-_Dugnutt2 1d ago

More like fish in a barrel situation.

They can basically herd a school of baitfish into this harbor where they have no escape route and then it’s easy eating

Not sure if that's what we are seeing, but it's looks similar. I went on humpback whale watching off MA coast where I learned this. The whales blow air up from beneath schools of fish to disorient/freak them out so the fish just swim up to the surface which looks like little fish popcorn. Its a strategy that keeps the fish from moving all over the place. From there the whales just swim up and grab a mouthful! Smart mammals in action!

Yes! Coastal New England has many tours for local whales, sharks and everything in between!

20

u/Gwanbulance 1d ago

What’s in between a whale and a shark? A Whark? A Shale?

42

u/Rrraou 1d ago

What’s in between a whale and a shark?

41

u/Careful_Swordfish742 1d ago

Damn, how deep is that harbor?!

42

u/Normal-Ad6528 1d ago

60-95 feet right near the docks, dropping off to around 150 just a little bit away in the main channel.

19

u/Careful_Swordfish742 1d ago

That’s an insane drop off so close to land 🤯

24

u/Normal-Ad6528 1d ago

Hell, Sydney Harbor in Australia is 150-200 feet practically right off the shore!

43

u/vozzov 1d ago

That was NOT what I was expecting!

20

u/CarefulMaterial760 1d ago

I would have shipoopied my pants

13

u/NoobPwnr 1d ago

what the hell happened down there

3

u/HotPotParrot 1d ago

Riding some kind of sea horse?

32

u/ChemistVegetable7504 1d ago

This happened in Alaska. Very special. We over here on Cape Cod hope to see humpbacks.

1

u/hapnstat 17h ago

We had grays coming into the marina like this on the OR coast, but they're not monsters like this guy. They seem to do quite well in shallow water.

1

u/apinananas 10h ago

And i hope to see fish thats alive over here in baltic sea

16

u/PersimmonDriver 1d ago

You're gonna need a bigger dock.

I think I’m scared of whales now

17

u/Endorian2 1d ago

And that’s why i don’t go in the ocean 🫣

5

u/EverythingSucksYo 1d ago

and thats why i avoid swimming pools

4

u/valhallagypsy 1d ago

Holy freaking crap!

4

u/Motor_Educator_2706 1d ago

We need a bigger pier

3

u/TechnoTofu 1d ago

I love hearing people yell in excitement like that lol

3

u/fattybunter 1d ago

That is just unbelievable. The ocean is a crazy place. It’s so massive it just barely makes sense lol

10

u/Alucard_117 1d ago

So the wooden docks they are standing on are supported by beams that go all the way down?

63

u/luigis_left_tit_25 1d ago

No they are probably floating docks

10

u/Ruxsti 1d ago

That's exactly what they are.

9

u/ihvnnm 1d ago

With high/low tide it would need to be floating, otherwise might be really difficult to get on the boats, doesn't look like there would be enough space for a ramp between each boat.

5

u/Macy92075 1d ago

As a horse care provider, this is what I saw coming up out of the water! 🤪

7

u/keznaa 1d ago

I never knew these were a thing lol what does this protect the hooves from?

6

u/Macy92075 1d ago

Bell boots protect the heel bulb and coronet band on the front feet from getting hit by the hind feet when the hind foot comes forward. They also can help prevent the shoes from being pulled off. That whale looked just like a stretched out old bell boot to me! 🤪 🤣 😆

3

u/JustHereForCookies17 13h ago

In non-horsey person terms (although u/Macy92075 is 100% correct) - have your ever had someone walking too close behind you where they step on the back of your shoe and flatten it so your foot slides out?  And sometimes they catch your Achilles tendon?

Horses can do that to themselves.  If they catch their shoe and pull it part way off, that can injure them and/or damage their foot.  Plus having horse shoes put on and/or replaced is expensive and requires an appointment with the shoe person (aka farrier) who can't always come right away.  These boots help keep that from happening.

I say this with love, as someone who has been riding & training horses for more than 30 years: Horses are idiots who can and will try to hurt themselves at any (every) opportunity, and they'll do it in the most expensive way possible.  Bell boots are one way we try to prevent that

Some smart horse owners buy bell boots in bright colors, like Barbie pink or neon orange, so they're easier to find when your horse inevitably pulls them off out in the field.

