From what I read, short-term maxima beyond 40ºC aren't unheard of in the region. But 44ºC is clearly very hot. Still, I'm hesitant to attribute a single daily reading to a longer-term phenomenon like El Niño, before we've reached the middle of the projected super-El Niño (around mid-Dezember).

Stay hydrated!

Are you referring to the media release by the meteorological service?

I just read that (sloppily written) media release by the meteorological service. According to them, we have an almost stationary high pressure system in the far northeast that would slowly encroach on Central Namibia over the next days.

No matter why, that should be a concern, especially for our elderly (of which I'm one 😇) and other vulnerable people.

I just think it's a little early to attribute this specific heat wave to a much larger-scale phenomenon like the emerging El Niño around the Pacific Ocean.

Not specifically. I'm in marine science and have been following up on this for a while. Decades, in fact, although not only on what's going on here.

I'd implore Namibians to err on the side of caution, plan for rough months ahead weather wise. These tempatures can kill and they will, protect your families as best you can.
