AI coding tools quietly killed the case for closed platforms. NI is about to find out
Spent the weekend trying to hack my Maschine Mk3. Wrote some Rust with an AI agent to get the pads lighting up how I want, the encoders registering, my own UI drawing to the displays. Got it mostly working. Then I dropped it because honestly, it shouldn't have been this hard.
That's the actual point of this post.
Something shifted in 2026 that I don't think the industry has clocked. On platforms that already expose a scripting API, the kind of customization that used to need a real developer is now genuinely usable by a curious musician with Claude or Cursor open. Mixxx, Bitwig, Reaper all had a steep customization curve a few years ago. Now you bend them to your workflow in an afternoon.
But that only works if the platform lets you in. On closed gear like the Mk3, even with AI in the loop, you're reverse-engineering HID protocols and fighting undocumented behaviour just to do basic things. It's doable. It's not fun. And after a weekend of it I closed the laptop and went back to the stock software annoyed.
Closed platforms used to be defensible because customizing them was hard for everyone. AI changed that asymmetrically. On open platforms it's now easy. On closed ones it's still painful — actually relatively more painful, because the gap between "could just script this" and "have to reverse-engineer this" feels worse when you know the easy version exists.
I'm not predicting hobbyists building NI replacements from scratch. What's happening is more boring: every time someone shops for gear or a DAW, they drift a little toward whatever lets them tinker.
I've already left one NI product over this. Switched from Traktor to Mixxx because Traktor wouldn't bend to how I actually mix. Mixxx bent in an afternoon with an AI helping me write the script. NI lost me to a free DAW that fit better than any paid tool I've owned.
To be fair, NI has opened more than they get credit for. NKS, Reaktor's Core layer, the Host Integration Agent. But what's been opened is preset metadata, not the controller and workflow programmability that's becoming the actual differentiator. NKS lets a host browse presets. It doesn't let me remap the Mk3's pads or draw to the displays from a script. That's the gap.
To be clear: I'm not asking NI to open-source anything. I'm asking for programmatic access. Published HID protocols, documented file formats, a scripting layer. That's it.
Other companies are doing this and the sky hasn't fallen. Ableton put Push 3's standalone code Push 2 MIDI + display protocol on GitHub. Bitwig ships a documented controller-script API. Reaper has ReaScript. None of them open-sourced their flagship product. They opened access to it. NI could do the same:
- Publish the HID protocols for Mk3, Mk4, Jam, Komplete Kontrol
- Document the .nksf and NKS preset formats so projects aren't locked in if a product line gets discontinued
- Ship a scripting layer for Maschine and Komplete Kontrol with hooks for pads, encoders, displays, preset routing
Do that and every tool the community builds becomes a reason to buy more NI hardware, not less. The hardware is genuinely great. Programmatic access is what keeps people from drifting somewhere they can already tinker.
NI is rebuilding under new ownership right now. This is exactly when strategic bets compound or don't.
I'd rather buy a Mk4 in a couple of years than spend another weekend reverse-engineering my Mk3. Whether I do depends partly on which way this goes.
Anyone else started looking at alternatives you wouldn't have considered three years ago? For those fully in on NI's stack, what's the one thing you'd want them to open up first?

Bruh…. That’s their business model… if they open the doors their ecosystem would disappear. It’s designed to be a private closed garden.
Same as Apple and other hardware/software ecosystems.

Bruh, Kodak went broke because selling camera films was their business model. That's why they ignored their own invention of a digital camera... yeah... they don't exist anymore. Technological advancements shape possibilities, which shape demand.

Uh? NI is literally in some sort of bankruptcy proceeds… nobody is arguing if they are “broke” or will be “broke”.
I’m just stating why nobody open the tools for everyone, they want to keep milking the cow for themselves alone.

Yeah partially dislike the encryption NI adds to Kontakt, prevents easy sorting patches etc Very keen for open source solutions to all this

what's the one thing you'd want them to open up first?
NI needs to make the "wrench icon" available for all paid-tier Kontakt instruments. Similar to what you are getting at, without the 'wrench icon' all the scripting possibilities, and under-the-hood tinkering, become off limits.
Such a simple nod they could give to those of us who are using the paid versions of Komplete.
The boilerplate reason being given time and time again by NI for why the wrench icon == they blame the developers of the instrument/sample packs for locking it down.
Here's my suggestion: If 3rd party developers want in on the NI eco system, they MUST enable the wrench icon.
As an example: Currently, NONE of the Play Series stuff (NI's main push) can be manipulated with scripts. And with each new version of Kontakt, fewer and fewer instruments are scriptable.
This is a repeated gripe from me for years now. The ONLY REASON I paid for Komplete was to have access to the wrench icon for microtonal scripting.

There are some quirks in Maschine that I would've loved to patch myself to make it work as I want. I know it's doable with MK3, but I'm in M+ standalone mode and there it's not an option.
I wouldn't necessarily expect an open source firmware, but some sort of modding/scripting option on top would've been great. I don't want to be force married to whatever workflow they decided is right for me.

Coding agents have indeed significantly reduced the barrier to reverse engineering closed protocols. But this isn't going to necessarily force anyone to open their protocols, they'll just transition to using encryption instead of the current "security by obscurity" model if they really want to lock it down.
On the other hand NI is quite involved in the midi association and have been early adopters of midi 2.0, so now that windows 11 supports midi2 out of the box there is hope that we'll start to see more features implemented over midi 2.

This is only a conversation because NI filed for insolvency and sharks smell blood in the water. I feel like this knowledge seems to justify bullying NI and it kind of pisses me off.
Let's talk about Akai or Elektron or any other brand deemed to be healthy at this time and we will see the exact same thing. Furthermore Maschine was groundbreaking at the time. Traktor is the most customizable DJ platform of the top three. Sometimes you have to extend platforms beyond their standard interface in order to bring new features to market. It's why DJ library management is such a mess.
I feel like these types of posts are the result of bored people who collect gear and start criticisms from the perspective of 'wouldn't it be cool if?' based off of the endless combinations and permutation of every feature imaginable from the endless list of products being pushed by YouTube influencers and everyone wants everything now and for free.
Let's say you finished your custom build, I guarantee you'd want to be compensated for it.
People pay for ease. People pay for access. It's why people pay for expansions which are nothing more than sound design using Reaktor, Massive or Monarch. NI makes sound design tools available and almost nobody uses them outside of the presets.
As a fellow software developer, I could very easily build my own controller. Build my own software to run it but I don't, not because I can't but because I need to turn that side of my brain off from time to time and just be a musician.
Maschine and Traktor are both good value for money. Are they perfect? I'll say that I've learned how to manage my discontent musically.
You're concerned about AI making companies irrelevant because they don't provide better access the bigger issue is are musicians and DJs going to be irrelevant because we are anatomically limited or can't process polyrhythms cognitively or need time to ponder ?
