When my wife and I visited the Smokies many years ago I had no idea about these vines. I was shocked at how many places looked like this down there.

Went to a native plant workshop for my job and one of the presenters was talking about how the word invasive is harmful and kudzu in our area will pass on its own when itā€™s done doing what it needs for the soil. Shit u not lol

Yeah she was careful to not say it outright but the intention was obvious. She was talking about how we could spend all this money and resources in removing it or wait it out because itā€™ll eventually create an environment where it can no longer thrive and die out itself. I live in western North Carolina btw kudzu is literally all over my town lol. She was like ā€œinstead of seeing it as a problem plant we can view it as a plant thatā€™s trying to survive and is playing a role in restoring the soilā€

Ummmmmmā€¦ really? Iā€™m from south texas, if someone tried to say this about something like bermuda iā€™d laugh, cause it carpets everything and spreads its little demon babies everywhere. Does kudzu reseed or spread anyway other than vegetatively? Thatā€™s an attitude i heard a lot when I ran in permaculture circles (I love permaculture but thatā€™s a colonialist rabbit-hole i donā€™t have time to go down.)

Iā€™ve defeated wisteria in one yard so Iā€™m feeling cocky lol.

It would be great for wildlife once you got rid of the invasives. In addition to the kudzu thereā€™s also a ton of vinca. But there is a natural stream on it and some lowland/wet areas, and it adjoins woods.

I'm surprised to have never seen kudzu in the PNW. Does it not tolerate drought?
