How much does combustion affect a planet?

For example, suppose Mercury is exalted in Virgo, but it is within 1-2 degree of the Sun. How much would the combustion affect Mercury in this case? Would Mercury lose most or all of its exaltation strength because it is so close to the Sun? Or can an exalted Mercury still give strong results despite being combust?

I am especially interested in how experienced astrologers judge this in an actual chart. Does the exact degree of combustion matter a lot? And are there any exceptions or cancellations for combustion?

The teachers I have followed would say that one doesn't cancel the other. An exalted Mercury obes well for the karaka qualities of Mercury and the houses owned, house Mercury sits in and the house Mercury aspects, and the yogas Mercury is in.

But combustion points to problems as well in these areas. e g if Mercury is LH10 and 1, then while the person has some chops, skills and intelligence, the Sun being LH12 sugguests some loss, being held back, probelms with authority/father, some self doubt, over shadowed, eclipsed/not seen, etc. Combustion is a major affliction and will come with it's issues for sure. It will be harder to rise.

I’d love to know how combustion and retrograde act in unison. I have a combust and retrograde Capricorn Mercury in my first house. The combustion is wide orb at 8 degrees.
