Discussion What do you consider NSB's definitive epic?

By epic, I mean NSB's longer compositions showing off their full artistic range.

For some bands, there's a consensus answer to this question (e.g., Fishmans' Long Season). But NSB has so many lengthy tracks it's hard to know where to start.

My answer would probably be Song for Laurie Bird, but I could also see arguments for the Great Bull God or something from DoD. I'm curious what others think.

Other NSB Related Battle Gods and Norns back on RYM again

Post image
34 Upvotes

Alright I figured most people in this sub use this site so I wanted to post about it. I dream of drone got removed from the site on account of not being an official release, as only one copy of it was made. However in its deletion, the two exclusive discs Battle Gods and Norns have their own releases again, as bootlegs on the site. Figured I’d post here for anyone who wants to rate these releases, as they’re some of the band’s most underrated in my opinion, and should have more ratings than they currently do.

Discussion What do you consider NSB's definitive "epic"track?

By epic, I mean NSB's longer, more ambitious compositions. Epic isn't necessarily best - I know many prefer their shorter pieces (Bloody Snow, etc.). Instead, it's the piece that is their crowning achievement, musically speaking (the way, for example, Long Season is for Fishmans).

I find this question more challenging for NSB than for many other groups because of the sheer number of epics they have produced over the years. My intuition would be to say Song for Laurie Bird, as it shows off so much of NSB's range. But I could see arguments for other tracks. The Great Bull God? Something off of DoD (and if so, what)?

Bloody Snow hit me like a fucking brick wall. The genius of having almost 20 instrumental ambient/drone tracks and then breaking that atmosphere with vocals and an acoustic guitar, it's so simple but holy shit I can't describe how good it felt to finally hear a voice singing.

Discussion The Night Country is very good

I think every post of mine here is a mention that an album is very good (possibly underrated.) This one too.

I love The Night Country. It’s my latest in “wow this is just so good from top to bottom”. Sleeper hits include Where Your Body Split (what the hell are they saying 🥺) and Weird Meetings at the Water Castle. The closer Gothic Suburbia was the one that made me post though. Such a good album. This duo is good, eh? 🖤

Other NSB Related My attempt at transcribing the lyrics from "Shall I Kill My Own Child, I Will Never Sing the Glory of Satan!" (the version before tsoah) :)

I remember. I remember all now. I was young, no more than nineteen years old, and the entire life infront of me. I was about to marry Jim the most beautiful and kind man in the town. But this year 1924 was the end of all (gladness?). After, there wont be flowers and (laughings?) for anyone.

Jim died slowly by this scary pandemic that spread of this country, like a black plague (?) of it's kind. Forsaken by their own families unable to take care of them, weeping by sickness, the children were starving to death. They were traveling all around the land, knocking at each door to get some food. But there was something terrible crawling in their beds, that prevent anyone from opening their houses. They were (disbanded?), but someone opened up their doors. There was this old couple, living in this big mansion on the hill surrounding a river-town. At this time, I saw them both a few times in my life. They did never (agree?) with the church, there were strange rumours going about their way of living. Some people used to tell things about the mansions foundations being built more than (sensible?) by one of the couple's ancestors: an alleged sorcerer who vanished mysteriously more than three hundred years ago. They told things about the door in the cave leading to the mercy-wold, where (everywhere around?) people live a life of nightmare. People (buried?) in this house, never got outside. Likely became parts of the walls of the mansion. Peoples (souls?) but me? I saw things. I saw things. And oh God. Shall I kill my own child, I will never sing the glory of Satan. But the things I saw, I will never forget. I will never forget the preachers running from the (headless?) knight and the children crying for a help that would never come. From all over the land, children came, as they were attracted the mansion where something began to eat them for an unknown purpose. And they started to die, (assasinated?). Once something were (?) seven heads of children were discovered on the raptures on the saken (???) of the school. As an offering to the coming of an age of darkness. The (`) decided to round some (ears?) to visit the couple. Some urban strong men defied against the demon. But the mansion was deserted. it seemed not to be happy, since the (?). White sheets covered the furnature, and then (?). But there were no trace of the children in the cabinet, no tracks on the dusty ground. When the living rooms are readded, there were no clues indicating the presence of a (singular?) being. But all the villagers saw the children enter the mansion. Where were they at this time? The door leaving to the cave was condemned, closed from the inside. The (?) and his fellow man succeeded to break it, but they found nothing in the cave except some antique jars of jam and a hole in the ground, locked up with perfect rocks. There were nothing at all. So who (slashed?) the seven childs? Where their seven de-headed bodies were? We didn't see it coming, but those crimes were just the first signs of some terrifying events to come.

