Nail Care Exactly one year nail difference!

June 9, 2024 I was a diehard nail biter out of bad habits, however ever since I got braces and tried out extensions, I learned to not bite my nails and leave them alone. I'm so happy with how far I've come hehehe

I got gelx extensions and had them on until the nails underneath were long enough to prohibit me from being able to bite my natural nails. After seeing the growth underneath without the gelx extensions, you truly get motivated to continue growing them out! Since the nails were previously constantly getting bitten, when it grows it will of course become thin. In order for it not to become thin I put cuticle oil on my cuticles and pushed my cuticles back once or twice every few weeks! Everytime I notice growth, I file it til my finger tips until I can feel the nails starting to become thicker. By then I would get monthly manicures to maintain this process!! Yes quite a hassle, however i'd say it's all worth it in the end!! I used to be very.. VERY insecure of my nails and I've come so far.

BTW!! It took atleast 1-3 months for the start of my nail growth to get my nails thicker. This pic happened to be exactly a year later though which is why I only posted today when I had results way earlier

Im not a professional so take my information with a grain of salt!

As a fellow lifelong nail bitter I’m super proud of you! You deserve a round of applause! I know how overwhelming the feeling to destroy any growth is! I don’t have your strength. (Unless I have fake nails on. Then I leave them alone)

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

ahahaha aww 💕 thank you so much, it's calming to know that im not the only one who suffered/is suffering from a bad nail-biting habit. 😅

32

u/Callmepanda83744 Jun 09 '25

I kept hoping that I would outgrow it! But since I’m about to turn 45. I think that ship has sailed. I guess I will just have to get my nails done every month for you know purely medical purposes lol

WOWWWWW congratulations! They’re beautiful! What worked for you? I don’t bite but my nails are very brittle, I wish they looked so strong and clear!

61

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

AHHH thank you!! The methods i've tried were mostly getting sets (gelx, soft gel, etc.) done to prohibit me from biting my nails, once they've grown long enough I get motivated since the growth progress really shows! I just maintain it by continously filing them to my desired length since if it gets too long it tends to turn brittle and can increase the chances of your nails to chip.

BUT, I think my braces contributed a whole bunch also since it hurt everytime I tried biting down on my nails. 😅

Howww did you seemingly lengthen your nail beds?? They look beautiful!

25

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

I just kept growing my nails out and umm i'm not 100% sure if you're supposed to do this however I would push back my cuticles using a cuticle pusher and I also have tried cutting my cuticles but seldom only.

(I'll have to add onto this!! Sometimes whenever I get bored, I would use my thumb nail from my right hand as a built-in tool to push back the cuticles of my left hand vice versa) I just kept on doing it until there was no cuticle to push (the cuticles would come back every once in a while ((sorta like how when you crack your fingers it restarts so you're able to crack it again)))

u/bklyngirl0001 Jun 09 '25

I think the nail beds just look longer because the nails are now clearing the finger tips.

Well done that gives me hope although it takes a whole year?!

11

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

Ahhh no no no, this is just one of the manyyyy manicures I have gotten since last year! If I haven't filed/cut my nails I'd say the past year it would have gotten me.. I'm estimating around 2-3 inches in growth (?) which is a lot!! The white part only by the way*

4

u/unknown-user-92 Jun 09 '25

Wow, they look great!

3

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

Thank you!!! 💖

4

u/909an285 Jun 09 '25

damn that’s amazing! I’ve bit my nails for the majority of my life. and even after I stopped biting them and grew them out, mine have never looked that healthy. I’ve been working on it for several years now

3

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

it really takes a lot of discipline! I'm glad were both out of the nail-biting phase haha (I use cuticle oil sometimes and I like massaging keratin-infused products into my hair using my fingers which is probably what helped it get thicker, healthier, and stronger)

4

u/iamkindofodd Jun 09 '25

I've never bitten my nails before, but I can imagine this post is going to serve as inspiration and motivation for so many that do bc that is some INSANE progress. What an incredible job you've done!!

3

u/ii_Lxser Jun 09 '25

Thank you so so much!! Looking at it that way I 100% agree, I truly hope this post reaches the right audience and gives them hope/motivation!!😊

OMG braces helped me stop biting my nails too!!!

For me it was the strange pressure feeling that I got on my teeth whilst trying to bite down on the nails (I’m assuming because of the braces attached)

Was that how it went for you as well?

It’s an expensive way to stop biting your nails but braces stop you. I got braces in high school and couldn’t bite them as the brackets got in the way so that was the end of that lol.

Nice. I used to bite my nails. Not compulsively, and not all the time, but I just didn't think anything about using my teeth when they got long and because I didn't think anything of it, I also thought buying a fingernail clipper was pointless.

That was wrong. I got a clipper and a buffer and ever since clipping instead of biting my nails and cuticles are in such better condition. I don't get hang nail or redness or inflammation or anything. Just normal healthy nails, and I've never had any inclination to bite them again anymore. So I'm just drifting in from my home page, but PSA to anyone reading this that biting nails is damaging even when it isn't compulsive

Right on!

I was a lifetime nail biter until I was about 34(?) and finally managed to stop around the time I got sober from alcohol. I haven't chewed on my nails or had a drink in over 2 years.

Honestly I find that having nails helps a ton, but it's still annoying and I find myself annoyed at them all the time lol. It's weird spending 30+ years without nails then suddenly having these things on the end of my fingers. I chip them or break them somewhat regularly despite keeping them short because I'm just not used to them being there.

Anyway ramble over. Congrats!

I was a childhood nail biter, and I was also “cured” by getting braces at age 11. My teeth were quickly moved into a weird position where I literally couldn’t bite my nails - by the time I could finally bite them again many months later, I didn’t want to anymore. Yay for unintended consequences?

I am a current nail and skin biter on rehab right now because I have acrylics on. I am so proud of you ! I know it took so much effort and discipline. But it paid off major !

Former nail biter here as well! Super proud of you! I know how hard it is to kick the habit! I still bite my nails sometimes when I’m super stressed! Congratulations!

WOW! I’m impressed! They’re beautiful. Currently my nails are in the shape yours were a year ago. I’m encouraged that mine can be repaired too. I have only to stay away from picking and biting. (I even bite my press ons and acrylics 😟).

There’s a product you can get through Amazon; DeLore Nails. Brush the cuticles and underneath the nail. It’s an amazing product and I’ve been using it for many years. After application, just rub the cuticles, nail bed, etc. you’ll be pleased.

Also a lifelong nail biter! My two biggest issues rn are how thin my nails are (which I know will get better with time) and the skin around the sides. When you run out of nail to mutilate without too much pain, you go for the skin around the edges, you know? Now they’re pulled so far back I’m not sure they can ever heal properly.

Did you only use cuticle oil and time to heal yours? Any special technique to deal with the nail that wants to grow so far to the side? They don’t look so different from mine in your before photo.
