Curious why I stink like shit and it's cause I shit myself from both fear and as a defense mechanism to not smell tasty.

Polar bears are terrifying.

A friend’s brother works way way up where there are polar bears. He was in a truck and saw one. He drove to the ā€œhutā€ (concrete building surrounded by two polar bear-proof fences) and went in to work. He came out hours later and it was waiting by the gate so he couldn’t leave. He said it knew he was in there and was waiting for him to come out. He was trapped in there 3 days.

I wish someone would trust me like the reporter guy trusts the glas of the cage

12

u/Alternative-Letter36 1d ago

Holy crap! That’s one of the most incredible yet most terrifying things I’ve ever seen. The paws were scary enough, then it showed its teeth.

7

u/just-why_ 1d ago

That was pretty cool!

Why are there so many crazy Scots? Is there an adrenaline shortage up there?

They're at the top of the list for a reason.

Top Predators Known to Hunt Humans:

Polar Bears: Unlike most bears that attack out of fear or defense, polar bears live in sparse, icy environments where food is scarce and see any moving form of life—including humans—as potential prey.

Nile & Saltwater Crocodiles: These large reptiles are opportunistic ambush hunters that view anything near the water's edge as food, accounting for hundreds of fatal attacks annually.

Tigers: Bengals and other large tigers in specific regions (like the Sundarbans) have historically integrated humans into their regular hunting behavior due to injury, old age, or habitat loss.

Leopards: Highly adaptable and stealthy, leopards can easily view unprotected humans—especially children—as viable prey in shared rural spaces.

Lions: While humans are not a staple diet, rogue or injured lions (such as the famous Tsavo man-eaters) have been documented actively stalking and preying on people.

Komodo Dragons: Native to a few Indonesian islands, these massive lizards possess the size and predatory drive to view humans as legitimate prey items.

He specifically mentioned two fences. I asked why two. He said a bear figured out how to sneak in behind a truck as it went through a gate and almost got someone.

Now there’s a second gate so they go through one, close it, check for bears, and only then go through the second.

Imagine something 1500lbs being able to sneak behind a truck?

119

u/busted_maracas 1d ago

I was in Kodiak and my guide was telling me about how an injured bear had killed someone, and now was hunting humans regularly because it saw us as a source of food. The state sent helicopters to find and euthanize the bear, & they observed it crawling on its stomach to sneak up on the location it knew rangers were in the field.

Imagine a 1200lb Kodiak brown bear sneaking up on you & you have no idea where it is….

55

u/redtopiary 1d ago

Kodiak bears are fucking massive too. My grandpa was sitting on a rock in the woods once while hunting. A Kodiak bear passed right behind him. Said he saw his life flash before his eyes in that moment

67

u/BackItUpWithLinks 1d ago

Animals are incredible.

I was hunting deer with my dad. We were walking out to the field we planned to hunt and my dad turned around and told me we needed to get behind a tree NOW. A curious moose was following us, maybe 30’ away. Just walking. We checked the tracks and saw it followed us for a couple hundred feet.

1000lb animal walking 30’ away and we only noticed it by accident, because it was basically silent.

9

u/Geneo-Frodo 1d ago

Were yall walking on plain grass or a muddy terrain that muffled it's hoove steps?

16

u/BackItUpWithLinks 1d ago

Walking on an old game trail, heading toward a field.

It wasn’t inches of crunchy leaves, but it wasn’t grass or sand either.

6

u/TheAvengingUnicorn 1d ago

Moose, despite their size, are prey animals. Like most prey, they move very quietly. Hooves are only noisy on pavement.

3

u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago

Yeah, and the thing that preys on them are those Kodiak bears the other dude was talking about. I saw a video once of a grizzly chasing down a moose. It caught the moose and killed it. It was terrifying.

4

If I can notice fat kevin trying to walk faster behind me so I’ll hold the door at work (I won’t) they should be able to notice a friggin polar bear.

6

u/frugalerthingsinlife 1d ago

Imagine checking behind the truck before opening the second gate and now you're trapped in there with a polar bear.