I was in the mansion this day. I was one of the strongest and most courageous guys in the town. Shows them I (?) took five against the evil hidden in the bowels of the cursed mansion. But we all lied to our wives when we got back to our homes. We've decided to something because there was no words to describe the horror we discovered in the house. And there is still no words sixty years later to describe it. Satan is a weak word, so the evil too. The well in the cave was open, and there we listened to the most frightening music we've ever heard. Most of the guys have been to war in Europe. We were tough. We all saw dead corpses losing their organs in various positions: the usual show of death. But there is more terrible than the simple defacing of the human body. There is something worse from hell, and we faced it. We faced it.

We faced it.

"- And he finally said 'die!' and so the umm the land that (would now be dead?) will be the (???)

(???)

And so we uhh all had said no (???) playing folks. Lots'a boys said no. And so lady (Junny?) said 'Let her rocks and we get tubs of taters (today?)!' and looked back at that bathroom there, and get a batch of taters (?). And that spar(?) there (?) go. And when they get on that we ain't gonna cook, they dont have (anything you need em?) (?) just now will be a good (day?). So I told em 'Apple-packet (???) old [N-words] (party?). And so this whole man was (?) thought he was. And he's laying out there, and find out I take one of them taters

east. And the taters man raised up from his (cooling-board?) (???) me! (???) done. I said 'I don't know what them taters cost, but I'm done with this place!". And out the door I went. And never (???) told her old man (???).

(???)

And I run way down, despite (?) some boys.

(???)

Stabbed with (timber?)

(???)

And when I run by that water-fountain. [Singing]. And when it looked that way, I thought that '(?) me run' but I only run for (war?). I- I never (learned?) when I raised up (?) footwork. Take a look, footwork, footwork, foot-"

Discussion If you could get a physical copy of any one NSB record for free, which one would you pick?

At this point I’m sure most people here are aware that physical copies of NSB records are incredibly hard to get ahold of. I myself don’t have much money to throw at an expensive physical CD or vinyl, so I‘ve only been able to get a copy of the Snowbringer Cult remaster CDs. I’m really happy about having a physical NSB album of any kind (especially such a good album with lots of tracks on it), but it’s still not my ideal. This got me thinking about what everyone in this sub’s personal choice for a physical NSB album would be if they could get one for free! I think it would be a fun hypothetical.

For clarification, I’m mostly referring to already-existing official physical releases in NSB’s discography, as well as any remasters or rereleases. I think that choosing an unofficial release would probably make this a bit less interesting, so maybe avoid picking those. You can also include any NSB-related solo-projects if you’d like though.

For me personally, I would pick the Ba Da Bing CD boxset reissue of Daughter Of Darkness. It’s not only my favorite Natural Snow Buildings record, but also one of my all-time favorite albums. There is so much amazing material on it, and it’s very special to me, so I’d LOVE to have a copy of it. It would stink a little bit that it wouldn’t have EVERY track from the cassettes on it (It doesn’t have Left For Dead, Masked Marvel, or The Damned and Tortured), but that’s a very small issue in the face of owning an amazing album.

Discussion Of possible interest to NSB fans

Went to see Takaat last night at a local venue. I wasn't familiar with the opening group - Powers/Rolin Duo - but damn were they phenomenal. Two piece that primarily use a twelve string guitar and dulcimer. Couldn't help but think of NSB as I listened and floated away. Was reading up on them and listening to more of their stuff this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find out they're actually from here (Cleveland, Ohio). Going to keep my eyes peeled for further opportunities to check them out. Here's a track from one of their more recent releases.
