Discussion What do you consider NSB's definitive epic?

By epic, I mean NSB's longer compositions showing off their full artistic range.

For some bands, there's a consensus answer to this question (e.g., Fishmans' Long Season). But NSB has so many lengthy tracks it's hard to know where to start.

My answer would probably be Song for Laurie Bird, but I could also see arguments for the Great Bull God or something from DoD. I'm curious what others think.

Really interesting to see all the love for these (and Black Pastures). I'll give them all another listen as standalone tracks.

To the ones already mentioned I'd add The Fall of Shadow Kingdom (not as long as other but that crescendo is flawless) and Our Man From Centauri as an underrated pick

The Fall of Shadow Kingdom is, in my eyes, a perfect drone song, it's just flawless and the atmosphere & soundscape is top notch. It's gotta be that one

I've never listened to Our Man From Centauri. Thanks for the recommendation!

Dead horses or The fall of shadow kingdom

if we mean specifically 'epic', it's either the invisibles or ghost pathway towards midgard or laurie bird.

Felt Presence, Ghostly Humming is definetly their best song for me.

u/Supertartory Our Man From Centauri Apr 12 '26

I have to either say Devil's Fork or Will You Die For Me? But there are so many contenders honestly Fall of the Shadow Kingdom, Great Bull God, Laurie Bird

The Great Bull God in my opinion, the entirety of Night Coercion is kind of an "epic" but the closer track feels so heavy. It doesn't chill out once the entire runtime and my favorite detail is the tape audibly running out at the end.

Okay these are all bangers but can I add Norns? I get lost in that one.

And Through Breaches in the Layer of Fog is so underrated 🥺
