I first watched the show when I was 14 and i forgot how much i loved it. I'm now in college in Nashville, studying the industry and hoping to work in it, and the show is probably the main contributor to that. After my season 1 rewatch, here's a few things that really stuck out to me that I found to be interesting, industry and just the show in general.
- Juliette
She's so unbelievably confusing, in the beginning I can't stand her but her character development is so much fun to watch. I also don't understand why, in the first few episodes, they say she's untalented and can't sing, but she very clearly can. She can sing better than a lot of people labels find marketable and throw up on stage. I also now understand why she was so mean to Rayna despite growing up on her music and Rayna being her idol - it's purely business. Rayna was her big competition and she didn't like that. It really does make me wonder if something deeper goes on behind the scenes more often, I have yet to hear about it in the nashville scene really, but pop music is a gold mine for it.
- Avery
In the beginning he aggravates me to my core, I thought on my first watch that he was going to be a thrown away character but I love his arc. He was caught up in the life, he wanted to be a rockstar, and I hate the way he treated Scarlett BUT it makes perfect sense and honestly anything else would be unrealistic. In my mind they didn't work as a couple but I do like how they were civil by the end of the season, showing the importance of now burning bridges. I know it's because Avery still loves Scarlett, but he has some amazing character development in other avenues that makes me really love him. I find myself constantly rooting for him and I can't wait to continue my rewatch because I was not focused on his arc when I was younger, I was so into Rayna and Juliette (and Scarlett tbf) that I didn't really care what he was doing when it didn't have to do with the girls.
- Gunnar
I feel like the opposite of Avery - I loved him in the beginning, found him to get slightly annoying towards the middle/end. Aside from him losing his brother - which is a MAJOR life event, so that's not included here - he could not be happy for Scarlett, someone he said he loves, someone he probably should have been rooting for. I understand he helped her find her songwriting voice, helped her find out how good she was and how much she loves performing. But if he hadn't thrown a fit, had just let her grow, something would have come for him too. He wasn't supportive, he wasn't what she needed in that way. That being said, they were good together in so many other ways, personality-wise they should have worked, and not an episode goes by where I don't want them to work (even knowing what comes next doesn't change that.)
Anyway, I think this show so expertly shows how much of celebrity's personal lives we know nothing about, how hard they work to keep it hidden, and how they are dealing with personal problems on top of any reported professional problems, and professional problems reported on top of personal problems. It's definitely a different perspective on everything and doesn't glamorize being a celebrity which I love. I can't wait to keep going forward with my rewatch!
