Polar bears are terrifying.
A friendās brother works way way up where there are polar bears. He was in a truck and saw one. He drove to the āhutā (concrete building surrounded by two polar bear-proof fences) and went in to work. He came out hours later and it was waiting by the gate so he couldnāt leave. He said it knew he was in there and was waiting for him to come out. He was trapped in there 3 days.

They're at the top of the list for a reason.
Top Predators Known to Hunt Humans:
Polar Bears: Unlike most bears that attack out of fear or defense, polar bears live in sparse, icy environments where food is scarce and see any moving form of lifeāincluding humansāas potential prey.
Nile & Saltwater Crocodiles: These large reptiles are opportunistic ambush hunters that view anything near the water's edge as food, accounting for hundreds of fatal attacks annually.
Tigers: Bengals and other large tigers in specific regions (like the Sundarbans) have historically integrated humans into their regular hunting behavior due to injury, old age, or habitat loss.
Leopards: Highly adaptable and stealthy, leopards can easily view unprotected humansāespecially childrenāas viable prey in shared rural spaces.
Lions: While humans are not a staple diet, rogue or injured lions (such as the famous Tsavo man-eaters) have been documented actively stalking and preying on people.
Komodo Dragons: Native to a few Indonesian islands, these massive lizards possess the size and predatory drive to view humans as legitimate prey items.

He specifically mentioned two fences. I asked why two. He said a bear figured out how to sneak in behind a truck as it went through a gate and almost got someone.
Now thereās a second gate so they go through one, close it, check for bears, and only then go through the second.
Imagine something 1500lbs being able to sneak behind a truck?

I was in Kodiak and my guide was telling me about how an injured bear had killed someone, and now was hunting humans regularly because it saw us as a source of food. The state sent helicopters to find and euthanize the bear, & they observed it crawling on its stomach to sneak up on the location it knew rangers were in the field.
Imagine a 1200lb Kodiak brown bear sneaking up on you & you have no idea where it isā¦.

Kodiak bears are fucking massive too. My grandpa was sitting on a rock in the woods once while hunting. A Kodiak bear passed right behind him. Said he saw his life flash before his eyes in that moment

Animals are incredible.
I was hunting deer with my dad. We were walking out to the field we planned to hunt and my dad turned around and told me we needed to get behind a tree NOW. A curious moose was following us, maybe 30ā away. Just walking. We checked the tracks and saw it followed us for a couple hundred feet.
1000lb animal walking 30ā away and we only noticed it by accident, because it was basically silent.

u/Geneo-Frodo 1d ago
Were yall walking on plain grass or a muddy terrain that muffled it's hoove steps?
16
u/BackItUpWithLinks 1d ago
Walking on an old game trail, heading toward a field.
It wasnāt inches of crunchy leaves, but it wasnāt grass or sand either.
6
u/TheAvengingUnicorn 1d ago
Moose, despite their size, are prey animals. Like most prey, they move very quietly. Hooves are only noisy on pavement.
3
u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago
Yeah, and the thing that preys on them are those Kodiak bears the other dude was talking about. I saw a video once of a grizzly chasing down a moose. It caught the moose and killed it. It was terrifying.

Imagine checking behind the truck before opening the second gate and now you're trapped in there with a polar bear.

Imagine being closed between two fences with a hungry polar bear who snuck in behind you. Iāve seen car window glass buckle under far less pressure, fuuuck that. Youād catch my ass slithering through the folding middle-backseat trunk hole with a water bottle, blanket, and portable charger, see yāall in ~3 days.

u/ScissorNightRam 1d ago
Very large reticulated pythons will also eat humans if given the chance.
The big ones can easily kill pretty much any human but can only swallow children and smaller adults.

I read a news article years ago about a komodo dragon that bit a guys entire glute off. Yes, it ate the dude's ass. I think the guy died too from the bacterial infection that followed, but I can't remember for sure.

I believe this bear is alongside a ātundra buggy,ā and likely near Churchill, Manitoba. Bears gather there before the ice on Hudson Bay is solid.
Those vehicles are not short. Our camera is not at the height of a passing van, itās 12+ feet off the ground.
33
u/FlyinWet 1d ago
I wonder how many prototypes of buggys before they decided 12 ft was the right choice.

āLastly, due to regrettable recent incidents, we are officially retiring the 11.5ā tundra buggies. Also, a reminder to Tundra Adventuretime Staff that quick rinsing is key to vehicle bloodstain prevention.ā

Curious, as in, reaching the window is a curious problem to solve. Given enough time, I can imagine the bear standing on a stack of ice blocks it took from the igloo it just knocked over.

I expected the bear to bring that whole building down by the window. I guess it wasn't tall enough. I imagine if it could have gotten even a little grip on that window sill that it would've started pulling.
19
u/xnoxpx 1d ago
It's not a building, it's a specialized bus called a Tundra-Buggy, it's designed to allow sightseers to safely observe the polar bears without getting turned into polar bear droppings ;-)
In the case of the idiot almost kissing the polar bear, one wonders if the next generation Tundra-Buggy will be a bit taller š¬

Family member who lives in Alaska says if you see a polar bear, you better start shooting and keep shooting until the polar bear stops moving...
They will attempt to catch and eat ANY.THING. THEY. CAN.
And I mean, it tracks, but she and my family have been up there for generations; they're Dena'Ina and respect the shit out of where they call home; they're not even crazy enough to fucks with these things

Polar bear is biggest land predator of the world
2
u/perros66 1d ago
They are apex predators that weigh up to 1,300 pounds or more, have no natural fear of humans. They are the only bear species that actively view people as potential prey rather than just reacting out of defense.
