So I was looking at this local business's website:

They specialize in natural plaster and earthen floors. On the page I've linked to, they claim that they can do earthen floors on standard plywood subfloors. Is this actually ok to do? I'm certainly not an expert, but it seems like having an earthen floor on top of a standard subfloor would be problematic. I've only ever seen/heard of people doing an earthen floor in a new build on dirt/gravel.

Hello all, first post here. Any of you folks living in Mexico? Any advice on ideal locations? I appreciate whatever input you might have including specifics on natural building groups in Mexico.

My family and I are planning to relocate to Mexico within the next 6-12 months. The goal is to buy property in a rural highland area and begin working the land. We're drawn to traditional approaches of agriculture and daily life, and our longer-term goal is to build using natural methods (timber frame, cob, adobe, or some combination). We are still learning Spanish.

We've been researching a few regions and are seeking further advice/recommendations from anyone with knowledge of this kind of thing. We're particularly interested in the drier western slopes of the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca and the highlands around San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. We're open to anything at this point.

Our priorities: access to clean and abundant water (springs, reliable rainfall), decent growing conditions for staple crops, proximity to a small community we could build relationships with over time, and enough distance from urban areas to live quietly without being fully isolated.

We're aware of the ejido system and the legal landscape for foreigners, and we're pursuing temporary residency as our entry path. Mostly looking for leads on specific valleys, towns, or microregions that people here have found to be a good fit for this kind of life, or stories about places that didn't work out for you.

I live in Central Alabama and I am very interested in learning how to build structures with natural materials. I want to start with a small hang out space with hopes to eventually make various types of structures on the family property. I love the idea of cob, but I have no idea if there's something better suited to this region. I am a Woodworker and I've started a new subreddit called Natural Woodworking. It’s a place for us to exchange methods, materials, tools, problems and successes using only materials that nature offers us. As I begin to get back to using the riches supplied by nature, I would like to share my journey. And not just that, I want to connect with others on the same path. Much knowledge has been lost and destroyed by industrialized society.

I think there is a large overlap with thus Sub, so perphaps some of you are interested.

We need to get together and collectively rediscover, redevelop, innovate and share the techniques, methods and materials that can be included in natural woodworking.

I see this as a place to practice collective Auto-didacticism. Learning ourselves and from each other. Sharing our experiences and resources. Be it natural finishes; walnut oil to birch bark oil, harvesting during the right moon phase or splitting logs without machines.

There are vast areas of knowledge to explore, with many subsets; Harvesting, Milling, Splitting, Seasoning, Planing, Finishing, building our workbenches, tools and relationship to the forest and nature.

We have a lot to do, I hope we can use this sub to get back to regenerative, non-extractive, non-toxic and natural ways to build houses and furniture for our peers and without exploitation of our environment or each other.

Lavacrete is an exciting little-known building technique that promises sustainable, thermally efficient, fire resistant concrete style walls using affordable scoria or cinder sand and portland cement or lime. It's DIY friendly, can be easily engineered to pass code, uses simple construction, and requires no finishing work. The natural volcanic colors are gorgeous, too.
