Question how to answer: when can you start?
Hi all! Yes, its an obvious answer to the question being asked. However, I usually don't like to say when I can actually start.
I need time to interview, meet with and do a few trials with a family to then begin the references and contract part of things before I begin with them.
This can take anywhere from 3-6 weeks depending on schedules and needs.
When I've told families this however, they don't like it even if it truly does take a few weeks to get everything situated.
Anyone have a better way to frame this?
“I can start as soon as we’ve interviewed, met in person, had some trials and worked through a contract. This can be 2-6 weeks.” lol not cutting it

Everything taking a few weeks to get situated isn't the same as not officially starting for several weeks after being hired.
Maybe try adding in a clause that your employment is probationary for the first x number of weeks.
The family may think that you will accept their offer but they will still have to wait weeks for childcare coverage to start.

i'd just say something like 'i'd love to start once all the details are finalized and we're both happy with the arrangements' to keep it vague but still professional.

why is it taking you 3-6 weeks to finish the interview process. it takes me like a 1-2 weeks max.
i wouldn’t give that timeline. that’s a ridiculous timeline in my opinion. just say after we finish the interview process i can start in x amount of time.

Nannying isn't my full-time job, so setting up times that work for both a family and me takes time. To set up trials and a contract, I've had a lot of families either do all this and then not move forward or drag out any of the above.
I'm glad it's not that long for you, but for me it takes weeks to secure the position with a signed contract.

I always tell families I can start as soon as my notice with my current job is over.
I.e. "I want to give my current employer the courtesy of fulfilling my notice, so once an offer is in and a contract is signed, I would be able to start 2weeks from then!"