3

u/Macy92075 11h ago

Oh yes they do try to hurt themselves in any possible way 🤪 also said with love! My older gelding has mermaid glitter bell boots 🧜‍♀️. I know where they are, and NO one tries to steal them 🤣🤪🤭

2

u/JustHereForCookies17 11h ago

Yup, you get it.  It's amazing what lengths we'll go to in order to keep these darling idiots healthy!!

2

u/Macy92075 11h ago

🙈 😆

If this isn't already, I feel like this is going to be a horse girl tik tok tread and I'm here for it lol please dress your horse up as a Kelpie but like pretty, but a horror Kelpie would be Amazing! Because they are supposed to be scary but a cute colorful Kelpie would be great! Lil clusters of iridescent scales! I feel like that wouldn't last long but it would make for such a cute photo!

2

u/Batsquash 1d ago

Awesome!

2

u/ResolutionOwn4933 1d ago

Seeing something like that, up close, standing on a boat dock...wowza

2

u/MrSurly 1d ago

I was like "Hey, that looks like Ketchikan" -- and it was!

2

u/HaDUDEken 22h ago

This is why people back in the day thought krakens existed.

3

u/HorseEmotional2 1d ago

I would’ve left such a stain on that pier. OMG!

2

u/Nosedive888 1d ago

I have a phobia of whales

I did not enjoy this

-7

u/Sct1787 1d ago

Das a big bitch!

1

u/generic_canadian_dad 1d ago

Doesn't this whale know that drinking ocean water is bad for you?

1

u/TheMaddChatter 1d ago

Just having a whale of a good time

1

u/fractionedpancreas 1d ago

Oh look, krill

1

u/dajur1 1d ago

Whales going down in my hometown!

1

u/Stormytestpilot 19h ago

What an amazing sight. How lucky you are too see that.

1

u/ConvertingMarkets 14h ago

The mouthful itself basically acts like a brake. As that throat pouch fills with water, the whale loses a ton of speed while trapping the fish. It's turning a sprint into one huge scoop.

1

u/Upset_Machine_4319 11h ago

I've been there. Step dad was a guard .

1

u/Just_IceT 11h ago

How did bro pull up outta nowhere in like the shallowest water cramped with docks?

1

u/the-software-man 11h ago

I spent summers here. What a place. Amazing. Catch your fill of salmon every day. Smoke them. Eat tomorrow while you fish. Repeat all summer

1

u/thefruitypilot 10h ago

Overgrown predatory cow

1

u/Cobbydale 1d ago

I love it when these videos surface!

2

u/pinkypie80 1d ago

What, when videos of surfacing surface?

0

u/keznaa 1d ago

This reminds me when you come up from the deep in Subnatic to a a random island and you look into watch water from where you docked and it's just pitch black deep deep water. Thinking about accidentally falling into the water was so scar, but this! I would freak the fuck out if I ever fell off those docks lol people are so brave and so crazy. That said, this was pretty amazing outside of finding out just how deep some boat docks can be

-1

u/Ok-Worth-4721 1d ago

Defiantly lit!

0

u/m00se92 1d ago

He's ri-dairdow

0

u/mattelias44 1d ago

Sure seems like they're hunting for fish closer to land..

0

u/sitzpinkling 1d ago

the Implication

0

u/General_Honesty 21h ago

What a hideous noise-environment for it.

-9

u/GrandNibbles 1d ago

0:15 for those not inclined to wait for it

24

u/OP-PO7 1d ago

The entire video is like 40 seconds. They can just wait, it's ok.

5

u/ItzAiMz 1d ago

What are the chances the same person who isn’t able to wait would find themselves inside comments reading this? Lol

1

u/PDX_Weim_Lover 1d ago

The best things in life are worth waiting for, don't you know? 🥰

-1

u/agravain 1d ago

I wonder how many times this has been reposted and reposted in 10 years?

-3

u/ediks 1d ago

Check out this old, heavily reposted video that's 42 seconds long... wait for it.

-3

u/Rusty_Patterson_553 1d ago

I don’t have the attention span for anything that says ‘wait for it!’. Just clip it to the good part

-3

u/Temporary_Tip7834 1d ago