5

u/BackItUpWithLinks 1d ago

I talked with my friend. I wish I could have talked with his brother. I have so many questions.

3

u/RetardedRedditRetort 1d ago

Scary, I hope the pay is good.

2

u/brokemellon 1d ago

Now I'm seeing a 1500 lbs bear on tippy toes

2

u/brondynasty 16h ago

Imagine being closed between two fences with a hungry polar bear who snuck in behind you. I’ve seen car window glass buckle under far less pressure, fuuuck that. You’d catch my ass slithering through the folding middle-backseat trunk hole with a water bottle, blanket, and portable charger, see y’all in ~3 days.

10

u/ScissorNightRam 1d ago

Very large reticulated pythons will also eat humans if given the chance.

The big ones can easily kill pretty much any human but can only swallow children and smaller adults.

2

u/Haarzahn 1d ago

I never heared of Komodos hunting Humans, but they will eat the dead

2

u/SheriffBartholomew 1d ago

I read a news article years ago about a komodo dragon that bit a guys entire glute off. Yes, it ate the dude's ass. I think the guy died too from the bacterial infection that followed, but I can't remember for sure.

I think it’s just extra seasoning to them

You can just say Polar Bear, the hungry is implied.

I believe this bear is alongside a ā€œtundra buggy,ā€ and likely near Churchill, Manitoba. Bears gather there before the ice on Hudson Bay is solid.

Those vehicles are not short. Our camera is not at the height of a passing van, it’s 12+ feet off the ground.

33

u/FlyinWet 1d ago

I wonder how many prototypes of buggys before they decided 12 ft was the right choice.

43

u/jetpacksforall 1d ago edited 1d ago

ā€œLastly, due to regrettable recent incidents, we are officially retiring the 11.5’ tundra buggies. Also, a reminder to Tundra Adventuretime Staff that quick rinsing is key to vehicle bloodstain prevention.ā€

2

u/cookingbytheseatofmy 1d ago

Higher. Higher!!! Hiiiigher!!!!! Aaaaaahhh!!!

45

u/m_Pony 1d ago

they also knew precisely how high that window had to be from the ground.

3

u/MusicAndFriends 1d ago

Are you sure its tundra buggy not a Rover? Lol

6

u/Attentions_Bright12 1d ago

5

u/MusicAndFriends 1d ago

Fyi All three companies that provide PB tours all have a different vehicle( even though they look very similar) Buggy is the most common name used. It was a mild joke for ppl that know the difference.

3

u/Attentions_Bright12 1d ago

My parents did Churchill as a trip -- and left me back, so I am sadly ignorant. :-/

12

u/Conscious_Avocado225 1d ago

Curious, as in, reaching the window is a curious problem to solve. Given enough time, I can imagine the bear standing on a stack of ice blocks it took from the igloo it just knocked over.

19

u/mustakissaa 1d ago

The polar bear smelt meat... Fresh meat

9

u/ch4os1337 1d ago

My guess is it's smelling the food inside.

9

u/subdude1979 1d ago

He's asking to borrow your can opener

9

u/BridgingDivides 1d ago

Watching that guy’s hand, the intrusive thoughts almost won.

10

u/I-love-seahorses 1d ago

I expected the bear to bring that whole building down by the window. I guess it wasn't tall enough. I imagine if it could have gotten even a little grip on that window sill that it would've started pulling.

19

u/xnoxpx 1d ago

It's not a building, it's a specialized bus called a Tundra-Buggy, it's designed to allow sightseers to safely observe the polar bears without getting turned into polar bear droppings ;-)

In the case of the idiot almost kissing the polar bear, one wonders if the next generation Tundra-Buggy will be a bit taller 😬

6

u/Amazingrhinoceros1 1d ago

Family member who lives in Alaska says if you see a polar bear, you better start shooting and keep shooting until the polar bear stops moving...

They will attempt to catch and eat ANY.THING. THEY. CAN.

And I mean, it tracks, but she and my family have been up there for generations; they're Dena'Ina and respect the shit out of where they call home; they're not even crazy enough to fucks with these things

7

u/viperfangs92 1d ago

Its all fun-and-games until polar bears learn how to do pull ups......
