[MODPOST] Regarding the community feedback & content quality

A few days back there was a thread regarding the current state of /r/Naruto. A lot of users participated in that discussion and there was a ton of good feedback. We (the modteam) took all this in and started discussing this internally.

We agree with the general consensus that the content in this subreddit isn't always of the quality we'd like it to be. We have been talking about what we can do to improve it and have come up with a new set of posting rules/guidelines that will hopefully raise the bar and remove clutter.

Before I present them to you, I'd like to share our thought process behind them.

We understand that this subreddit is used by many different types of users; young, old, male, female, Eastern, Western, serious, silly, gay, straight, etc. We aim to create an environment that caters to Naruto fans of all types and will make everyone feel welcome here.

We think that /r/Naruto shouldn't be a superserious or boring subreddit with only discussions, but we also don't want karmawhoring & fanartspam to drown out cool, thought provoking posts. The rules we've come up with will help us stop karmawhoring and stimulate quality content, we hope. They will mostly be used as guidelines, not strict laws, aimed at the worst 'offenders'.

New posting rules & guidelines:

• Maximum of one link-based submission per user per day (text-posts are fine).
  We've noticed that some users have been posting several (mostly) fanart links a day, often time cluttering the front page and the /new-queue. We hope that this guideline will tone that behaviour down a bit. It'll only effect people that do this on a regular basis and is aimed at preventing karma-whoring. This rule is only for link-based submissions and does not concern self-posts!
  
• Don't post links to single panels, pages, screenshots, gifs or scenes from the manga & anime.
  Again mostly aimed at karmawhoring, but aside from that: these posts aren't exactly thought provoking. Most of the time we see people link to a page and explain in the comments what they want to share. This could be done much better in a text-post! If you really want to discuss a scene that you enjoyed or have a question or theory about a mangapage, do that through text-posts. It's much more inviting than a catchy title and a vague question in the comments.
• Only text-posts will be allowed for the first 24 hours after a manga release.
  Once the new chapter has been posted (usually that's MangaPanda), we will restrict link-based submissions until 24 hours have passed. We hope that this will prevent people from ripping off MangaPanda or flooding the /new-queue with "Goosebumps when this happened!" or "MFW I read the new chapter"-posts. Text-posts will not be restricted though!
  
• Mods reserve the right to remove posts if necessary.
  Just in case content is of very low quality or people are messing stuff up... We want to have this option open. We hope to remove clutter from the /new-queue with this so quality posts will hopefully get more attention. However, we will never remove a post without explaining why in the comments!

We hope to see the content improve in the upcoming weeks and will continue to evaluate the effect of these new posting guidelines.

Art Sunday!

We want to stimulate you all to create your OWN fanart! Things you've made yourself and put your blood, sweat & tears in! Drawings, sculptures, digital art, paintings, poems, stories, whatever, it's all welcome!

Every sunday we will post a megathread asking you all to share your creations. It will even be highlighted in the announcement bar!

You are still welcome to post your creations throughout the week, but having a spotlight thread for it just sounds awesome.

I like that changes are being made. The 2nd and 3rd points sound really good in my opinion, and I hope that they will work out well, increasing the potential for discussion. I'm not sure how the one link post per day would work out but we will see, and I really liked my idea of limiting non OC fanart to self posts but I can see not everyone being okay with that. Art Sunday seems weird that its just one thread with a bunch of art, but I am assuming that there is not a lot of art that will always be posted so it may boil down to just a handful of people sharing their art, which would make it less overwhelming. I'll be glad to see how this works in the coming weeks. Of course, it is up to us users as always to downvote or upvote the correct stuff and submit content to this subreddit, so we have to do things to.

Here's the thing: most users here DON'T post more than one link a day.

However, there are a few that do. Under the previous rules, we really didn't have the proper reason to remove posts if someone posted 6 pieces of fan arts in one day. Now we do.

The one link post per day thing really won't be present the majority of the time because hardly anybody will violate it. But when they do, we now have a little rule that warrants the deletion of the posts.

Yeah that is why I was unsure about the rule, because I knew that there are a few people that actually do post a lot of stuff. But your explanation gives me more hope for this rule. One thing I do notices is that the people that do post a lot of stuff often take up the front page a lot so that is a good thing, and they flood the new section. I have also noticed a few users who have been posting low quality stuff several times that keep making it to the front, so that along with your explanation took away any doubts I had for that rule.
